Zoe found herself sitting next to an empty seat at one of many tables in a half-empty classroom. She had relocated herself yesterday to this old mansion for college. Originally, she was going to go to one of the local private schools, as her mother didn’t want her to leave for college. But when the letter came in the mail requesting Zoe’s attendance at this college within the elusive vampire enclave, her parents told her to go, to leave them and her younger sister behind because this was the opportunity of a lifetime. The school that had contacted her parents was well-known all around the US because it offered an education unlike any public or typical private school for college students. This school allowed you to trade your life for access to the best teachers. It was well-known that the richest and most famous humans went to these schools. Every once in a while there were rumors that a human student died or was never heard from again. Despite the risk, everyone wanted the opportunity. Only those invited were allowed in.  

Nine other students, besides Zoe, were seated in every other seat. Looking across the room they all looked and sounded like normal kids. They had just been ushered into the classroom without any explanation, but a few of the gossipers had spread that they overheard staff speaking about the humans meeting their vampire partners today. It had to be any moment now. The half-empty room had to be overflowing with nervous energy.
