The Strangers

The Strangers

Jun 08, 2022

Call them the Strangers. Like most solar systems, beyond the worlds favored by the pre-dead and the failed sun worlds, there was an asteroid belt. This is where they came, to build, to wait, to eventually send ships out to new systems. Sooner or later, they would encounter the pre-dead as they had in this system. After the first pre-dead survey ship had left, construction began, pausing only when pre-dead starships were in the system. Giant lasers focused on a suitable asteroid. They cooked it, melted it into a solid lump instead of a pile of rubble. They added reinforcing material, cavities were excavated, and they allowed the former asteroid to cool, to solidify. Weapons, an anti-matter drive, and a controlling computer were incorporated into the once-harmless piece of space debris. Mirror armor coated its entire surface to be covered in turn by a layer of rubble. Finally, indistinguishable from any of hundreds of other space objects, they placed the drone in an orbit that would, once every seven years, bring it near the planet which the pre-dead wanted for their own.

The orbit was not too close to the planet, yet not too far away.

It would not do for the pre-dead to think this harmless floating rock needed to be moved, destroyed lest it hit their planet.

The pre-dead should suspect nothing until far too late.

Even though, unlike the pre-dead, they had all the time in the Universe, they did not want to wait seven years to trigger their trap.

So the Strangers made more, many more drones. One would always be no more than a month or so distant from the target world.

This was an old trick. It had always worked before.

STORY COMPLETE

The Mastery is an alien interstellar civilization under the absolute rule of the immortal Master. Code Zed is a general order to the Mastery’s military to be used if the Mastery is attacked by a space-going civilization. Code Zed has never been used and prioritizes the survival of the Mastery over the survival of any individuals. Colony World 17 is the first joint colony of two species, the Singers and the Makers. Singers look like midget T-Rexes with muscular arms and dexterous fingers. They can remember any sound that they hear and can perfectly reproduce most sounds. They are natural linguists. Singers are most comfortable in a rigid social structure such as the military. They usually mate for life and are only interested in sex when their females go into heat. Makers, on the other hand, are super-genius anarchists who almost never mate for life and are very sexually active. They look like a cross between a human and a monkey, having prehensile tails and fur in a variety of colors instead of green scales. Makers are half the size of Singers and are far weaker. Makers are abysmally bad fighters. They can only slap each other and scream insults. If a fight becomes too disruptive, their Peacemakers (post-fertile females) stop it. Golden Singers have been genegeneered to interact more efficiently with Makers. Makers have refused such modifications. Unknown to the Mastery, the Strangers are hidden in the new solar system, awaiting the right moment to attack.
WARNING: Many of the characters are extremely sympathetic, easy to identify with. This is a story of total war, of attempted genocide. People who you care about deeply are going to die. Violence and bad language are scattered throughout. And violence does not always come from the enemy.
