I was running through the trees of the forest, my heart beating quickly, I was panicked. I did not understand what had just happened to me. In my crazy run, I stumbled. How did I get there? The snow covered the floor of this wilderness where bears, deer and wolves reigned... I turned my head to look behind me to see if my pursuer was still on my heels but I couldn't see him. However I did not stop running, my paws skidded on the smooth surface of the ice that had formed in some places. I continued to dig the distance, scared to be discovered and caught.
My nose was wet and the cold was biting. It was only ten minutes later that my body stopped this infernal and horrible race. After catching my breath, I cautiously approached the river in front of me that crossed the forest of Hagondange. I looked at my reflection with a horrified look, how did I end up looking like that? Flashbacks came in my head, giving me a terrible headache. All I could remember was that I was jogging in the forest at a late hour of the evening. I was running through the trees despite the strange feeling of being watched for several days already.
I did not take this strange feeling as an excuse and I plucked up the courage to go stretch my legs after a really long day of high school. I stopped my daily training in the middle of the trees when I heard a noise in the forest. I stopped running and turned my head towards the origin of this sound. I was carefully watching the stretch of trees until I saw a massive red eyed black animal. I panicked, yes panicked was the right word. I was totally paralyzed, I couldn't take a step and I couldn't say a word as if my brain ordered me not to move.
My brain must surely have thought that not moving at all would make this creature go away. My heart was beating even faster at the sight of the approaching wolf who was walking toward me with confidence and a threatening look. He also had his lips curled up. I had no time to think about what I had to do to get away from that wolf that he had already jumped on me. He bit me with his powerful jaw with sharp teeth in the flesh of my stomach and my neck. I screamed in pain and terror, breathing hard and sweat running down my temples. I wrestled as much as I could under the weight of the black beast. He would not let me go, pushing his fangs deeper into my skin.
I felt something warm run down my check and my back. I did not need to look at it to know that it was blood. My blood. When he smelt the strong taste and smell of the red liquid that was in his mouth and on my body, he stopped pushing his jaw deeper into my flesh. The big wolf had released his grip on me, the pain was throbbing but as soon as he pulled his jaw out of my wounds, I did not wait any longer to escape, the monster on my heals.
I was holding my stomach with one hand and the other was on my neck. My neck was in a better shape than my stomach but the blood was flowing a lot. The fear I was feeling at that moment prevented me to think about it too much. My neck wound was only superficial as if he did not want to kill me, just hurt me. I couldn't see it, the beast was still pursuing me and not giving me a minute of respite. So I hid behind a tree after taking a certain distance. I was feeling like he was letting me get ahead on purpose to have fun. It seemed like a game of cat and mouse.
I thought that he would not find me but apparently I hadn't listened well enough to my teacher Mrs Cannac's biology course on wolves. I was studying the animal behavior this year. I should say that I hadn't listened at all but, in that moment, I must probably be sleeping, lying on a table at school. It will teach me not to pay attention in class and to go to bed way too late during school days. Unfortunately, it would have been better for me to listen to this lesson.
Night had fallen leaving a cloudless sky where the full moon was more beautiful than ever. Under its rays, a pain had crossed me from side to side, snatching another cry that my pursuer noticed right away. Yet, when he arrived at the same spot that I was a few minutes earlier, there was nothing left. I had run away again, more afraid of my appearance than of this wolf. I had no way to explain why I was on all fours with snow white fur all over my body. I also had no way to explain the tail, muzzle and sharp claws.
I was thinking at full speed. Would it be possible that the full moon...? The bite...? The wolf...? No, it was impossible. Totally impossible. Furthermore, wolves had disappeared from this part of France more than a century ago. I shook my head, it was impossible that these legends could be real. Werewolves didn't exist....Right? A noise behind me made me jump, I turned my head but did not see anything. In the distance, I could hear footsteps landing on the ground, the fine hearing of the wolf I currently was had let me know their number without me being aware of it. I looked around to find a place where I would be able to hide myself.
I went to hide under a rock in a small badger's burrow. Only my blue eyes could be seen from outside of my hiding place. I watched the outside and it was at that moment that gray, black and red legs appeared in front of me. I could see their truffles bending over the floor covered with a white coat. I did not see much but I knew that their presence intimidated me at the highest point, especially the presence of the red animal that stood at the center of all the wolves. I could hear voices spread in my head. It was strange and rather unpleasant. It also made my heart beat faster.
"A panicked wolf was here." Said one of the wolves while sniffing the ground.
"He went on our territory and from the panic I'm sure that he had recently changed." Said another wolf.
"This isn't an ordinary wolf. According to its smell, I would say that it's an Omega." Another voice, more hoarse and more powerful than the others said and I could picture the red wolf saying something like that.
My whole body started to shake under the power of his voice and my heart started to beat faster. What was happening to me? What was an Omega?
"An Omega? This is rare..." Muttered the second wolf.
"So, what do we do now?" Asked a shy voice.
"We follow the track to see who organized this change and we try to find this wolf." Ordered the hoarse voice. "Omega wolves that have just changed have a different smell during the first night. If we don't find him today, it will be difficult to find him after. Even I couldn't recognize his Omega status anymore."
On these last words, they followed the path that I had taken when I arrived here. They raised a cloud of white, light snow behind them as they walked away. For a moment, hearing the orders of the wolf, I wanted to leave the place where I was hiding and follow them but something in me stopped me which I was thankful for. After multiple precautions, I began to gently exit the burrow. I couldn't stay here or I would be in trouble if they managed to find me and it was the last thing that I wanted to experience.
I ran back into the forest, desperately searching for a sign I could recognize to find my way back home. I was completely disoriented, smelling smells that I had never breathed and hearing every little crack of this wild and frightening forest. It was scaring me, I couldn't understand what was happening. I was panicked and completely vulnerable to this nature. I finally laid under a tree, closing my eyes to fall asleep. I knew it wasn't something safe to do, especially with these wolves on my heels but I did not really have a choice. I was feeling exhausted.
I was totally disoriented, totally lost. So many questions were running in my head. Why me? What would I become? Who was I now? What should I do? Exhaustion fell on me, plunging me into a deep sleep. The next day, I was in my comfortable bed. My sleep had been rather agitated that night, it was unusual for me. I noticed that because the blankets were on the floor and my pillow was at the other end of the room. Thinking back to my dream, I ran into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror.
No mustache, no muzzle, no pointy ears. Thank god, I was human. What a bad dream! And it was so realistic in addition to that. I immediately went into my shower as I did not want to arrive late once again at my first class of the day. After drying and straightening my hair, I put on a black slim and a sky blue top with matching shoes. I looked at myself in the mirror, my blond hair was down to my shoulders and slightly wavy because of the shower. I put some mascara under my eyes to bring out the blue of my pupils.
I took my school bag and went down to have a quick breakfast. I was in a hurry. Strangely, I was extremely hungry this morning so I swallowed four croissants with a bowl of milk and a glass of orange juice before putting on my jacket. I said hello and goodbye to my mother who had just got up and I left, running to go to school. Once again, I was late which happened to be my daily life for over two years now. I was uncomfortable and I was feeling like someone was watching me. That feeling faded when I arrived in high school. I entered as usual without knocking and only muttering a small 'excuse me' as my teacher scolded me for being late.
I went to sit on my seat without greeting Andy, my sexy neighbor who never talked to me. He never looked at me either and was pretending I wasn't here. He was huge and had beautiful brown curly hair and his eyes were a beautiful deep brown color. His skin was slightly tan. Just the type of guy I loved and that every girls from my school were in love with. I sighed, being right after him in the alphabet wasn't really a change for me as he ignored me. I was bored to death even though I spent my time looking at him. He knew it but thankfully did not care at all. I guessed he was secure enough in his sexuality to not be bothered by a gay guy looking at him.
However, today I didn't know why but I kept my eyes down and did not dare to look at his body as if something was bothering me. And I couldn't figure out what was bothering me. Since I entered the classroom, I felt his gaze on me as well as the ones of his group of friends which consisted of five boys and two girls. They couldn't stop staring at me and it made me very uncomfortable. I couldn't understand why. I had the same haircut and the same kind of clothes, nothing changed since the last time.
"You know, you can look at me eh. I'm not going to eat you." Andy said in a cocky voice.
His voice came to me like a shock and my pupils instinctively turned to him. When our eyes met, I immediately raised my head slightly before catching myself. What was happening to me? Why did I feel the urge to show him my throat? Apparently, I wasn't the only one to be surprised since the same emotion crossed my neighbor's face. He took a neutral expression but a strange glow danced in his chocolate eyes.
"I didn't know that you had blue eyes." He remarked gently.
"I...Thank you..." I began, feeling hesitant and a little embarrassed.
He stiffened a little at my reaction and didn't say a word for a little while. It seemed like he was deep in thoughts. It was strange that he finally spoke to me. Not that I was going to complain anyway. Once the bell rang I got up and hurried out of the classroom, ignoring the fact that he was going to speak to me again. I could feel a strange sensation in his eyes... Was it anger? I think it was. Besides, his band came to meet him and tried to calm him down but I still did not understand why. I hadn't done anything. I also couldn't understand why they kept their eyes down in front of them instead of looking at him.
The following classes weren't the same. I was excited and couldn't stop my legs from going up and down. I was feeling like I had to move them all the time. I was looking at the forest by one of the windows of the room. The sun was shining and the snow was slowly starting to melt which made me want to go running through the woods. My friends did not know what happened to me but they had never seen me in such a state and the looks they exchanged showed me the anxiety they had for me. I usually wasn't like this. I was uncomfortable with the way Andy was looking at me. He was insistent but I couldn't help but wonder what happened to him. He never looked at me before.
I didn't complain about being watched by the young man with brown hair but it worried me more than anything else. Then, no longer able to wait, I got up in the middle of Mrs Cannac's class and I went out, leaving all of my stuffs at the table. And here we were, another lesson on animal behavior missed. I quickly walked outside and ran to the forest despite my teacher's calls. I had to move. I wanted to run. I wanted to let off steam so much that I could not hold myself back so I started pacing the woods back and forth to help me calm down.
This had the effect expected after a few long minutes. I could finally stop and rest to catch my breath. A creak and a warm breeze in my back made me turn my head. It must surely be a lost hiker who came to ask me his way. Yet, my eyes widened when I saw the massive silhouette of my dream standing in front of me. The creature of darkness, black as night with its blood red eyes stood in front of me. The wolf watched me and dominated me with the power he exuded. He did not move. He looked threatening but did not move. It made me feel even more scared.
