Chosen Ones: Sword of Flame

Chapter 1

Varzoth sat on a step of a building's steps, only feet away from the forges cave. After arriving at the town he had a small hope everything would be perfect, no more important’s, no more emperor, nothing. Varzoth was wrong about this, but stayed strong knowing that now that he’d taken this path there was no going back. He’d made sure of that.

“Hey,” came a voice from the forges cave, it was Lilith. His only friend, he’d meet her traveling through Romania. She lived in exile and was a provider of goods, when she met him she decided to stick with him for a little while. “How’s it goin?” she asked.

Varzoth shrugged, “Just wondering.” Varzoth said he wanted a real answer but feared it might not be the one he wanted.

“About?” Lilith looked at him, and smiled. “I know your thinking deep in thought. You make the same stupid face whenever you do, and you’ve been doing it a lot recently.” She blinked twice, maybe to get him to say it.

Varzoth nodded. It was true, Varzoth had never met anyone like Lilith. She was very rebellious, and always at least tried to get her way. “I’m thinking about what we will do next. We got the forge to where it needed to go, so now what?”

Before Lilith could answer Azazel, the last true keeper of the forge came out of the cave. “We use it. The forge is meant to protect, whatever it makes will do just that.” Azazel pointed to Varzoth, “You shall make the next true forge weapon.”

“Wait isn’t that exactly what the important’s wanted with the forge?” asked Lilith.

Azazel nodded, “Yes they did, but they wanted it to clear out all of the unimportants. An unworthy deed for the power of the forge, but if we use it to stop that the forge will provide us with an unstoppable weapon.” Azazel gestured toward Varzoth, “One that the forgekeeper will use to stop this terrible dynasty.” Azazel went back into the cave, Varzoth looked at Lilith. She shrugged, and got up with Varzoth.

She whispered to Varzoth, “Do you still think we can trust this guy?” she asked.

Varzoth wasn’t all too sure about that, he’d claimed to be the last living forgekeeper and gladly gave the role to Varzoth but isn’t that exactly what the important’s did to Varzoth? Was this just another trap? “I don’t know.” Varzoth said finally, “He did give us a home though, without him we wouldn’t have been in the outskirts at all.”

Lilith looked like she was thinking, “True, we need a solid plan. Maybe we make the weapon so only you can use it?”

“Wouldn’t that look greedy?” Varzoth asked.

“Are you always so good?” Asked Lilith, Varzoth nodded to the question.

“Come on now!” Yelled Azazel, “No time to waste!” He entered into the cavern where the forge slept, Varzoth followed. Before Lilith could enter Azazel stopped her, “Sorry, but only the forgekeepers are able to see the makings of the forge. You are not permitted to come in.”

Lilith was short tempered, and if Azazel continued with these comments he would be one old looking sheet of skin. “No, no. She is with me.” Said Varzoth, “Lilith and I go together.”

Azazel nodded, “Yes forgekeeper.” Azazel walked to the forge, probably preparing it.

Lilith smiled, “Thanks.” Varzoth nodded, “So, what are ya gonna make?” Lilith said, smiling much more than usual.

“I don’t know, the forge will guide me.” Varzoth said, sure of himself.

“And if it doesn’t?” asked Lilith.

Varzoth shrugged, “No idea.”

Azazel had given Varzoth many items to choose from, those being metals, blades, and handles. Varzoth slowly went through, choosing what seemed to be the most useful and those that seemed good in combat. He chose a handle big enough for two hands, a strong metal that Azazel called pyromite, and a blade sharp enough for the Emperor to shrivel in fear. Varzoth knew the rest. Varzoth approached the forge, and placed the casing for the blade. He melted the pyromite in seconds, and inserted it into the casing. The handle he chose went over the casing, and stayed there. If the forge wasn’t here it would stay there forever.

“You know after you do this it’s done, and we have no idea what it will come out to become right?” asked Azazel.

“A bit much.” Said Varzoth.

“It’s true,” said Azazel.

Varzoth called upon the forges power, as he’d learned, and tenderals of metal and flame curled around the casing. Magic seemed to emanate from the casing, as the tenderals slowly retreated back into the forge. All that was left was the burnt casing, and a feeling of magic. Varzoth approached the casing, lines of smoke coming from the side.

“What in the world just happened?” asked Lilith.

Varzoth looked at her, “When they made the forge items in the castle, it took ages to make. This took seconds, and it’s more powerful.” Varzoth felt along the sides of it, and felt no heat. He flicked the side, and it cracked a bit. He punched the side, and it split in half. Varzoth reached into the casing and pulled out a longsword, about two feet long, and held it in his hands. It was as light as air.

Azazel pulled the weapon to him, and held it. “An incredible weapon.” The weapon began to move, and flew out of the grasp of Azazel and to Varzoth. It stopped right in front of Varzoth, as if urging him to hold it. “Amazing.”

“Ya.” Said Lilith, sounding impressed.

“It listens to me?” asked Varzoth.

“It appears so.” Said a sad sounding Azazel.

Varzoth held his hand to the still floating blade, and moved his hand. The blade followed his hand, and then it flew to Varzoth’s side. “It’s sentient, like the forge.”

“It is a child of the forge,” Said Azazel, “It follows its creator.”

Varzoth stared down at the blade, now laying in the belt he wore. “So when are we going to try this out?” Varzoth smiled.
