Olivia remembers it like it was today.
Where it all began.
She sat comfortably at his kitchen table, as if it were her own home. Strawberries lay scattered around in a carefully placed basket.
His mom approached and kissed his forehead. Olivia giggled as the boy protested, telling her to go away and stop pestering him.
“What is it with you these days?” Olivia asked, picking up strawberry.
“Don’t know what you mean.” Miller avoided her gaze as he stood up to go turn the music on.
“Is it a girl?” she asked playfully.
“As if I would tell you.” He brushed her question off.
He sat back down beside her and reached out for the strawberries, but Olivia pulled the basket from his reach.
“Let’s make a deal," she said mischievously. "Tell me, and as a bonus, you get the basket! No buts or butts. Tell me already!”
The girl shouldn't have anything to worry about, right?
“Listen closely," he sighed "Or else I will tell my mom to lock the fridge when you come around!”
He gave pause before proceeding.
“Remember the girl you spilled your boba tea on?” he asked her, with a silly face she had never seen.
“Oh! Right. She was pretty...” Olivia grew uneasy, though she did not want to know why. Somehow, she still wished to be aware. She carefully smiled, as to not make this awkward.
“I met her in the convenience store, at the school canteen, and at our favorite coffee place…” he counted on his fingers as if he didn't have enough of them.
“Crazy isn't it?”
“Wow. Crazy.” She forced herself to reply. Placing the now empty strawberry basket back on the table.
“Do you want more?” Miller questioned.
“I don’t want more. I really don't want more. No more, really!” Olivia nervously babbled, her appetite for strawberries had vanished in a second.
“That sounds so wrong," he laughed. "Sounds like... like another thing.” She smiled back seeing the naughty boy she had known since kindergarten.
Now looking back, she knows.
That was the beginning, of their end.
