‘What is that?’ Lain thinks to himself. This is the first time he has seen it, but this doesn’t mean it will be the last.

“Where am I?”

Lain gets up and looks around his surroundings, to confirm where he is, but it’s too dark, so he can’t see anything. He slaps the ground to determine at least what type of environment he’s in.

”It’s rough, rocky and dark here. I think I am in an underground cave, but how the fuck did I get here? Why can’t I remember?”

Trying to remember, Lain starts to panic. He tries to calm himself down, but it’s not working. He doesn’t know how to.

“That thing! Um, what was that thing that appeared in my head? Something about living and dying? Ah shit! I don’t know! I need to think!”

He tries to recall, what was the thing he saw when waking up. Countless tries and failures, stress kept building up. Suddenly a soothing voice comes out of nowhere saying:

”After numerous tries to access the statistics menu, you have been granted administrator permissions. Congratulations... Master. What do you need?”

Shocked, Lain tried to comprehend what is going on. The first thing he said was:

“I want my memories back!”

“Okay!”

Surprised, he didn’t suspect this weird sounding voice to be excited about giving him his memories back. Right now his thoughts started to run back and forth. In his mind Lain has been thinking: ‘What was I like? Was I poor or was I rich?’

That was the only question he really cared about. Everything else was useless to him at this time.

“Master, I’ll prepare recovery mode in a few seconds. It requires you to sleep. It's going to be easier that way.”

“Okay?”

Lain a bit puzzled, laid down and closed his eyes, thinking about what will happen when he gets his memories back. Unexpectedly his vision goes pitch black.

*Sceee-Sceee*

“Entering recovery mode. Welcome Master Lain. This is going to be a little painful. 3...2...1!”

“AHHHHHHHHHHH!”

Lain feeling acute pain in his head, his vision completly black, and his empty thoughts start to fill with memories.

Laying in the bed is a middle aged married man. His name is Lain. It is the year 2056.

During World War III, because of the constant bombings of nuclear missles, the climate has drasticly changed. The world's economy has shutdown, worldwide famine made people kill each other for food, birth rates plummeted down and mortality skyrocketed. It all became common now, but it used to be different. Remembering the time before this all started, Lain got up from his bed and headed to the rooftop of the apartment building he’s in.

“The sunrise will never get old.”

Lain standing on the edge of the roof smiles. He has seen his family members being eaten alive because of the government's bullshit. He has seen his own wife kill herself, because she couldn’t take the pain anymore. He has seen himself kill his kids out of anger, because of his wife’s suicide. A few hours passed by since he buried his kids into the walls of his room. He has been constantly fighting whether he should commit suicide or keep on living an everlasting hell. As you can see he has chosen the easy way out.

“Lora, Reign, Kiara. Forgive me”

Closing his eyes and about to jump, he heard a very nostalgic voice.

“Human, I see you want to end the pain already. I had plans for you, but I guess it could wait.”

Lain quickly opens his eyes to look back, but he’s already too late. Suddenly turning around he didn’t notice himself standing on a very slippery part of the edge of the rooftop.

“Wait!”

Lain yells out. Falling closer to his death; Raising up his right hand. He looks into the vast blue sky, wondering who was the person that has spoken to him.

“It was a good run.”

Like every other person edging ever closer toward death, Lain’s life flashes before his eyes, but a certain someone interrupts.

“Are you really giving up?”

Lain looks too his right to find a man dressed in a businessman suit. Eyes wide open from shock he looks the other way.

“What the hell! Another person jumped with me!?”

Suddenly, the man appeared in front of him out of nowhere.

“What the fuck!”

“Watch your profanity kid. That’s not a good way to talk to your one and only God.”

The man in the business suit said. He then gave Lain the glare of judgment and smiled.

“Also in this world my name is Derek!”

“AHHHHHHHH!”,

Lain wakes up from his sleep in pain. Hardly breathing, a ringing like noise blows up in his ears.

“Master! There is something wrong with the system! You’re in great danger! You can no longer stay here. You need to get out of the cave! NOW!”
