Crimson's Devotion

01

01

Aug 14, 2026

The grand, ornate gates of the Crimson Estate groaned shut behind him, their heavy metallic clang echoing through the profound silence of the sprawling grounds. Jason stepped out of the car, the cool evening air carrying the scent of damp earth and ancient rose bushes.

The manor loomed before him, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture draped in shadows, its countless windows like watchful, unblinking eyes. A chill crawled up his spine despite the warmth of the roaring fire he glimpsed flickering within.

A tall, elegant figure emerged from the deep shadows near the massive oak front door. It was Lorenzo Crimson, his black hair stark against his fair skin, his brown eyes, though gentle, seeming to hold centuries of secrets. He wore a dark velvet smoking jacket, and a soft, melancholic classical melody drifted from within the house, carried on the breeze.

He extended a hand, his long fingers cool and firm as they clasped Jason's hand, drawing him slowly, inexorably, toward the imposing entrance.

"Welcome, my dear boy. Welcome to your new home.

His voice, low and melodic, resonated with a warmth that didn't quite reach his eyes. He gestured inside with a sweeping motion.

"It is a quiet life we lead here, but one of profound beauty, wouldn't you agree, Jason?"

Jason stood still in front of the entrance, sipping from a juice box while waving at Lorenzo.

"Uncle Lorenzo. It's been a long time since I saw you."

Lorenzo's lips curved into a subtle, practiced smile at the sound of the title. He didn't immediately move closer, respecting the distance Jason seemed to favor, though his brown eyes tracked the young man's every movement with quiet intensity.

"Uncle Lorenzo," he repeated softly, as if testing the weight of the words on his tongue. "A title I haven't heard in many years. It suits you."

He stepped aside, opening the heavy oak door wider to reveal the grand entrance hall. Polished marble floors reflected the warm glow of a crystal chandelier, and the air inside smelled faintly of old paper, beeswax, and expensive tea.

A sweeping staircase climbed into the shadows above, and the distant sound of a cello continued its mournful song from somewhere deep within the house.

"Come in, Jason. You must be tired from your journey."

Lorenzo gestured toward the interior, his posture relaxed yet commanding.

"Thank you. It's been an honor."

The young man walked into the house, taking in all the details.

Lorenzo watched Jason walk past him, his gaze lingering on the young man's back for a beat longer than necessary before he followed at a measured pace. The way Jason took in the room—his eyes darting from the molding to the texture of the rugs—spoke of a sharp, observant mind.

"I'm curious. Do you still play the cello?"

"Still?" Lorenzo echoed, his voice carrying a hint of amusement.

"The cello is less a hobby and more a constant companion to me, Jason. It has seen me through many seasons."

He led Jason toward a spacious parlor where a large mahogany cello stood resting on its endpin near a crackling fireplace. The instrument's polished wood caught the firelight, gleaming like dark amber.

"I find that music offers a clarity that conversation often lacks," he said, stopping beside the chair where the cello sat. He didn't reach for it immediately, instead resting his hands loosely at his sides.

"Oh, interesting. I hope you still remember that amazing Swan Lake."

Lorenzo's head tilted slightly at the mention of Swan Lake, a flicker of something—nostalgia, perhaps, or something darker—crossing his features before it smoothed away.

"I remember every note," he said quietly. "It is a piece that understands the beauty of longing."

Jason followed him but paused for a moment because his juice box was empty. He glanced around to see if there was a trash can.

He noticed Jason pause, his eyes scanning the room with that characteristic precision. Lorenzo's gaze followed the young man's line of sight, noting the way he searched for something mundane.

"The bin is just behind the sideboard to your left, Jason," Lorenzo directed, his voice calm and helpful. He didn't move to assist, knowing well the young man's aversion to being handled.

"And do not feel rushed. There is no need to hurry through your first evening here."

He turned back toward the fireplace, the firelight casting long, elegant shadows across his face as he waited, composed and patient.

Jason chuckled at him and then walked over to the trash can. He glanced at him briefly.

"My first evening here. Hmm... May I have an aerosol spray?"

He asked in a polite and courteous manner.

Lorenzo's eyebrows rose just a fraction, a subtle sign of intrigue at the request. Most guests would ask for tea, wine, or perhaps a tour of the grounds.

"An aerosol spray?" he repeated, the words sounding curious rather than confused. "A specific request for a first evening. I admire your directness."

He moved toward a small, dark wood cabinet near the library entrance, his footsteps silent on the rug. He opened it with practiced ease, his fingers tracing the neatly arranged items inside.

"I have several varieties," Lorenzo said, turning back with a small silver tray in hand. On it sat a few different bottles—lavender, cedarwood, and something citrusy.

"I find that scents can anchor a person to a space. Which do you prefer? Or perhaps you have something else in mind?"

"Oh, perfect. Lavender is a type of plant that mosquitoes don't like and has a repellent effect."

Jason slowly took the bottle from Lorenzo's hand, which felt incredibly soft and well-manicured.

Lorenzo's fingers lingered for a fraction of a second longer than necessary as Jason took the bottle, his gaze dropping to where their hands had almost met. He didn't pull away abruptly; instead, he withdrew with a slow, deliberate grace that made the brief contact feel entirely accidental.

"Lavender," he murmured, his voice dropping a register. "Practical and clever. You always did have an affinity for botany, didn't you?"

He leaned back against the cabinet, crossing one leg over the other. His eyes remained fixed on Jason, watching the way the boy handled the bottle with a quiet, focused efficiency.

"Mosquitoes are quite persistent in this part of the countryside," Lorenzo added, his tone conversational, almost casual. "I shall have to make sure the garden staff keeps the grounds clear. I wouldn't want anything to disturb your comfort."

"Don't worry about me, Mr. Lorenzo. I can handle myself."

Lorenzo's expression didn't change, but a muscle in his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

I can handle myself.

The words echoed in his mind, a familiar refrain that had been whispered by Jason's mother years ago, during one of her rare visits.

"Of course," Lorenzo said, his voice smooth and unruffled. "I have no doubt of your capabilities, Jason. You have always been quite capable."

He stood up from the cabinet, smoothing the front of his velvet jacket. The firelight caught the amber in his eyes, making them seem warmer than they truly were.

"However," he continued, stepping toward the center of the room, "independence does not mean you must forgo hospitality. You are a guest in my home, and as your host, it is my responsibility to ensure you are well attended to."

He gestured toward the dining table in the adjacent room, where a single candle had already been lit.

The young man smiled at him and nodded. He stood next to Lorenzo, putting the aerosol spray into his backpack. Then he saw the butler carrying Jason's suitcase.

"Sir, I can carry it myself."

Jason tried to call out to him, asking him to bring it somewhere.

"Where is he now?"

The butler, a tall, silver-haired man named Arthur, paused mid-stride, his expression one of mild surprise. He looked toward Lorenzo for direction before bowing slightly to Jason.

"I am merely following Mr. Crimson's instructions, young master," Arthur replied in a polite, measured tone. "The luggage is to be placed in your quarters immediately."

Lorenzo turned his head slightly toward the boy, his gaze calm.

"Arthur is simply doing his job, Jason. There is no need to fret over your belongings."

He walked toward the doorway of the dining room, his movements fluid and unhurried.

"Your room has been prepared with everything you might need. I took the liberty of ensuring the library was stocked with some botanical texts I thought you might find interesting."

He glanced back over his shoulder, a faint, knowing smile touching his lips.

Jason scratched the back of his neck nervously.

"Haha... Maybe I should follow your lead."

Uncertainty was visible behind his glasses.

Lorenzo's smile widened just a fraction at the nervous scratch of Jason's neck. It was a small tell, a crack in the young man's composed exterior that Lorenzo noted with quiet satisfaction.

"A wise decision," he said, his voice warm. "Let us see to your room first, then we can discuss dinner."

He led the way out of the parlor and up the grand staircase. The manor was quiet, save for the distant ticking of a grandfather clock and the soft padding of Arthur's footsteps behind them.

The hallway upstairs was lined with portraits of ancestors whose names had long since faded from memory, their painted eyes following them as they passed.

Lorenzo stopped before a heavy mahogany door at the end of the corridor. He turned to Jason, gesturing toward it.

"This is yours," he said. "I've ensured it has ample natural light and is perfect for your studies. Additionally, the balcony overlooks the rose garden."

Lorenzo stood in the doorway, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. He watched Jason's rapid assessment of the room with a patient, almost indulgent expression.

"Whoa, this is haunted. But the balcony looks great."

Jason looked at his luggage near the big bed with white sheets, the unique vintage study table, and the unique lamp on the desk. He was silent as he looked around the whole room.

"Haunted?" He chuckled softly, a low, melodic sound. "The manor has its ghosts, certainly, but they are mostly silent. You'll find they are quite well-behaved guests."

He turned his gaze to the desk, noting how Jason's eyes lingered on the vintage lamp and the botanical texts already stacked neatly beside it.

"It's bigger than my apartment room."

The young man's comparison to his apartment made Lorenzo's mouth thin into a private, satisfied line.

"It is a generous space," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying through the doorway as Jason disappeared into the bathroom. "I wanted to ensure you had enough room to breathe and to think."

He stepped further into the room, his eyes scanning the bed linens, checking for any imperfection in the way Arthur had laid them. Everything was in its place.

Jason took the time to spray the room with mosquito repellent to keep the mosquitoes away, even though there were no bugs allowed in the manor.

"This is enough.”

Lorenzo was waiting just outside the door, leaning against the dark wood paneling with his arms

crossed. He had heard the soft psst-psst of the spray from within, and he didn't need to be told

what the boy was doing.

"You've made yourself quite comfortable already," Lorenzo remarked, straightening up as Jason

emerged. His eyes swept over the boy, noting the subtle scent of lavender now clinging to him.

"A prudent precaution."

He gestured toward the staircase, his movements fluid.
