The darkness is all around, a sound echoes in my head, I feel one hand caressing my shoulder gently, another patting lightly on my face, I hear a sweet, soft voice asking me to wake up.
I slowly open my eyes, try to get accustomed to the light on my face, look to the side and see a woman in black dress gazing me softly. Beside her were several jars of unknown content, I tried to sit on the bed, but I was overcome by fatigue.
I looked at the woman for an answer, but there was only a calm expression on her face, her lips painted red once or twice, she was probably thinking of how to explain something to me.
"My name is Rome, and you're staying in the castle where I work," she said, her voice soft and light, with a firm and perfect pronunciation.
I was about to introduce myself, but when my lips opened, nothing came out, it was as if my whole mind went blank and I suddenly could not even remember my name. I began to sweat and tremble, the air began to fail, Rome noticed my discomfort, put her hand gently on my shoulder and offered me a bottle of white liquid, I took it with my shaking hands, I opened and I looked up to face her . Rome gave me an encouraging glance, took the vial to my lips and swallowed every last drink.
My nerves calmed down and my body became lighter, my memory began to come back in pieces, I felt as if a wave of relief invaded me and took the bad sensations away. I remembered that I had not yet answered Rome.
"Everlyn, my name is Everlyn.
"Welcome back, Everlyn. -Roma smiled at me. "When you feel better, take a shower and get dressed, I'll be waiting in room 6.
Rome walked to the table, picked up a silver bell near a drawer, and left it on the shelf next to my bed.
"Touch this bell and someone will come to guide you there, but for now, just think of resting."
I nodded sheepishly, she closed the door carefully. I quickly threw myself back into bed, could not remember how I ended up in that castle, or how I had forgotten so much. I stopped thinking, I was already motivated by curiosity.
I examined the environment around me, the room was large, Victorian-style, the walls were flawless white, and the white furniture had golden details, there were several pictures depicting women and children dancing and making wreaths on a green field and colorful. A door was just to my left, I opened it and I saw a white bathroom with sink and marble vase, the bath more like a swimming pool.
After a long and relaxing bath, I wrapped myself in a towel and left the bathroom, on a chair were a white shirt and pants that seemed to be made of a lightweight fabric. I put on my clothes and slipped on a pair of white slippers. I went to the dresser and picked up the bell, noticed how small it was, and wondered if anyone would hear the sound of it. I touched it and in less than 10 seconds I heard knocks on the door.
I opened the door and there I saw a short girl with long brown hair, green eyes and freckles, she was almost half my height. She looked down and curled into my gaze, I could tell that she was wearing a normal school uniform, the only strange thing about her was the huge scarf covering half of her face.
"Please follow me to Hall 6." She said, looking fearful and hesitant.
The little girl led me to several wooden doors with carved numbers, we stopped in front of the room with a beautiful wood carved in red, she opened the door and timidly signaled for me to enter. The hall actually looked more like an office, with bookshelves full of books, office supplies, and an old printer in the corner. At the table, Rome sat cross-legged, giving me a contented look.
"I see the clothes served." Her smile brightened. "Sit down, please, we have a lot to talk about."
I sat down before her, Roma looked at the younger girl seriously. The girl seemed to understand what this look was saying and hurried to the door.
"Forgive me for not explaining the situation as soon as you've awakened, but we can not afford indiscrimination today, do not you agree with me?"
I kept my silence, just nodded to show that I agreed with her, that seemed to cheer. Quickly she took out a notebook and a pen and seemed to jot down something.
"Do you remember anything that happened before you came to this castle?" She asked, I looked away into a corner of the room, trying to remember anything, a shiver ran down my spine, I looked at my hand and felt my blood starting to freeze. Rome's countenance seemed tense. I watched the blood on my wrists turn black, a terrible fear took over me, everything seemed to get colder suddenly and once again I felt that characteristic breathlessness. Rome held my hands and stared into my eyes, his lips moving as if pronouncing a spell. Tears streamed down my cheeks as Rome uttered words I had never heard in my life.
Finally the sensation began to pass. Rome was breathless and sweaty, he seemed to have worked hard to do whatever it was. I stared at my wrists and shuddered to see that my veins were still black.
- What is it? I ask, astonished to Rome that she wiped the sweat on her forehead with a handkerchief.
"That, my devushka, is a disease. I was afraid it was too late when you arrived, and now I see that I was right. Rome said, looking sadly at his lap.
- What's happening to me? What is this disease? I asked, still staring at my blackened veins. - I will die? Be honest with me.
Rome looked at me with a sad, pitiful look, his eyes telling me more than I would have to hear in words. Tears welled in my eyes and a smile threatened to form on my face, but I held him in fear of looking crazy.
"If I'm going to die, please tell me properly." I do not want to deceive myself with false hopes. I said, straightening my posture. "What will happen to me?"
Rome looked at me, surprised by my calm, but her face softened again. His eyes were focused on his own hands that were gently lodged in his lap.
"I'm sorry, it's not death that's waiting for you." I fear there is a worse fate approaching, not just you, but everyone in this castle. She said, closing her eyes softly.
- All...? What is going on? What is this destiny? I said, getting up nervously.
"You'll understand soon, my dear," she said, now looking at my wrists glistening in purple. I felt my body falter and fell to the side, I felt someone holding me and then putting my body on the carpet, my vision blurred and all I could hear was the voice of Rome.
"I promise I'll tell you what's going on." But by then, you need to get some more sleep-
- Good dreams, my devushka.
