“BEEP!!!BEEP!!!BEEP!!!” The alarm clock rings as if a million speakers are echoing its sound. "Ugh, this fucking alarm, it’s only 6:30 A.M…Geez, five more minutes,” I murmur to myself half asleep as I click snooze and keep sleeping.
“BEEP!!!BEEP!!!” The alarm sounds again, echoing in my head as I drowsily wake up seeking the gratification of five more minutes from the snooze button. I wake up to a surprise.
“What the FUCK! How can it be 7:15 A.M already!" I jump out of the bed like a maniac knowing I'll hear shit from Mom for being late on the first day back to school of my senior year.
As I rush half naked in my room looking for my clothes that I failed to prepare the night before like a ‘good girl’… but let’s be real, was I ever going to even bother doing it? I answer myself laughing, “Hell Nah." I find a pair of jeans, leave the white Tee I had on, and put on my varsity rugby jacket. No need to fix my hair, and I thank God for short hair.
Suddenly, I hear the voice of my mother, “ARIHI!” I HOPE FOR YOUR SAKE YOU LEFT TEN MINUTES AGO!”
I think to myself… shit who was the idiot who created the snooze button because as much as I would like to hate them, I can't because I can't live without it. I try to think of an excuse…. but I’M blank. I face the truth…."NO MOM!... I overslept," I say knowing very well she's going to be pissed.
“REALLY!”I hear back from her as I head downstairs rushing to leave.
“OH LORD! Look at the time…. that’s it! You need to have better responsibilities, you are seventeen already, and I can't be babying you anymore,” she says disappointed.
“Bye mom, I know it…won't happen again I swear…I love you," I rush out avoiding the lecture that is to come if I stay behind listening to her.
Outside, I see my most prized possession. I hop on my motorcycle, the love of my life, a Ducati black with red accents. Mom and Dad finally allowed me to have it last year for leading my team to victory and for this year getting closer to being able to qualify for a sponsor and scholarship .Is a bike that means a lot to me because it was my grandfather’s. I miss him so much, and it hurts to know he is gone. I shrug away the thought trying to not reminiscence about his death and not stir up feelings I have managed to suppress. I hear that engine roar. I must say there is something about riding a motorcycle the simply fades the world away. It is at that moment that it is just you and your machine… There are no cares left in this world for you to worry about. As I rush through the streets of Maui, I enjoy the scenery. The sun…the ocean…the birds…and that wind that rushes with speed making me feel as if I am flying.
“Damn Dude," Tane says.
Tane has been my best friend since I can remember, he is my ride or die. He is about my height, slender has dreads, and some facial hair. A lot of people think we are related, so I like to think he is my brother from another mother.
"I know I know…I overslept dude," I say in annoyance.
“Tell me about it man…we missed breakfast,” he says rolling his eyes.
One thing about Tane is that he has been blessed with the metabolism of a champ because he can eat anything he wants and not gain a single pound, while I just breathe and boom there goes ten pounds added to my body.
“Dude it'll be all right…. besides I gotta follow the plan coach gave me for the incoming rugby season,” I say trying to have him forget about food for a minute.
“Where is Q?” I ask Tane.
Q is our third musketeer. She moved to the island three years ago from North Carolina, and we met her while in lunch. She is shorter than me and Tane, has vibrant red hair with freckles, and blue eyes. The girl is a fashion diva but is the sweetest person you'll ever meet.
“I don’t know…she texted me that she was going to be here soon.”. Tane says looking around trying to find her.
“YOU GUYS!” Q says running towards us.
“Q!” me and Tane say simultaneously.
"OMG…you guys it’s our senior year," says Q as she gives me and Tane a suffocating bear hug.
“We missed you!” me and Tane say struggling from the bear hug we are receiving.
“Me too! California wasn’t as fun without you guys…” she says, finally releasing us.
‘RIIIINNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!RRRRIIIINNNNNGGGGGG!!!!’ sounds the school bell letting everyone know it is time to go to class.
