It started with an email.
“Hey do you want to go on a date sometime?”
“No! I can’t send that,” I thought. "It’s just a tad too forward. He would think I was nuts!"
I started to tap the desk wondering what to say. Maybe I should invite him to get coffee? That's what these college students are doing these days right? I mean I should know, I am one.
“Oops!” My best friend Maggie said as she hit the send button smiling devilishly.
My heart just fell into my ass at that very moment. Do you know that feeling? That hard lump that starts at your chest and then sinks heavy into your bottom? I could not believe it. She sent the email before I could even protest it.
"What would he think!?" I thought.
“Mags!? What the hell!?” I yelled.
I would never have done that to her and if I did she would have killed me.
“What?” she said slyly, “It’s not like you never asked a guy out before.”
“This one is different.” I replied shoving her away from me, “This is not some guy I met at the club that Im never going to speak to again. I go to school with him. He’s in like, all my classes!”
I stared at the computer screen in disbelief. Could I get it back somehow? Maybe? Maybe his computer would crash and delete everything? Only in my f*cking dreams it would!
Maggie just shrugged her shoulder and rolled her eyes at me. “Yeah, okay. Says the girl who hasn’t had a serious relationship in like, I don’t know...Three years!”
“Excuse me!” I snapped, “How was I supposed to know that Jordan was going to turn out to be a complete jerk!”
She laughed a little, “April, I tried to tell you! But, no! You didn’t want to listen to me. I smelled dog a mile away. I mean seriously; the guy wore a tail for god sakes."
I laughed despite myself.
“Yeah, yeah.” I cooed
“I mean, no offense to those who are into that kind of kinky stuff. You like what you like I guess." she shrugged, "My point being, who cares about him when this cutie just emailed you back.” Maggie started walking toward her bedroom, “Hurry up! I want to watch a movie.”
“I will be there in a minute.” I stared at the email. “I just want to send him a response.”
“No! Make the boy sweat a little!” she yelled from the other room.
I could already hear her put in the DVD while she munched on popcorn.
“Hey! Save some of that for me!” I yelled back.
“Then hurry up, you goober.” shoveling more popcorn into her mouth.
I stared at screen for a long time. I was scared of opening the email. My hand was shaking and my heart was pounding as I moved the curser over the closed envelope.
“The worst he could say was no.” I thought. I went for it and clicked on the email, bracing myself for disappointment.
April,
Hey, sure. Where do you want to go?
~Daniel
“Oh my god.” I choked “Mags, he said yes.”
“As if he would say no to my girl?” She yelled back, “Now get in here so I can start the movie, or I’ll start it without you and eat all of this delicious popcorn!”
“Im coming, impatient!”
We’re getting a little a head of ourselves here. Let us go back a few weeks, maybe even a few years. I’ll tell how I got to this point with Daniel.
I’ll be honest when I first met him it wasn't love at first sight...
Wait, that came out wrong. It was more or less I haven't really noticed him yet. This isn't one of those stories where the girl pines for her high school crush and they magically find each other in college. This was a little more out of the blue.
