“Oh, hey love- ah, excuse me; yes I know, this would be quick, sir,” Dave said.
“Sorry,” he began mumbling, “bit busy at the moment. About tonight we can go-”
“Listen, about tonight…”
“Don’t tell me you have to cancel on me again?!” He groaned.
“I need to stay overtime,” I protested.
“Unbelievable.”
“What do you want me to do?” I rested my head back on my brown, leather computer chair.
“Huh. I don’t know,” Dave said bitterly, “tell them you can’t?”
“I can’t just say ‘Hey Boss, I have plans today, sorry,’ you know?”
“You’re not even trying to make time for us.”
“I do try.”
“When I ask you to.”
“Dave,” I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.
“Enough. Let’s just split.”
My mouth twitched.
“You see, instead of getting mad, you don’t even show any emotions, Ali.”
“If that’s what you want,” I rubbed the top of my head.
“Wait-” I ended the call and turned off my phone, slamming it on my desk.
My eyes got irritated, and I rub them hard. Idiot, I say to myself. “Ali, are you okay?” A coworker asked as he passed by. “Ah, yes, I just had something on my eye.” “You look like you were crying,” he replied as he tilted his head. “Hahaha,” I pretended to laugh sarcastically as I push my hands into my pockets. “Hmm,” he groaned, still staring at me. “Go away,” I take my right hand out of my pocket and shoo him. “Okay, okay,” he sighed, “Just. I’m here if you need me.” “Yeah, got it,” I rolled my eyes and looked away.
The rest of the day passed by quicker than what I expected. Even with the break up, I felt… fine? I don’t know. I tried to not even think about it. I only remember when I’m about to turn my phone back on, think about Dave, then decided to leave it off. I need to let him cool down.
But what if he doesn’t?
What if he really means it?
Well. If he really wants to break up, then that’s that. Why make a fuss? Not like I can change his mind.
“Ali?” Janet called out as she saw me stand up from my cubic. “Hey,” I called out as I began stretching, noticing she had purple lilies in her hands, “For the Director?” Janet nodded and walked closer to me. “I’m going to go visit her at the hospital. Again, thank you so much for staying overtime. I was wondering if, if you don’t mind-” Janet trailed off. “Do you want me to go with you?” I asked as I grabbed my leather jacket. “If you don’t mind.” “Of course I don’t mind,” I replied as I put my jacket on, “Besides. I don’t feel like heading home just yet.” Dave has a key to my apartment. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be there, waiting. “Thank you so much!” Janet clutched the lilies to her chest and slightly bowed.
Bey Hospital.
The hospital felt eerie. Not saying that hospitals have a welcoming vibe- no. But this?
The hospital felt hot. And the only sound that echoes down this hall is Janet’s red stilettos click-clacking. The whole place sent a chill down my spine.
“Huh,” Janet pressed the elevator button a few times, “doesn’t work.” “Maybe we can get a nurse to give her the flowers,” I replied and looked around. But. Where are the nurses? I don’t like this at all. I’m pretty sure Janet noticed as well. She keeps turning around and every little sound makes her jump. “She’s on the fifth floor. We can just take the stairs,” she said as she sprinted to the staircase, “Oh. I forgot you’re recovering from your broken-” “I’ll be fine,” I bit my lip and walked towards her and sized up the staircase. “You can stay here, if you want,” she began walking up the staircase. “As if,” I pretended to laugh. Every step with my left leg sent a shock up my spine.
Let’s just hurry up and get the hell out of here.
Every flight of stairs felt hotter and hotter. “Jesus Christ,” I mumbled to myself, and stopped. I then pile the leather jacket down to my feet. Then reached into my pocket and pulled out a ponytail holder. “Aren’t you feeling hot?” I asked Janet, staring at her suede suit, putting my short black hair back in a messy ponytail. “I’m good,” she gulped. “If you say so,” I groaned as I picked up the jacket off the floor. I nodded at Janet, and continued walking.
Everything happened so fast.
Wait-
“What’s going on!” Janet gasps as she opened the staircase’s door.
