It was a seemingly peaceful Saturday morning. Everyone was finally taking a break from school which had been giving us stress and endless headaches. My friends and I were at our usual hangout, a tea shop called 'Bubbles' that was popular among students. Laptops and phones were out on each table. A lively vibe radiated inside.
There was supposed to be nothing particularly interesting about that day. It was supposed to be just a normal Saturday morning with nothing but the hottest gossip in school to stir up our boring lives.
"Quit staring at him Fae," a friend of mine, Katryn said after realizing that I wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying. She was talking about her theory on why the pizza at school tasted like dog crap but I lost focus when I saw a certain someone walk in the shop.
"Mmm," I hummed, distracted.
Mica, who sat next to Katryn, rolled her eyes and sighed. "Don't bother stopping her, Kat. If it's about Cole, then you might as well aim for an A in Physics." The two snickered and then got back to the topic about the pizza at school.
Meanwhile, I was sipping on my drink as my eyes were still trained on that person that just entered the shop, Cole. I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed him when he appeared.
Cole Millers. My long-time crush I had been secretly admiring for years took a seat at their usual table on the far left corner of the shop while ours was on the far right. He was part of the reason why Bubbles became our usual hangout among my friends because he'd come here every so often as well.
We weren't really close. Just two people who knew each other's existence for years because of school but that was it. Nothing more. I doubt he even remembers my name.
He was chatting with his friends when he suddenly caught my stare and for a moment, my mind froze in panic. Then, he smiled at me politely and got back to their conversation.
How funny that that moment only happened in seconds but for me, it felt longer.
"Did you see that?" my giddy self gasped exasperatedly. "Our eyes met!" I whispered to Katryn and Mica, "and he smiled! Smiled!"
"Good for you then?" Mica gave me a pat in the back in pity while I ignored her sarcastic tone.
Katryn sneaked a glance at Cole's table. "Fae, I know that he's your long time crush since you were kids and all, but I really think you shouldn't be that girl that only stares from afar... like what you are literally doing right now." Mica nodded, agreeing with her.
I shrugged and took a sip of my drink. "It's fine this way."
It really was fine that way. I was just the girl who could only stare from afar but I was fine with that. It's what I try to say to myself anyway.
In the end, this is just a small love that'll fade away sooner or later.
Oh, who was I kidding?
I was in love with this guy.
He was the type of person everyone knew and adored. He was kind, reliable and loved. Basically, someone out of my reach.
One moment, I was staring at him like a love-struck teenager. The next, he was dead. And now I'm at his funeral, and I see him standing next to his corpse.
