Chapter 1: Inescapable Fate?
May 18th, 20XX. In the town of Shellville, what initially looked like bright and clear morning skies quickly turned dark and cloudy. Later a heavy downpour ensued drenching everything. The atmosphere gave off a sad and depressing feel, but at a nearby cemetery a boy looked down upon a grave with rage and thirst for vengeance.
Daemon South, 16 years old, 5ft 11’’ with black hair with some of its ends pointing outwards, stared off towards the grave in front of him looking at the words ‘Beloved Mother’ written on the headstone.
Even though it has been 7 years, I still remember it as if it were yesterday…
Daemon thought back 7 years ago, when he saw his mother murdered by a shadowy figure that didn’t look human.
After reporting the murder, the police questioned about it. I told them what I saw, but they didn’t believe how I described the murderer. Some of them took it as not thinking straight after seeing my mom murdered, while a few believed I may have committed the murder under the influence of drugs cause of some drugs and cigs my mom owns to relived her of stress. Can’t blame her for having those when she was a single parent with multiple part time jobs. None of my relative from my mom’s side bothered to take me in after learning of her death. They didn’t even attend her funeral! I heard from my mom that her family gave her the cold shoulder after she got married, but for it to be going for this long and without giving a care about your own family is demonic. Not just my relatives, that’s pretty much how almost everyone around us treated us. So, I put in an orphanage, but everyone still kept their distance from me like the damn plague.
Back to the present.
“Hi mom.” He said looking towards the grave. “Sorry about that grim look. There isn’t a day I’m not reminded of you which has forced me to constantly look that way.”
“As of today, every person I first meet up with as a child in the orphanage have all been adopted. When I first got to the orphanage it was no different from how our others treated us, but I’ve already told you all about that. What I haven’t told you was that when they saw how I was constantly helping the younger kids, their opinions slowly started changing and they would start talking to me. But I see it as that at the time…” Then suddenly he chuckled.
“Sorry. I guess the old saying about not realizing something until it’s gone holds true and it’s kind of sad I couldn’t really become friends with them.”
“Who would have thought you would feel sad by not becoming someone’s friend.”
Daemon, startled by the voice, looked behind him to see who it was.
“James?! Why the hell are you here?!”
James Hudson, a handsome blond hair boy around the same age as Daemon whose 6ft blond hair. He’s also Daemon’s best friend. His only friend.
“I’m surprised to see you’re here too with all this rain.” James took a quick glance at Daemon. “Why’s your hair wet even though you have an umbrella… Wait a minute, don’t tell me you stuck your head out of your umbrella on purpose?
Daemon didn’t respond and looked away from James.
James then busted out in laughter. “HA, HA, HA, HA, you actually did it on purpose HA, HA, HA. Good job being dramatic Mr. Edge Lord.”
“SHUT IT!”
“But I’m hurt to hear you say you have no friends when I’m still around Mr. Edge Lord.”
“THAT’S IT!”
Daemon dropped his umbrella and dashed at James trying to tackle him to the ground, but James casually dodged. Daemon was about to fall on the muddy floor, but James grabbed him by the hood of his hoodie.
“Please try not to cover yourself in mud before we head for school.”
Daemon calmed down and gave a sigh. “All right. Let’s get going.”
As they started walking, Daemon looked back at his mother’s grave.
While I couldn’t become their friend, at least I have a friend, so you don’t have to worry so much mom.
Minutes later the rain started to dissipate as Daemon and James arrived at school. As they walked through the school hallway, Daemon got glaring looks from the other students.
“Even here people look and treat me like some kind of thug or delinquent.” Daemon said.
“Maybe if you stopped making that menacing face all the time they’ll warm up to you better Edge Lord.” James replied.
“One, this is how my face naturally is. Two… STOP CALLING ME THAT!” Jake said as he tried to kick James, but he dodged.
Daemon noticed the other students started acting scared and he quickly regained his composure and continued walking without James.
“Hey wait up”. James said to Daemon as he was catching up to him.
As he reached Daemon he asked “Why did you try to go off like th- “
Aren’t you bothered by the glares you get because you hang out with me?”
“Huh?”
“Someone with your look could get any anyone to fall for you and you’d become instantly pop- “
“I’m not interested in being famous or anything like that. To tell you the truth it’s more annoying and a hassle being some kind of important figure.”
“Important figure?”
“Point is trivial things like their gazes don’t bother me. Besides, someone has to keep your lonely butt company.”
“Sigh. You always find a way insult me even when you’re reassuring my feelings.”
RIIIINNNNNGGGG.
“Well, that’s the bell.” James said. “Let’s get to class before you continue to solidify your reputation as a ‘delinquent’.”
“Yeah yeah.” said Daemon.
After the final bell of the day rang Jake was on his way out, but he was stopped by James.
“Are you heading to the police station or home first?” asked Jake.
“Home just to check on something then head to the station.” Daemon replied.
After Daemon’s mom died, Daemon decided that he’ll become a police officer. Daemon told James he wanted to become an officer to find his mom’s “killer” and bring him to justice, but James feared he just wanted revenge.
As James was walking with Daemon he decided to ask him “I hope you’re not choosing this path for the sake of revenge?”.
Daemon stopped and replied “I’ll be honest, I made the decision as a kid with the intension of getting revenge the supposed killer… but after staying at the orphanage for a while I saw similar cases where their parents were killed, and their killers not being found. I can relate to how they feel; the pain the sadness, loneliness at first, and the strong desire for revenge. Going down such a path will only lead to more suffering, so I decided to become a police officer not for the sake of revenge, but to ensure no one goes down the path I nearly went down.”
James saw Daemon’s eyes and could tell he meant every word.
James made a small smirk and said, “I guess even an Edge Lord can be compassionate.”
“I swear I’m gonna strangle you!” Daemon said in a pissed tone.
Soon after they went their separate ways.
