Empress Raine sat within her reading room, her sharp silver eyes pointed down at the soft green-covered book that laid in between her slender hands. Gently she turned the page, her attention picking up where the last page had left off.
Although she was reading, she wasn’t grasping any of the concepts of dark sorcery the book explained. Her mind was wandering about the many things she needed to get done. There were relations that needed to be signed off from the neighboring Pirenth Kingdom but she needed to be careful.
Although the Pirenth Kingdom is rich in silver and gold, and their ruler King Saerus, is a paranoid man. He didnt trust the Empress for he knew of her trail of bloodshed and how she conquered three Kingdoms in her reign; Iraenao, Eranad, and Horin.
If she spooked him, she knew the trade agreement would be off. Although she could simply overrun the Pirenth Kingdom but using such violence and hostility in this day and age was unnecessary. The Disdarious Empire was one of the largest in all of Xeayirah and she led the siege over all of them. But as of right now, she needed to stay within the palace.
A knock came to the door and without lifting her head she responded with a cold tone, “Come in.”
The tall oak door creaked open and in piled her three children with faces full of gleam and wonder. In the last ten years, she has given birth to Princess Lana; a girl whose personality resembled her own, cold yet had the attitude of her late father, fiery. She wore her sunset orange hair in two pigtails that were decorated in small white daisies and a simple chiffon burgundy dress.
Prince Zaynelius was the middle child. He was severely hard-headed and argued with his older sister but was bound to be stronger than Empress Raine. He caught on to the Chaos Sorcery that ran through their blood quicker and would sometimes use the Twilight Ritual to summon beasts within the palace walls. He wore a white tunic with a black ribbon and matching leggings with a small dark crown that laid gently on his unruly white hair.
Her last child, Prince Vanitas was an extrovert who loved to talk to anyone who would lend him an ear but enjoyed violence and bloodshed a little too much. He would ask the Empress to explain in great detail how she ripped off heads and stabbed through the bodies with her greatsword Libisic. She was proud that he took interest in death and magic. His clothing was just like his older brothers except his black hair was neatly brushed back and he wore no crown.
“What do you three want?” Her eyes lifted from the page and to her bright-eyed kids that stood in a line.
“Well…we were wondering…” Prince Zaynelius twisted his hands together, “If we would hold any masquerades soon.”
Her sleek white eyebrow lifted as she closed the book and laid it in her lap, “What is the meaning behind such a question? You all are young to be inquiring about such political depths of our empire.”
“We just learned how cool it was from Headmistress Llia.” Princess Lana folded her arms, “And how big of a role you play in it especially since you’re the Empress.”
“Do people really get stabbed on the dance floor?!” Vanitas squeaked, his brown eyes sparkling with the thought of people dancing amongst the bloody marble floor, “And with what kind of knife? Poisoned? Acid? Magically inspired?”
“Headmistress Llia didnt explain much except for the fact you stabbed your sister in the heart when you were just fourteen in front of the royal court!” Princess Lana sneered.
“Yeah what was that about? She said it was the most talked-about event that ever happened besides the death of Lord Harper.” Prince Zaynelius chimed in.
Empress Raine stood up suddenly, silencing the children. With icy eyes, she glanced down at them and pierced her lips together before opening her mouth, “I do not believe these topics are appropriate for children.”
She took one step forward and they instantly moved out of her way, their eyes looking down at the floor. Her long white hair flowed as she took several more steps forward, dragging her long sheer black dress on the floor behind her as she headed for the door, “However I do forget that you are my children. You are powerful, strong, and destruction courses through your veins.”
She stopped at the door, “Depending on the future state of affairs with the Pinrenth Kingdom and several others, a masquerade might be required.”
Several soft “yes!” came from the children.
A soft smile formed on her hardened face, “Come along children. Allow me to truly teach you about the ways of the masquerade ball.
