Dreaming of Korea

Chapter 1: The Delinquent Youth

Chapter 1: The Delinquent Youth

Jan 21, 2026

Kent Foreign Language School in South Korea was founded in 1993. Although relatively young, its infrastructure is excellent, and it boasts a large number of foreign teachers.

The student body is predominantly composed of foreign students, with 70% being international students and the remaining 30% being Korean expatriates who have resided overseas for more than five years.

Xiahou Zhongying's father, Xiahou Shang, is a high-ranking executive at a state-owned enterprise in China, stationed in Seoul, South Korea, as the branch manager. His mother died in a car accident when he was seven. Whether due to deep love for his mother or a belief that a stepmother would negatively impact Xiahou Zhongying's upbringing, his father has never remarried, and the family has always consisted of just the two of them.

Because Xiahou Shang was going to work in South Korea, he was worried about leaving Xiahou Zhongying alone in China, fearing he might go astray. After some forceful negotiation, he decided to bring him to South Korea. Once there, through connections, he enrolled Xiahou Zhongying at Kent Foreign Language School, where he is currently in Grade 11, Class 5.

Just a few days after arriving in South Korea, Xiahou Zhongying regretted his decision.

The language barrier wasn't too difficult. Although his Korean wasn't great, allowing only for basic understanding and simple conversations, English was the second language at Kent. Having lived in the US with his father for three years, this posed no obstacle for Xiahou Zhongying, who could use it fluently.

What Xiahou Zhongying couldn't stand was South Korea's strict etiquette and its rigid seniority system.

The US and China are relatively free countries with fewer complicated etiquette rules, unlike South Korea, where strict etiquette exists across all social classes. Accustomed to freedom, suddenly having to live according to South Korean etiquette nearly drove Xiahou Zhongying to a breakdown.

Because he was unfamiliar with South Korean etiquette, or perhaps harbored a deep-seated resistance to it, Xiahou Zhongying made numerous mistakes within just a few days of arriving at Kent. He not only fought with older students and skipped classes but also resisted corporal punishment from teachers. Within a week, he had received two major demerits, becoming a delinquent in the eyes of his teachers.

Fortunately, Kent was an international school, with most of its students being foreign nationals. The school's etiquette requirements were relatively more lenient than other Korean schools; otherwise, given Xiahou Zhongying's mistake, he would have been expelled long ago.

That day, Xiahou Zhongying was slumped over his desk, head resting on his arm, eyes unfocused as he rapidly spun a pen in his right hand. He was contemplating whether to ask his father to let him return to China to study after going home; he'd had enough of what had happened these past few days.

Suddenly, a premonition struck him. He felt something flying rapidly towards him. Having practiced martial arts since childhood, he instinctively grabbed the end of the spinning pen and thrust it forward.

Feeling a slight tremor in his hand, he saw the pen tip pierce something. The object flew back towards where it had come from, followed by a scream of pain.

The scream jolted Xiahou Zhongying from his reverie, making his heart skip a beat. He realized, "Oh no, I've made another mistake."

Sure enough, Xiahou Zhongying looked up and saw first the round-faced girl sitting in front of him glaring at him, then the teacher on the podium, his face ashen, also glaring at him.

The teacher raised his hand, pointed at Xiahou Zhongying, and before he could speak, Xiahou Zhongying stood up dejectedly and said, "I understand, teacher, the usual."

He bowed to the teacher, turned, picked up his chair, and walked towards the classroom door.

From his very first day at school, Xiahou Zhongying was punished by being late and made to stand in the corridor.

The next day, he beat up several older students who were causing trouble, sending them to the hospital. Not only did he have to pay for their medical expenses, but he also received two major demerits for resisting the headmaster's punishment of kneeling. The headmaster, angered, made him hold a chair above his head with both hands during punishment, indirectly increasing the difficulty until he agreed to kneel.

On the third day, he didn't escape punishment either, being punished by the headmaster for a minor offense and made to stand in the corridor. Xiahou Zhongying, in a fit of rage, skipped class.

As expected, he was punished on the fourth day.

Today was his fifth day at school, and he was caught red-handed again.

It could be said that Xiahou Zhongying was the most frequently punished student in Kent's history; five days in a row, not a single day had he escaped the tragic fate of being punished.

The students in the classroom couldn't help but chuckle, silently marveling at Xiahou Zhongying's incredible bad luck.

"A hopeless case," the teacher on the platform cursed angrily, glaring at Xiahou Zhongying's retreating figure. Turning to the other students, he yelled, "What are you laughing at? Continue the lesson!"

Xiahou Zhongying, carrying a chair in his right hand, walked dejectedly towards the door. Just as he stepped out, he suddenly noticed a dark figure rushing towards him. Instinctively, he quickly grabbed the chair to shield himself from the figure, but before he could do anything else, the figure knocked him to the side.

"Ah!" Two screams rang out simultaneously. To make matters worse, Xiahou Zhongying's head slammed heavily against the floor, followed by another head colliding with his own. The double impact made his vision blur and his head spin.

The chair pressed down on his thighs, and with someone else on top of him, the pain made him dizzy, as if his legs were about to break.

These past few days of bad luck had been simmering in Xiahou Zhongying's anger, and now, with this latest misfortune, he couldn't hold back any longer and his anger finally erupted.

After lying on the ground for several seconds, Xiahou Zhongying finally caught his breath. Then, naturally, he started cursing in Mandarin: "Damn it, why are you running around? Are you going to a funeral?"

After cursing, Xiahou Zhongying finally had time to look at the person still clinging to him. Upon seeing who it was, Xiahou Zhongying paused slightly, slightly stunned. It was a very beautiful girl, her mouth agape, gasping for breath, tears welling in her eyes, seemingly trying to cry but unable to make a sound.

Seeing the girl's appearance, Xiahou Zhongying couldn't bring himself to continue cursing. It wasn't because she was pretty, but because her pain seemed no less than his own, making him feel somewhat embarrassed. Besides, she was a girl; arguing with a girl seemed pathetic, according to his unscrupulous father.

"You bastard..." Xiahou Zhongying couldn't curse, but that didn't mean the girl couldn't. And when she did, her scream was as fierce as a Tyrannosaurus Rex's roar from Jurassic Park. Because their heads were almost touching, the 180-degree soprano scream made Xiahou Zhongying's ears ring, as if his eardrums were about to rupture.

"Waaah... my foot... it hurts so much..."

While Xiahou Zhongying was still dazed, the girl finally managed to cry out.

Jung Soo-yeon was a trainee at S.M. Entertainment, South Korea's largest, most powerful, and most influential entertainment company. In South Korea, the competition to debut as an artist is fierce. Even at S.M. Entertainment, known as a "star-making factory," many trainees succumb to the pressure or fail to meet the requirements and leave each year.

Although Jessica Jung is one of the best trainees at S.M., it doesn't guarantee her debut. To fulfill her dream of becoming a star, she often skips classes to practice at the company, honing her basic skills.

Recently, because the company has a crucial exam at the end of the month, Jessica Jung hasn't attended school for a week, practicing every day at the company to achieve good results.

Today, to relax, Jessica Jung finally went to school, but was late and rushed to the classroom. Unexpectedly, she bumped into Xiahou Zhongying, who was just stepping out of the classroom.

The collision wasn't a big deal; at most, she tripped and fell, feeling a slight pain. The crucial point was that the bastard was carrying a chair. First, he stabbed her with the chair, and then, when she fell, her leg landed on the chair's metal leg, causing her so much pain she couldn't even cry out.

Feeling her leg was too painful to move, and then thinking about the big exam she had been preparing for for so long, which was only two days away, how could she possibly take the exam with her leg in this state? The more Jessica Jung thought about it, the more heartbroken she became, and the more intense her hatred grew towards the culprit beneath her.

"Hey, get up first, okay?" Before Jessica Jung could figure out how to get revenge on Xiahou Zhongying, she heard him speak first.

Xiahou Zhongying spoke in English, which Jessica Jung, who had grown up in America, naturally understood. Seeing Xiahou Zhongying's furrowed brows and wretched expression after speaking, Zheng Xiuyan, whether bewitched or not, didn't consider the consequences. Controlled by rage, she moved her hands, which were supporting Xiahou Zhongying's chest, upwards and grabbed his neck, roaring angrily, "I'm going to kill you!"

Xiahou Zhongying, feeling suffocated by the chokehold, quickly grabbed one of Zheng Xiuyan's hands with each of his own and tried to pry them apart.

Men are generally stronger than women, and Xiahou Zhongying, having practiced martial arts since childhood, had an added advantage. Zheng Xiuyan was naturally no match for him.

After freeing herself, Xiahou Zhongying breathed a sigh of relief and was enjoying his breathing when he realized that with both of Zheng Xiuyan's hands gripped, her body, without support, was pulled down by gravity and crashed into him. Their heads collided again with a "bang," and to make matters worse, they hit the same spot where they had just bumped into each other. The pain brought tears to Xiahou Zhongying's eyes; he was incredibly unlucky.

"You brat, are you trying to kill me?" Xiahou Zhongying hissed, his anger burning. Zheng Xiuyan's expression just now looked like she wanted to kill him; even the most mild-mannered person would lose their temper. After cursing, he used a slight force to flip Zheng Xiuyan, who was still clinging to him with her head still touching his, to the side. With someone choking him, he had no intention of showing mercy to the culprit, even if she was a pretty girl.

"I'm going to kill you, waah..." Zheng Xiuyan cried, pounding her fist on his chest with the hand Xiahou Zhongying had just released.

"Damn it, here we go again!" Having just been hit once, Xiahou Zhongying grabbed Zheng Xiuyan's hand as she swung it again, glaring at her and saying, "Are you ever going to stop?"

The commotion they were making had already alerted everyone in the classroom, and even those in the next classroom.

The teacher ran out first, but was stunned by Zheng Xiuyan's choking gesture. It wasn't until now that she reacted that she rushed over, yelling, "What are you doing? Stop it!"

The students in the classroom also erupted in a commotion, following the teacher as they ran out in a chaotic rush.

"Get up right now! What kind of behavior is this?" the teacher yelled, her face ashen as she glared at the two.

Xiahou Zhongying sighed, her face contorted with pain as she scrambled to her feet. The moment her right foot, which had been pinned down by the chair, touched the ground, a piercing pain shot through her thigh, almost causing her to lose her balance. She quickly grabbed the classroom wall for support, afraid to let her right foot touch the ground again.

Jessica Jung sat up but wouldn't move, crying to the teacher, "I can't move my leg."

The teacher was terrified. Forgetting all pretense of professional decorum, she quickly gestured to two girls surrounding her, saying, "You, you, you two come here and help Jessica Jung to the hospital, quick!"

The teacher had just breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Xiahou Zhongying standing with one leg on the ground and the other bent and raised in the air, one hand on the wall, the other raised, looking at her with a pitiful expression. She couldn't help but get angry, "What are you doing now?"

"Teacher, I need to go to the hospital too," Xiahou Zhongying said, her face contorted with grief.
