"Mary, wake up."
was the first thing I heard when I woke up this morning. As I opened my eyes, all I could see were blurry colors. Lots of light beige and a touch of blue, most likely coming from the large window behind my headboard.
I opened my eyes to reveal my little sister staring with her deep blue eyes. "Mary, wake up!"
She pushed me off my own bed and I landed straight on the hardwood floor, which in itself was impressive. Being only six years old and can already push me off the side of my king-sized bed. Her future calling must be that of a hard worker.
"Lina, don't go pushing me off my bed like that, it hurts," I say as I rub my bottom side.
"Mary has to go to her new school, and I'm ready to become the only child!"
"L-lina! What are you talking about?!" I shout in utter disbelief.
She crossed her arms. "When Mary goes to her new school, which is a boarding school, I will become the only child, and I'll get to marry a strong and handsome noble boy."
"Lina, you're so funny." I begin to giggle.
She points her tiny finger at my face. "Shut up! Knights can't marry once they've become registered ones! That's precisely why I will not become one."
"You've been using big words lately, what has Arwin been teaching you?"
As I finish my sentence I hear a light knock on my bedroom door. From across the long room, I yell "Please come in!"
The tall and arched twin doors open with the slightest squeak. I see a tall young man, dressed properly in his formal attire, Arwin.
"Now mistress Rosemerry, I have not taught young mistress Rosalina anything strange, she just has an affinity to look at our dictionary."
"Come on now Arwin, I've addressed many times that you may refer to me as Mary."
"Yes you have, but the code of conduct does not allow it. It is my calling properly to serve your family and properly serve I will." He bowed.
"Well I suppose it doesn't matter anymore as Lina says, I will be leaving today."
I look out the large window that is easily eight times my size. I see the massive courtyard of Rosewell Manor. The fountains, hedges, and rose bushes are very stunning. I felt a strange sense of nostalgia. I could see myself as a little girl running and playing in that courtyard with my childhood friend, Eugenio.
Eugenio was a charming young boy, he knew how to flirt with the other girls. Yet with me, he treated me as if I were one of his guy friends. I wonder if that says anything about me.
In the center, lays a large marble statue of a man clad in armor. That man is my great grandfather, Otto Van Rosewell. He was known as the "Knight of The Roses." He was a general in the Second Freedom War from the crushing grip of the Valhallan Empire. He was said to have been a hero, and a hero I will be, just like him.
I stood up from the floor in which I injured myself and stretched. The final stretch I would have in this very bedroom.
"Mistress, it pains me to see you go." Arwin politely mentioned.
"Arwin, it pains me to go too. But this is my calling, and it was approved by the King himself. I must go, to become a knight."
Arwin took out a handkerchief from his jacket pocket and wiped his right eye. "Mistress, I will miss you very much."
I turned to Arwin and gave him a smile, "Don't worry about me. When I become a registered knight, I'll return and show you the skills I'd gained."
He wiped his eye a second time, "I trust you will use the techniques I taught you?"
"Yes, the Arwinian Sword Style will live on."
"Bless you and your trip." He said.
I nodded.
"Ew, you're both getting so sappy," Lina said with an annoyed tone.
Arwin and I laughed, the last laugh I will have in this very room.
