"Mamma, can you tell me the story of the heroes again!" a young girl exclaims in excitement.
She eagerly climbs into the comfortable bed with her stuffed animal.
The girl's mom gently grabs the books from the shelf, " Dear, I've probably read this book more than 10 times to you."
As she settles down beside her daughter, the mom notices the girl's eyes light up with excitement as she eagerly flips through the pages of the old, weathered book. It's a book that would normally give most children nightmares, but not her daughter. The mom can't help but feel a twinge of surprise, mixed with pride, at her daughter's unexpected interest in this book.
The girl giggles in excitement, "I don't care! I love the story!"
The mother begins the story.
Once upon a time, our world was just like yours, with an advanced civilization driven by technological and industrial advancement. However, our small and insignificant species was threatened by the rise of demons from the cracks of the universe. But four brave heroes emerged from the ashes of despair and shattered the demon kings' hold on our world.
One by one, the forces of evil fell, and with that came a gift that would change our world forever: Mana. The mana that seeped from the demons took root deep within our world and evolved everything it touched. Once ordinary humans were now able to wield the same power as the demons, and thus define their destiny in this world.
The four great heroes claimed the mana cores of the demon kings and became the four kingdoms we know today. These kingdoms are Agnus Aelius of the Aelius kingdom, Salinda Oberon of the Oberon kingdom, Dysis Evenfall of the Evenfall kingdom, and finally Oriana Eos of the Eos kingdom.
5000 years have passed since the war, and the kingdoms still stand strong to this day. Each kingdom has its role in this world and serves its purpose. However, fragments of the past still torment the future, and lingering demons still roam this world. If the heroes remain, the demons will not prevail.
With their newfound power, the kingdoms strive to vanquish all demon traces of this world and bring peace to all.
A guard lets out a weary sigh as he stands watch near a quiet courtyard. The vast expanse of the starry night sky looms above, casting a shimmering glow over the kingdom of Aelius below, where its inhabitants lay sleeping peacefully.
"Man, why did I have to get put up with night patrol."
In the corner of his eye, he spots two drunken men stumble their way out of a bar that seems to be closing for the night. He yells out, " You two alright over there! Be careful at night there is still demon activity in this area!"
"Don't concern yourself officer...hic...were fine!" the man says.
"Yeah! No demon will ... hic... touch us! We'll fuck him up!"
"Absolute idiots." the guard thinks to himself as he turns away from the men who are making a turn down an alleyway.
The guard was caught off guard by a sudden noise that came from the direction of the two men. He quickly turned his head, trying to locate the source of the sound. A sense of tension and unease began to creep in as he heard the drunken men's horrific screams for help. His expression turned grave, and he immediately began running towards the alleyway, his spear held tightly in his hand and his eyes scanning for any signs of danger. As he approached the scene, the guard remained alert and ready for battle, his heart pounding in his chest.
"AHHH! DEMON" the two men yell in agonizing fear.
A mysterious figure shrouded in a dark cloak dominates one of the men, pinning him to the ground with an iron grip. The other man trembles in fear, desperately clinging to the wall as if it could swallow him whole. His eyes are wide with terror, tears streaming down his face as he witnesses the scene unfolding before him. Despite the chaos, both men appear to be unharmed for the moment. Suddenly, the cloaked figure turns its head, revealing piercing blue eyes that lock onto the guard. The guard is frozen in place, stunned and helpless like a deer caught in the glare of bright lights.
Swiftly, the figure makes a dash to escape before the guard can compose himself. He calls for backup and two other guards appear before his side in a flash. The group of guards chase down the demon.
The figure jumps over various obstacles and shoves them in the path to block the guards from reaching it.
"Guards, formation 1!"
One guard stops behind the others and punches the floor underneath him. The ground starts to crack and shift underneath the figure which causes it to lose balance and stumble.
The other guard uses a wand to control a gust of wind which shoves the figure against a wall, completely immobilizing it temporarily.
The first guard throws his spear imbued with flames which pierces the air leaving a trail of hot gusts behind it and heading straight for the figure at lightning speeds.
It reacts quickly shoving itself off the wall and tumbling backwards, narrowly missing the flamed spear. The figure takes out daggers from its pockets and throws them at the guards.
One of the guards creates a wall made of earth in front of them in an act to protect the group. As soon as the daggers contact the wall it bursts into clouds of smoke completely engulfing the group of guards.
The guard disperses the wall and coughs from the smoke. In the same breath, the second guard clears the smoke with his wand. However, the figure has already disappeared from their sights. The lead guard summons its spear back and it is drawn to his hand as if tranced or cursed.
"Ugh, keep looking for that thing! Call for more backup to take care of the civilians!"
They run down the alleyway in a frantic search of the figure but to no success.
"Well, that was a close call wasn't it" the cloaked figure sighs in relief still holding the gold it stole from those drunken men. A drop of sweat glides down the figure's face as it tries to catch its breath once more.
That could have ended worse if it had not reacted as fast as it did.
It managed to find a hiding spot in the attic in one of the houses that had an open window, truly a lucky outcome.
The figure takes off its hood and sees a mirror in front of it.
As the demon stared at her reflection, her piercing blue eyes locked onto her own. She noticed how her long, flowing brunette hair cascaded down to her shoulders, framing her face perfectly. A single white strand of hair was tucked behind her ear, adding a stark contrast to the rest of her dark locks. In the moonlight, her tiny, dark twilight horns were fully visible, adding to her otherworldly appearance. Her long, whip-like tail lay flat on the floor, a constant reminder of her demonic nature.
Next to her lays an old notice poster from the town halls.
"Report suspicious figures to the guards."
A similar figure with large horns, wings and a tail is drawn onto it. It's supposed to represent the remaining demons that could be lurking from 5000 years ago.
The figure's ears are alerted when she hears a sound downstairs.
"Okay dear, that is the end of the story. Now, please go to bed, okay? I love you" a woman tells her child.
"Mamma, I am excited for my awakening. It should be soon right!"
"Yes, very soon dear. But please go to bed before the demons snatch you up."
Disgusted and annoyed she brings her knees up to her face, "A Demon, huh? Tell me, have you ever heard of a demon with no magical ability."
Because of the evolution of this world people can awaken their powers. There are four categories you can awaken under Sun, Moon, Dusk and Dawn. Logically, the time of day you awaken is the category you fall under. People usually awaken around the ages of 10 to 12 years.
"But for me, that has unfortunately never happened," she mutters under her breath.
After some silence, the figure takes that as her cue to leave and disappears into the night before she is discovered once more.
As she tiptoed past the watchful guards who were still scouring the area for her, she finally arrived at an abandoned building in the remotest part of the kingdom. The building appeared to be in a state of disrepair, with no sign of human activity around it, but for the animals that had taken over the place. Despite its dilapidated state, this place was her sanctuary, her solace, and her home for as long as she could remember. It was the only place where she could find refuge without the fear of getting caught and where she could finally rest her weary head.
"It's probably best I lay low for now...I gathered too much attention for today..."
