Ede

Preface

Preface

Apr 30, 2022

Before we get started with the story, please allow me to tell you, what makes this story peculiar.
As you may already know, I am a programmer. It is both my profession, as well as one of my passions.
And I would like to pass on some of the knowledge I have gathered to you and this is the way I have chosen.

Please note, that this is NOT a tutorial on programming. There are far better means to educate yourself on the matter, countless books and courses which teach you these things far better than I ever could.
This is still a story meant to entertain you.
Nevertheless, if you walk away having learned something new, well: Mission accomplished.

During the course of this story, which takes place a thousand years after 'the war that was to end all wars', the protagonist encounters the entity 'Ede', a powerful machine capable of restoring the Earth back to glory and splendor. (Please refer to my story 'Tisis' for details on that. Or read on. Of course I'd appreciate if you did both ;)).

Now, as I stated above, this story is a bit special.
There will occasionally be a chapter called 'Ede's lesson', which explains one of the more basic concepts of programming, which applies to all programming languages. I am not a teacher, so it might well suck hard, but I will try my best to explain it so Non-Programmers get it.

Each of these lessons will end with a 'challenge', where Ede asks the protagonist (and, by proxy, the reader) to put the concept (and those that came before it) into practice, because I firmly believe that theory is all nice, but only by putting it to work, you can actually learn something.

The following 'chapter' will then be a piece of source code in one of today's programming languages, that illustrates one way to achieve what Ede has asked. You may notice a trend regarding the choice of languages. ;)

You, as the reader, are free to participate in the challenge and leave your personal attempts in the comment section (in the programming language of your choice, of course). If I find they are doing what they are meant to, I will add them as 'possible answer' to the 'answer' chapter and attribute the solution to you.

You are, of course, also free to just skip Ede's lessons as well as the answer block if you are not interested.
They will not add anything to the story.

Finally, one last personal request: Please don't just leave your code snippets in the comment section, but also your thoughts and opinions. They will help me improve the story as a whole and continue to grow as a writer.
Don't be scared of speaking your mind, if I'm churning out a huge pile of bull, I need you, esteemed reader, to tell me.

I am counting on you here. :)

Thank you very much, all ye who you still want to accompany me on this particularly peculiar journey.

I'm very much a novice in programming. I learned a little bit of Arduino and "Basic Stamp" programming, but I haven't kept up on it. If I'm going to comment on the programming chapters, I'd prefer to write in my own style, if that's okay, since I don't really know much about actual coding.
