Everything Between Us

Prologue

Prologue

Oct 02, 2019

A knife hit to the side of the the bed next to Colin Eastern's head. The 13 year old suddenly woke up at the sudden vibrations on the wooden planks next to his mattress and the thunk of the knife sinking into the wood. Colin threw his head up from the pillows and frantically looked around he room. He wasn't sure which direction it had come from, seeing as he was sleeping. The person who tried to kill him could be in the same room.

Another knife hit the mattress next to his torso, creating a hole that air started to slowly hiss out of. Colin reasoned that the person who had thrown it was trying to inflict fear into him. A scare tactic. If they could, they probably would have hit him by now seeing as each of the knives had landing inches away from areas of his body that, if they landed, would have killed him.

Colin looked at the shattered window that the knives had come from. He couldn't see anyone outside of it, but of course, the person who was going to kill him probably wouldn't show themselves. Besides, it was the middle of the knife. Colin wasn't sure if he wanted to die. His life was complete and utter crap, but he still didn't want to die. He wondered who would want to kill him. Colin wasn't the best person, but he wasn't absolutely horrible.

A the knife flew through the window with nothing more than a swoosh and buried itself in Colin's right hand, pinning it to the now bloodstained wooden plank. He muttered a few curses and yanked it out of his hand, making him flinch in pain. This was it. The next knife would go forward and kill him. Colin couldn't move as he saw the last knife fly toward his heart.

~

Tyler Neverth was awake when the knife plunged through his bed's mattress, next to his head. He was up late texting his friend because of his damn insomnia. Tyler almost screamed, but then didn't. He couldn't scream. His mind was spinning and he was frozen from fear. He saw the shattered window that he had heard the knife crash through. Are you okay, Tyler? His friend texted him. Tyler found only the strength to type a weak, Have to go, to him before dropping his phone on the bed stand.

Another knife sank into the mattress next to Tyler's torso. Tyler reasoned that this could be for one of two reasons:

1. The person was trying to scare Tyler.

2. The person was missing.

A knife then stabbed into Tyler's hand. Tyler hissed in pain and took the knife and yanked it out and grabbed a small towel to tie around the wound to cinch the bleeding. He knew, somehow, that the next knife would land on in his heart. And it seemed he was right because at the moment a knife swiftly flew through the air, ready to plunge into Tyler's heart.

~

Then, a shadow started to cover the knife and Colin could feel that he could control it, even stop it. He disappeared from where he was lying in a flash of blue smoke and reappeared next to the knife. He had the handle in his hand and saw where the darkness had bitten into the knife and let it consume the rest. Another knife flew threw the window, but it was also quickly consumed by the shadows. Another knife and another and another, each only to disappear in the darkness of Colin's shadows.

~

A flash of light and then the knife started to be melted, but not really. The surface of the metal started to distort, but to also disappear. Tyler knew that if he wanted to, he could make the knife completely disappear with this new ability and even make it fly back toward the person who threw it. He disappeared in a flash of soft, red light, reappearing right next to the knife. Tyler grabbed the knife and the rest of it was eaten by the light. More knives flew toward him, each one only to disappear through a flash of light.
