Fiery Hair

Prelude: the minstrel's song

Prelude: the minstrel's song

Feb 09, 2020

My journey through Varlaurea continent took me here, in a tavern of the kingdom of Bricatia. Sitting at the table watching the raindrop splashing on the street outside the window, enjoying the cool breezes running on my skin. Next to the open fire pit in the middle of the inn’s hall, the local minstrel was playing a cheerful tune to entertain the tavern’s patrons. A lovely woman she is, the warm light of the fireplace enveloped the woman's slender figure, illuminating a loose bun of red curly hair behind her head. Every strand of her hair bears a very bright shade of red, reflecting the light of the fire pit and glows like they’re carrying some kind of mystical spark in them. As she finished off the last notes of the song and took a sip of ale. I came near and expressed my admiration of her crimson locks. With a warm smile, the minstrel turned her lovely oblong face, toward me in thankfulness. After some small talk, I gave her some coins and requested a song, and most preferentially a tale.

The minstrel thinks for a few seconds, then her emerald eyes glistening as she asks me if I ever hear the tale of lady Morwenna. I expressed my interest and so her fingers danced on her lute, as the lute’s strings hum a rueful tune, the minstrel sings…

“Traveler, oh traveler.

By the warm fire, took your seat

Quell your thirst and rest your weary feet.

Let me sing you this one story,

Let me sing you this tale of sorrow and glory.

Oh traveler, from distant land.

Have you heard the tale of the lady?

Have you heard that tale of tragedy?

Long ago, lived a lady of noble stock,

Tall and fair, oh! the lady of fiery lock.

Morwenna, fair Morwenna.

‘Twas her name, loved by the common peoples,

‘Twas her plight, hated by the Rumunus’s eagles.

Let me sing you, of how she has fought,

Let me tell you, of why she’s forgotten by nought.”
