The air smelled of smoke, ashes filled the air and the blue sky was painted a dark grey. A house doused and set aflame flickered in the distance. Tripping over roots and rocks a little girl ran for her life, literally. Her eyes burned red with fury, wishing to set the world on fire. She had run out of tears, leaving red streaks lining her face.
“We love you” White eyes whispered in her mind, the feeling of her mother’s touch still on her cheek.
“Run” was all the pitch black eyes had said, her father’s stony demeanor kept solid even until the last moments.
White and black turned to purple and blazing red, and left to strike fear and anger into anyone who dared try to go after the fleeing girl. Bright purple and angry red faded away slowly, leaving many to die with eyes a different color than they had before.
Stumbling out of the trees and onto a small dirt road, the girl broke.
Running for hours had exhausted her, and adrenaline could only take her so far. She curled into a ball in the middle of the road, not knowing or caring where she was, she began to weep. Stress hitting her head on, she kept crying not knowing why, and not knowing where the tears came from. Clutching onto her shawl like a lifeline, and digging her rings into the ground, letting her tears water the cracked earth. Fire burned like no other in her mind, she wanted the world to burn, and everyone to experience the same painful death her parents had.
“Take them” her father had shoved the matching rings into her palm and pushed her out the back door. One ruby and one amethyst, perfectly interlocking when placed on the same finger, both clinging to each other and not coming apart. Her parents had worn the matching rings for as long as she could remember, her mother was always fiddling with her red ring, and her father’s dainty purple ring looking out of place on the large man. They wore each other's colors to symbolize how they carried the other’s burden.
Thoughts consuming her, she didn’t even hear the clopping of hooves growing louder, and louder in the distance. Until a voice that yelled “Hey!” snapped her out of her thoughts. She forced herself to dim her blazing red eyes, making them a light pink. She looked up to see a girl with shining chestnut hair and hazel eyes grabbing her hand. The hazel eyed girl dragged her out of the road just in time for a speeding carriage to fly by, missing both of them by seconds. She stared at the beautiful girl in awe, she had just saved her life. “Where’s home?” the brown haired girl asked. The girl merely shook her head, and the other understood. “Do you have a home” another shake of the head. “Ok! You can come home with me, we can be best friends!” She yelled cheerily. The tear streaked girl smiled a sad smile as her new friend helped her up off the ground and then dusted herself off. The girl finally got a look at what the sunny smiled girl was wearing, a beautiful emerald green dress that went all the way down to right past her ankles, leaving two low heeled shoes exposed. The girl thought heels were a bit much for a girl that looked about her age, only seven. However she didn’t dare question it, she did not want the girl offering her sanctuary to change her mind. “Wait! Before I bring you home, what is your name? Mine name is Helena!”
The girl brushed her dusty purple hair out of her eyes, and brought them to meet Helena’s.
“Dia”
Helena didn’t notice Dia’s eyes fade from light pink to a striking silver that day. If she had known Dia was sure she would have been slaughtered like her parents. However, the girl didn’t know, and Dia was dedicated to making sure that it stayed that way.
