Laughter echoed through the trees. The felidae ran through the thick smoke that had filled the air right after the attack. His breath came in painful gasps as he clutched his bleeding side in a futile effort to slow the steady flow. The smoke stung at his eyes and he began to wheeze and cough as he tried to escape. He hadn’t been able to save her, but he had to escape. He had to warn—.
The felidae tipped forward and fell as his foot caught in a tree root. He tried to pull himself up to his feet, but the fire seemed to come out of nowhere, blocking all paths of possible escape. He was trapped. The branches overhead crackled in the flames. The smoke grew so thick that he couldn’t see past his nose. A loud noise came from above as a branch broke in the fire. The felidae barely managed to get to his feet and immediately ran towards the fire ahead, hoping that he could get through the blaze without getting burnt too much. His fur caught fire and he cried out in pain. There was a flash of light before he fell into the darkness and knew nothing more.
