'Did I just watch someone get hit by a car?'
Lily needed to catch her breath, convince herself this wasn't happening. Her best friend didn't just get hit by a car. They were all going to be back at Joe's Ice Cream eating the famous birthday cake Sunday tomorrow. Then once Summer was over they'd be back at school together, right? Sitting at the same table near the cheerleaders, making a small amount of money off of homework answers.
No, she was fine. They were fine, everything was fine.
The screech of the tires rushed her back to reality like a block of ice falling on her head. It was like a dream you have when you've been watching too many dramatic movies. Mr. Christopher jumping out of his car to check on my friend, people stopping their cars to perform CPR or call 911. Her friend was just completely frozen on the ground. She was completely frozen on the sidewalk.
You can't imagine the feeling can you? Watching someone you spend so much time with bloodied up by the front of your teacher's car. It's like time just stops. You think that destiny took the wrong person. That the hit was meant for someone else to take. Why was it them? It made no sense. Anyone, god, anyone but them.
Do you pull over for ambulances on the street? Ever think that the one second you save them can save someone else? Probably not. Lily didn't even do it. Not until after it all happened. Because they were one second too late to that ambulance. One second too far gone.
Watch life. If you're not careful enough, it'll turn right around and hit you in the back.
