The atmosphere was gloomy, and the wind sent shivers down my spine. Below, wooden parts of a ship lay dried up on the shore. I heard it was part of an expedition gone wrong, but I didn't look into it further.
I simply washed my hands and began drying them until I saw a spider on the wall. It had long legs and a small body. I was prepared to squash it until a thought struck me. Why not try putting myself in the spider's shoes?
Imagine if I were the tiny creature entering this house. To me, it's small, but to the spider, it's practically a massive cave. Picture myself seeing this giant towering over me, squishing me in one swift movement as if I were nothing.
I could only imagine how scared I would be. I wondered if the spider felt the same. If the roles were reversed, and I was as tiny as the spider, with the spider having human intelligence, would it think the same way? I can't answer that. This intelligence of ours is a blessing and a curse.
Most animals our size, upon seeing that spider, would either kill it, play with it, or simply ignore it. Either way, they wouldn't feel much. But we humans have the strangest of thoughts. So, spider, I'll leave you alone. You better catch those flies regularly, or you won't be welcome in my house.
I go out at 7:00 AM the latest and head to the park to feed the ducks. The air is cool, and there are no children. I loathe children: their yells, their laughter, their smiles so unaware of how the world works... Ugh. I wish I were them.
I held my head low and heard footsteps approaching me, then stopping. A man was staring at me from behind. I turned around and saw him. He wore a waistcoat, had a long mustache, and was blonde with eyes as blue as a summer ocean. I simply ignored him, but he smiled and said, "I assume you're Warden Blackwood?"
He smiled, giving that polite smile a proud teacher would give a student. I already despised this man. "What do you want? Make it quick."
"As you wish. I'm sure you heard of the island discovered a few years ago called Nesos Aphanos Chronos."
I did hear of it but never paid much attention to it. I didn't say anything to this man, simply analyzing his body movements, waiting to see if his facade would ever slip.
"The island is the last piece of land discovered on our blue dot, so as you can imagine, a lot of people got excited for many different reasons. A few years back, an expedition was launched, and they never came back. The same happened to the second one. But of course, something strange happened. The remains of the ship somehow washed ashore here, even though the island is far away from our coast. What's more is that two survivors came back."
I was utterly shocked. This sounded like a hoax. "And why are you telling me all of this?"
The man grinned. "Because we'll be making another expedition to the island as we got information from the two surviving crewmen. And of course, you're an experienced survivalist. All those expeditions you took in the Amazon and Africa, all the wild beasts you've slain, and your brave participation in the Great War."
"Enough! I don't have time for your bullshit." I stormed off.
"You would want to hear more, Mr. Blackwood, as we found something astonishing." He raised his voice and followed me. I was getting annoyed.
"I couldn't care less."
The man then stopped and calmly said, "We found God."
