Thousands of years ago, an angel fell in love with a human. This angel wasn't built for human emotions and the love became twisted. The angel became obsessed. He watched her every day. One day, he decided to present himself to her. He changed his form and came to see her as a serpent. He spoke to her and found though she was indeed lovely, she lacked the higher intelligence that he had been given. That wouldn't do. He enticed her to take some fruit from the tree.
His anger grew when she shared this gift with her male. He watched as his father's wrath took hold. The woman and her male were cast from their paradise home and his brother was ordered to guard the entrance. His father, in his anger, destroyed the garden. This place of beauty would become a monument to darkness.
Betrayal, anger, hatred, lust, envy, vengeance. These emotions ripped through the once pure grounds. These emotions born from the favored son hailed great destruction. His father had punished him severely. Locking him in what was once a paradise, the son began to lose his mind. Imprisoned alone with his festering hatred, demons began to form. Born from the negative emotions of the celestial, the demons carried no concept of good or love. Selfish desire, anger, and destruction. This became his progeny.
After much time had passed, his strength had finally overwhelmed his brother and warden. His brother had barely survived the brutal assault. Many of his loyal brothers had waited for this chance to turn against their father. Their father used a great deal of power to cast them from heaven and strip their celestial status.
As the favored son fell, he threw one final curse at his father. If he and his loyal brothers could not enter heaven, the father and his devout sons would never enter the mortal plains and stay whole. The garden had truly become a hell.
He and his brothers had left their realm to seek out, and exact vengeance on the woman who caused their brother's downfall. Their father's wrath was inescapable though. As they entered the mortal realm, the fallen celestials were stripped of their immortality. The weakest of the brothers burned like falling stars. His anger had refueled, blaming the woman for their destruction.
He searched for many years for the woman before finally finding her, with her male and their offspring. She had borne the male several children. The thought had enraged him, so rather than killing her, he took her. His brothers had found other women to bring back with them to the realm of the fallen. Though, only the strongest brothers had been able to cross back, once again decimating their numbers. The rest became trapped in the mortal realm.
He took the woman back to where it all began. There, at the tree, he chained her soul to his. Over the years, the torment began to drive her insane. Her longevity had tied to his, driving her humanity out. She too became like the land.
The day she bore his first son, her maternal instinct recovered, bringing back to her the smallest bit of her humanity. She burned with a need to protect the life she created.
The first son, she realized, would have the power to shift as his father had that fateful day. Her heart cried as she named him for the destruction he was sure to bring. Hadeon.
She fell pregnant with a second son, who was born in a monstrous form. She realized that this child would have his father's powers to manipulate the land. This child, she named Sephtis, for his line would surely bring death.
The third son born would become her favored child and her greatest sadness. She named him Drystan. He was the only child who retained her humanity.
The final child had been born a girl. A beautiful baby girl with wicked eyes. This had become the favored child of the father for she had inherited his ability to wield magic. He named her Deianira, for one day, she would be the destruction of man.
As the children grew, their differences had become obvious. Though they had all retained a bit of their mother's humanity, only Drystan had started to show signs of aging, as their mother should have. Thus, his lineage would become the closest race to mortal Nachtmoor would ever have again.
Each child soon found suitable marriages among the other fallen, except the one who would remain human. Not even a semi-immortal would have him. The woman begged her husband to once more travel to the land of mortals and find a wife for their son. Unable to deny her, for though his affections were twisted, he still loved her, he did as she requested.
This time though, when he entered the land of the favored, he felt the curse his father had lain. Determined, he found his youngest son a bride and returned to his home. He weakened severely upon his return and in turn, so was his wife. Having his obsession chained to his soul, his power had fractured. He and the woman had started to die.
He divided the land among his four children, using the last of his abilities to ensure their continuance. His wife chose to sacrifice the last of her soul to her favored son, to ensure his land would be free of the father's curse. Most of the demons that had manifested from the father's imprisonment became dormant throughout Nachtmoor.
Great and terrible magic ripped through the lands, truly dividing the land and creating natural barriers between the siblings. Each sibling had lived their longevity in their respective land, vowing to never set foot outside their lands. For years, their descendants followed this unspoken law.
As time continued, the rule became forgotten. Cultures developed and merged. Small border squabbles rose and settled. The demons had remained mostly dormant. Soon, life began to evolve and truly terrible demons re-awakened, spreading like a plague. The land that had once again become fruitful turned like sour milk. Nachtmoor had become a hellish imprisonment the favored son had fought against. Darkness covered the sun and crops began to mutate. And so, once again, a beautiful-almost-paradise became a curse to its inhabitants.
