Darkness had dawned on the estate, guards stood absentmindedly at their posts on the outside gates. The long gardens of the estate stretched forth towards a mansion. It loomed over its estate, as if it could watch over its vast acres.
A few miles away a girl watched the mansion with a spyglass. Silent and focused, she flattened the spyglass, stowing in one of her many belt bags. She pulled her cloak around her shoulders and ducked below her hood as she swiftly made her way towards the wall of the estate; away from guard posts, this area was unchecked, as documented in her plans. She made a mental note to tip her informant heavily for this. Running up to the wall and pulling herself up to the top, she made her way into the estate with ease and grace. The girl hugged against the wall to avoid attention, were any surveying eyes to spot her. She stealthily made her way across the gardens of the estate, towards the looming building.
Its walls were coated with thick Ivy. She peeked into one of the ground floor windows, seeing no one inside she climbed the Ivy, slowly ascending the building. It was times like this she was grateful to have her gloves, Ivy leaves a nasty sting. As she approached the window of the spare bedroom, she slowed her ascension. Quietly she brought herself parallel to the window, pulling a small, thin, wedge shaped tool from a belt bag. She placed the tool under the sliding window, cracking it ajar. With her left hand she gripped the Ivy, while she unsheathed her dagger and reached across with her right. inserting the blade into the space below the window, she twisted the handle. This caused the blade to widen the gap and provide purchase for her expert hands to open the window. She was in.
After pushing the window up and open, she slid in. Retrieving her tools as she entered. She looked around the dark room. Barely able to make out her surroundings with the weak light from under the door. Reaching into a larger belt bag on the back of her belt, she fished for her light globe. Retrieving the orb, she held it in front of her. The clear glass sphere was perforated at the top, and had a wick inside, which drew oil from the brass container under the orb. She pulled a match from her belt bag, unscrewed the globe from its base, and lit the wick. Screwing the globe back into place, she surveyed her surroundings. The room was dusty and unkempt, there were wooden crates stacked up the walls. There was a disused bed to her right, covered in dust and cobwebs. While she would have liked to give this room a good cleaning, she had a task to complete. She quickly scanned the crates to her left for any valuables worth taking. Although many of them held wine and other valuable liquors, they would be difficult to make off with, and wouldn't make it to fence. She moved silently, almost as a shadow, to the door of the room. Turning the handle slowly to minimise noise, she opened the door.
The brightly lit landing was nearly blinding for a girl who’d been skulking around in the dark for the past few hours. She winced as she allowed herself to adjust to the light. Closing the door behind her, she sank to her haunches to minimise her visibility. Looking around she spied a door to her right, cracked ajar she noticed the room had a tiled floor, likely a bathroom. She elected to venture onto the landing, moving across towards another door. She stopped in front of the door, and held her ear against the wood. Hearing nothing, not even the snoring she’d come to expect from the realm's bloated aristocrats. She pulled gently on the door handle to suppress noise as she gained access to the room.
The room was dark, much like the storage room she’d entered through. The large four poster bed loomed forth, as seemed to swallow the already gargantuan room. Part of the girl wanted nothing more than to sprawl out on such an inviting premise, but she couldn't. She had a task to complete. She closed the door behind her, with the same care she took to open it. Her path, illuminated by her globe, was easy to navigate. Moving towards a dresser to her left, she spied a Jewelry box. She took the box and stowed it in her back belt bag. Some Jewelry boxes had music boxes in them. While charming, they had ruined many a heist in the past and were becoming an annoyance. She moved on from the dresser, moving towards a bedside table to the left of the bed. The carpet in this room was thick and soft, affording the girl more movement without fear of detection. She opened the drawer on the table. Inside was an ornate ring. Silver, with a spiked wheel on it.
'A good find’, she thought to herself. Before, placing it in a belt bag. She turned to leave the room as she heard footsteps. She froze. A woman's giggling could be heard, getting closer as she climbed the stairs. A man's footsteps close behind her. This was a bad position to be in for the girl. She looked around her, searching for a hiding place. As she moved towards the window to escape the situation, the door opened. The woman saw the girl and screamed, tripping forwards on her dress. In her panic she didn't brace herself as she fell. Thud. The woman hit the carpet, face first. The man, close behind, entered the room, unaware of the prone body in front of him and also tripped. It would have been comical, had what happened next not occurred.
