If Only You Were Dead to Me

I Decline to Speak About It (Not)

I Decline to Speak About It (Not)

Jun 25, 2025

There's a person I can't forget. Someone buried so deep in my memories that I can't seem to forget him, but I don't even remember anything that would help me point him out in a crowd, just a single name. It's not even a real name, but a nickname. You're probably wondering what the nickname is if it's supposedly that important to me, but the funny thing is that when I want to remember it, it just disappears from my mind. It's to the point that it's ridiculous and because it goes away when I want to remember, I can't even talk to my friends or family members about it. I'm sure they've noticed me dazing off in thought, but I can't answer their questions when they ask, so they just gave up on asking me.

Today was supposed to be the first day of summer, but it somehow felt like it was the dead of winter because I was so cold. It also didn't help that today was my last day before my two weeks after quitting my job were up, so I really wasn't in the mood to talk to my co-workers and most of them were just disappointed in me for quitting. I couldn't really tell them the reason why I quit anyway, because it wasn't something that a lot of people should know... I signed a non-disclosure agreement to not tell them or anyone else, but I was actually transferred to a completely different project in a far off place. My boss called it a promotion, but I'm wondering if it's actually a demotion. He never really liked me to begin with and I was the only out non-binary person in the company. I just hope that these chills have nothing to do with my new job.

"Rory, I just wanted to say that we only want what's best for you," my co-worker and one of the three employees I've trained, Jennifer Anderson, said, "But did you really have to quit like that?" The other two employees were Caleb Thompson and my newest problem AKA the one who is supposed to replace me: Wilson Grey.

"It's out of my hands, Jennifer," I said, "But did they turn the AC all the way up or something? I'm freezing." Jennifer chuckled, but then realized that I wasn't joking.

"Rory, the AC isn't even on," Jennifer said, "The tempurature is too low for it to turn on, but it's still just barely too low. Are you okay? Is it your sixth sense working overtime again?"

"Are you kidding me?" I asked, "If it's warm in here, then my sixth sense is doing more than overtime. I probably got a cold or something, but it didn't hit me until I was sitting here at my desk. Where is Wilson today anyway? I thought he would be here on time for our last day of me training him to be my replacement." Jenn frowned. Wilson was training to be my replacement, but he was always late or finding some way to get out of it. I wasn't exactly sure why.

"They didn't tell you?" Jenn asked.

"They didn't tell me what?" I asked, frustrated.

"Wilson did overtime last night to finish the training by himself," Jenn said, "He said that he felt uncomfortable around you, but didn't tell us why."

"Figures," I said, "He's always been unreliable when it comes to my training. Is there anything wrong with the way I train people? I mean, I trained you and Caleb before, but there weren't any problems there, right?" Jenn sighed.

"Caleb and I are very different people compared to Wilson, Rory," Jenn said, "He might need a stricter teacher, or he might just feel uncomfortable being so close to you, because you are very attractive."

"Haha, very funny, Jenn," I said, "I know for a fact that he doesn't like me."

"And how do you know that?" Jenn asked.

"He..." I said, but then thought about it, "Oh my gosh. You might be right, Jenn. He flirted with me when we first met, but I blew him off saying that it would never work out. So if anything, he might've used to like me?" Jenn sighed.

"But he's not the man of your dreams, is he, Rory?" Jenn said.

"Why would you even say that, Jenn?" I asked, "How would you know if it's a man that's in my dreams anyway?" Lina smirked.

"You pretty much just admitted it," Jenn said.

"I did not," I said.

"You're blushing," Jenn said.

"No, that's just the fever," I said. Jenn chuckled.

"Well, I better be going," Jenn said, "But if you're up for it later on, do you want to meet for a drink?"

"I want to," I said, "But I can't."

"Why not?" Jenn asked.

"My plane leaves 4 hours after work," I said, "And you know how busy airport security is." Jenn's eyes widened.

"You're moving that soon?" Jenn asked.

"Unfortunately, there's really nothing I can do about it," I said, "It's really out of my hands."

"Do you want to have lunch together with Caleb and I then?" Jenn asked.

"It would be nice," I said, "But the Manager asked me to meet him before lunch, so I might take a while with him."

"We'll be sure to wait for you," Jenn said, "As one last hurrah."

"Don't wait too long," I said, "You know that getting hangry waiting for me isn't the best mood to leave in." Jenn chuckled.

"I know," Jenn said, "See you later, Rory."

"Bye, Jenn," I said.

By the time my meeting with the manager was over, lunch was almost completely over. I rushed over to where Jenn, Caleb, and I usually sit, but they had already left the work cafeteria. If only the manager didn't yell about completely useless information, I would've made it. I decided to go to both of their desks to say goodbye before I left at the end of the day, as the only important thing that the manager told me just now was that I was supposed to leave two hours early today. When the time came, I said goodbye to only Jenn and Caleb. Then, I embarked on my journey.
