Obeying the commands of a tiny, prideful prince and guarding him from the enemies of the crown is hard, but the immortal factor helps a ton.
Especially when the little guy wanted to put himself into mindless danger.
Or mindless fun.
"Hey! Get back here!"
The boy simply giggled and ran barefoot through the long, polished hall. Arms flailing and a foolish grin on his face, his stubby legs tottering away quickly. Apparently the prince had slipped away from the unsuspecting maid when she went to pick up his clean clothes, turning to find that he was gone before she could properly clothe him.
Panicking with tears in her eyes, she ran to the only person who was able to catch him.
Me.
Boots thudding, I ran after the boy. Long, auburn tresses tied with a red ribbon whipped against my back, legs moving smoothly and fast from the lack of armour.
He may have had an early start but I had the advantage of having longer legs and not being a seven year old child.
"Wynter, you better stop right there young man or I'm inform the king and queen of your behaviour!"
The little, bare-bottomed prince stilled almost instantly, feel skidding a bit on the smooth floor. He turned and faced me, giant, blue eyes watering slightly.
"You wouldn't tell mummy and daddy, would you, Silo?"
I laughed darkly, roughly patting his dark, brown-haired head, swooping him up and into my arms. "No, but you still fell for it."
He gasped. "But- but you said that-"
I laughed again. "I lied."
He replied, frowning and pouting. "You aren't allowed to lie, you're a knight!"
"I can if it's for a good reason."
"And what reason is that?" Wynter asked, inquisitively.
"To get the kingdom's little prince fully clothed and ready to see his mother!" I growled playfully with a grin.
I cradled him in my arms and his nose rested in the crook of my neck. He grasped my white shirt in his small fist and began playing with my ribbon.
Walking back to his room in powerful strides, I saw his maid, wearing a long, dark blue dress and plain, white apron, sobbing silently by the closed door into her hands.
"You, little boy, have made your maid cry! What do you have to say for yourself!" I scolded, whispering to him.
He buried his face deeper into my neck, mumbling and attempting to make himself appear smaller than he already was. Wynter always was terrible at hide and seek.
The maid took one glance at me and the boy, then ran to us, crying openly now.
"Oh, Lady Knight! Thank you! I do not know what would have happened if you were not here!" She cried in immense gratitude. Her eyes were red.
Dealing with tearful lady-maids were not in my job credentials unless I was rescuing them from terrifying beasts.
And children.
Laughing awkwardly, I handed her the prince. "It's alright, just call me again if he starts getting out of hand."
"Yes, oh, thank you so much! You are much too kind, Lady Knight! I will do just that!" Nodding furiously, she carried the sulking boy into the room.
"I'm sorry," I heard him say quietly just before the door closed. He was going to sulk, I just knew.
Sighing, I slowly walked back to my room. Now that the moment of excitement was over, it was time for me to take a nap until someone else called for me.
