Sam stands in his bedroom looking out the window admiring his new neighbor. A girl; new fellow alumni he hadn't seen her before, but she clearly wasn't a freshman. She looks familiar though he thought, quickly interrupted, "Have a good first day, Danielle!" he heard from the woman standing in the doorway of the house next door.
Sam had heard that name before, "It's her, isn't it?" he thought. Sam quickly backed away from the curtains when she began to turn toward his second story window. A quick glance at the clock and he grabbed his back and shuffled down the stairs. He turned to the fridge and read the attached note, "Enjoy your first day of school, eat before you leave, love you! - Mom"
Sam grabbed the note, tossed it in the trash and made his way out the front door, quickly making his way to the sidewalk. He looked right and then looked left and crossed the road. Sam noticed that same girl walking in front of him again. As they continued on another man approached her and they began talking and laughing. She turned and noticed Sam following behind and watching them chat, but kept walking. A couple seconds later she turned again and saw Sam staring while he was lost in thought trying to remember how he knew her. "Hey, stop staring at me, you creep!" Danielle turned around.
"Woah..." Sam replied as he came to a stop, full of shock
The man beside Danielle puts on a devilish face and takes a step toward Sam, but Danielle grabs his arm, "Just leave him..." she said.
That's when Sam remembered that face, that name. He thought back to his childhood summer he spent at the neighborhood playground being picked on daily by the other kids. He remembered being teased mercilessly until a girl that all the kids had a crush on stopped them and stood up for him. He remembers her long brown hair as he helped him stand up after he was pushed down, "My name's Danielle, are you okay?" she said.
His mind slipped forward and remembered their friendship and all the times that played together as children. He remembers chasing her, playing tag, falling down and crying, and then remembers her moving away from the same house she came out of today. He remembers waving at a leaving moving truck as she hung out the window with a huge smile on her face waving goodbye. "Whoa, how did I forget that?" he thought.
He quickly returned from his thoughts and watched them as they walked away, but his mind was screaming only one thing... "Is that really her?"
