The Beginning

The Beginning

Jul 06, 2021

“Hello my love.” He stood there, trying to hold back his tears. “Hope you’re doing swell...everythings crazy right now...I long for your calmness.”

He sucked in a breath, desperately wanting the tears to stop flowing.

“They...ummm. They want me to court someone else, now that you’re gone; but I-i can’t.”

“You left me, alone.” He broke. “We promised each other a life together. So why? Why did you have to leave me?”

“Please my love, please...come back to me… please, I need you.” Silas sobbed, dropping to his knees in front of his love’s grave.

No matter how hard he wished or begged, Ian was never going to come back to him.

That was the end of it.

The story was over, leaving tears rolling down his cheeks. This can’t be the end, how can this be the end? The story shouldn’t end like this. They were supposed to end up together and finally get married like they hoped.

Phillip slowly closed the book, tears dripping from his face; falling onto the cover of the book. The tears didn’t stain the cover, they simply evaporated. Thanks to the cover having a magic spell casted onto it by the author; knowing it would leave their readers heartbroken.

There wasn’t much magic in this world but enough to cast simply house spells, like having the broom sweep on its own, boiling a pot of water without a fire, hovering a few feet off the ground to be able to reach the top step, emotions controlling somethings around you or putting a spell on a book so your tears won’t stain the book.

The limitation on magic didn’t stop him from dressing up as a witch. So much that he’s wearing a purple pointy hat with gold stars on it, black cape, white long sleeve shirt, light blue pajama pants and fuzzy socks. Since Phillip was crying about the ending of the book, his hat started to droop down slowly falling off his head and onto the couch; releasing his messy dirty blonde hair into his face.

He clutched the book to his chest, also wishing with Silas that Ian would come back to him. Phillip had so much hope for those two, that learning Ian was never coming back broke his heart. A little piece of him wanted them to get together in the end because then maybe he could find love just like theirs. If they couldn’t be happy together in the end then what chance does Phillip have of finding someone to love.

The book was about a prince fighting for his life seeing that no one accepted him for who he was. His parents didn’t want him to be the heir to the throne, so they sent out flyers; talking about a month-long tournament to see who would be the next king. During that month the prince falls for one of the contestants, who in return also falls for him. The contestant wins and gets crowned king. In the end the prince gets murdered, while the contestant is left to rule the kingdom by himself. They had planned on ruling together once the parents were out of the picture, but it never happened.

“Fuck you.” He cursed the book. “Fuck you! And your author!”

Phillip chucked the book across the room, hitting the bookshelf; knocking more books down. He sobbed on the couch, clutching his knees to his chest. It had been his favorite book, everything was amazing but the ending.

“They were supposed to end up together!” He shouted at the book. “Ian and Silas should have ruled together!”

Phillip continued to shout at no one, letting all of his frustration out. Finally being able to breathe normally, he whipped his tears away and brushed the hair out of his face. Walking over to the bookshelf, he started placing the books back on the shelf. Phillip picked up the book and stared at it, fighting back the tears from coming.

“You’re a stupid book.”

He dropped the book back down on the ground, leaving it there. He walked out of the living room, down the hallway and into his bedroom. Phillip unhooked the cape, letting it fall onto the floor; flopping down on the bed, curling under the blankets. He grabbed his cat stuffed animal that had the pattern of tiger on it, but it was brown not orange. He then waved his hand in the direction of the door, shutting it and then towards the light switch; turning off the lights.

He silently cried again, hugging the stuffed animal as he cried. Slowly drifting off to sleep.

Phillip is in love with Ian and Silas from his favorite novel; Contest of the Heart. The novel's ending is sad and breaks Phillip's heart. He gets emotional and pissed off at the book, ultimately causing him to be put into the novel.
There is little magic in Phillip's world where emotions can transfer magic to inanimate objects. In Contest of the Heart his magic intensifies, claiming himself as a witch he goes on a mission. To change the horrible ending of the book, reaching for the happy ending that he wants.
Phillip learns along the way, things can be hidden from the readers if the author didn't write it in the novel. Making the goal to a happy ending much harder than he realized.
