Let Me Put You On Hold

You Gotta Fire Up, You Gotta Let Go

You Gotta Fire Up, You Gotta Let Go

- Imagine Dragons, I’m So Sorry

It’s been a year. A year since the most defining week of my life. Bucky’s in Wakanda, put into cryo again by King T’Challa. Dad says it’s to finally get rid of Hydra’s brainwashing, though there will still be trigger words.

Bruce disappeared while I was being held by the Warners. None of us know where he is, but there’s every hope that he’s alive. Wanda and Vision ran off to be in Scotland, no doubt snogging each other.

Peter and I managed to stay strong. I never had any doubt that we would last. It’s nice having someone to be a hero with that’s my age.

Dad, Aunt Nat and Sam are properly on the run now. S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn’t stop people coming after them so they had to hide. They visit once a fortnight, long enough to spend time with me and Papa but little enough to not be tracked.

Sometimes, when it’s not safe enough for them to come by, I go to them. This is one of these times. Aunt Nat and I have been sparring for about 20 minutes. I make a T with my hands and walk over to the bench inside the safe house.

Sitting down, I squirt water into my mouth from my water bottle, then use a small towel to wipe sweat from my forehead. I hand Aunt Nat her own water bottle as she stands in front of me.

“You’re getting pretty good, B,” She says with a smile.

“I learnt from the best,” I return, smile matching hers. My phone pings and I look at it to see a text from Peter.

Hey how long are you gonna be? We’re leaving soon.

I look at the time, and sure enough it’s 7:30. Our class is going on a field trip to the Museum of Modern Art at 7:45, and I shouldn’t miss it.

I’ll leave now. Shouldn’t take too long. Hold them up as long as you can.

I stand up and turn to Aunt Nat. “Thanks for the spar, really needed it. But I’ve got to go to school. Going to MoMA for a school trip, shouldn’t miss it.”

At that point in time, Dad and Sam come in.

“Sorry to interrupt this little spar,” Dad starts. “But the three of us have to go to Scotland. Vision turned his tracking off and Tony wants us to keep an eye on him and Wanda.” He looks at me. “And I thought you had a field trip in 15 minutes?”

“I do, but I wanted a spar first. I’ll get changed and then go to school. It’s literally a five minute fly in my suit. Don’t worry about me.”

“You know that I have to. But stay safe. Don’t do anything dumb and don’t break anything.”

“Relax. What do you take me for? A baby?”

I walk into the small room set aside for a locker room, grabbing my clothes. I leave the door mostly open - the only three people here don’t care about seeing me without clothes, since they have when I was a kid. And I’m not all that self-conscious.

My family doesn’t have very soft voices either, so I can hear every word that Dad, Aunt Nat and Sam say.

“You haven’t told her about Morgan yet, have you?” Sam asks.

“No, not yet. Haven’t found the right time. Besides, Tony and I...aren’t really on the best terms? We want to have Morgan and give Blythe a sister, but we might not end up raising her together.”

“He doesn’t support this, does he?”

“No. Tony doesn’t like that I’m on the run and he doesn’t like that I’ve dragged Blythe into it, even if it was her choice.”

I think about it as I listen. Dad and Papa are planning on having another kid, a girl. They want to name her Morgan. It can’t be Aunt Nat who’s being a surrogate because...well, there’s no way.

I can’t think of someone else, someone who it could be. It’s not Wanda...maybe Pepper? I guess Papa would trust her enough to let her have his kid. But why wouldn’t Dad and Papa tell me that they weren’t on good terms? Why would they hide it from me?

“I’m sensing rising levels of stress in you, Blythe,” F.R.I.D.A.Y. says as my helmet covers my face.

I take deep breaths. “You’re right. I need to calm down. And I have 10 minutes to get to school.”

I run out to where the others are and give them a quick goodbye, not stopping for a proper one. I jet through the sky, pushing my repulsors almost to their limits. Within 5 minutes, I arrive at school. Ducking behind a dumpster, my suit comes off and I grab my backpack that I stored there. I then run out and greet Peter, Ned, Mikayla and Michelle.

A year. That's how long it's been. A year since Blythe decided to be a hero. A year since everything in her life changed.
When she decided to be a hero, she forgot that she would have to fight actual villains. She comes to realise that Dylan was nothing compared to what's coming next.
