March 21, 2X12....
It was the day when Pari realised something she’d rather be ignorant of.
Pari along with her friends was on a trip to the Clivi mountains. The mountains were near the outskirts of the city. Although one could drive to the mountain top, the group chose to walk to the top. It was, afterall, a trip to commemorate the graduation of her seniors who would soon be leaving.
It was a tough climb, not to mention, pretty steep too. They had to, at times, climb on all fours. The view they saw upon reaching was worth the efforts they put in. They had a quick meal at the mountain-top restaurant before going sight-seeing, clicking pictures and indulging in the scenery.
Pari, her best friend Avyan (or Yan as she called him) and their senior Matt were talking to each other. Matt, who was an year older than the other two, took care of them for the past three years until his graduation. He would be leaving right after this short trip. The next day when Pari and Yan would wake up, he would be out of their physical reach. That’s why they are cherishing their time with him- the time they met, the time they were taken care of and the time when they worked as partners in crime to pull off pranks. Those times now would only be found in their memory.
A while into their chat, the love of Matt’s life requested his help and whisked him away from the doted juniors. The happy juniors relentessly teased him as he moved in his ‘now’ girlfriend’s direction. A smal rock under his foot caused a bit of instability and caused him to fall forward. Pari who was near him stumbled back while trying to help him stabilise. She probably would have fell to the foot of the mountain considering they were very close to the edge.
Probably would have.... if it was not for the wall she seemed to hit on her downfall(?).
She opened her eyes, her mind curious why she was still not tumbling down the mountain. She found her best friend with a worried look.
“Ri, you okay?” he asked. His brown hair swept in the gentle wind. He helped her stand on her feet. She was still shivering at the thought of what could’ve transpired.
“Yeah...”
She thanked him and reaffirmed her best condition. Their senior came to them. As one would expect, he panicked and started fussing about the whole thing.
Pari tried to calm him down while she looked to check if Yan was alright. She saw him sigh in relief. The worry on his face vanished into a smile of relief. Looking at him, it felt like a great disaster has been put off.
Something felt off to Pari. Her intuition was saying so. Those reactions were not what she would expect of a friend. It was like how Matt reacted whenever Felicia (Matt’s girlfriend) was hurt. How did he react so fast to save her? It was like he was there before anything even happened. The worry in his eyes too... It felt too genuine to be -
That night Pari couldn’t sleep. She was affected by Matt’s departure but it was her best friend that kept her awake. His eyes would flash in her mind constantly as she tossed around in her bed. She remembered the time when he was upset that she wouldn’t come to that one group lunch. He didn’t cheer up until she made it to the lunch (in the last ten minutes). That time she was sick... he would call her multiple times a day to make sure she was taking care of herself.
And that time... that other time too....
To top all of that... everytime he looked at her, he smiled – always smiled like she was the best thing he ever saw in the world.
“It couldn’t be....” She sat in her bed before crashing back into it. “I’m not... crazy, right?”
She felt the blood rush to her cheeks. She sat up again and slapped herself. She reminded herself not to read too many romance novels and comics. She also decided not to read too much into things because there was no way it could happen...
There was no way Yan loved her... not in that way.
Rather, she wished that wasn’t the case....
