As if every glance carries a burden, I sense a profound weight all over me. My cheeks burn with heat as I attempt to maintain a neutral expression. Inhaling the humid summer air, I suppress a groan as I try to shift. All I wanted was to retrieve my diary from my bag, but this nauseating pain shot up my spine.
I take a deep breath. It smells warm and slightly of sweat. Why isn't the teacher here yet? A loud laugh reverberates in the quiet classroom. A hearty chuckle follows. Struggling to keep my thin eyebrows from furrowing but my nose scrunches up. Nostrils flaring. With lips pressed so tightly that the tangerine flavor of my lip balm touches my tongue, I take another breath. With minimal movement, I swipe my finger on my phone screen. Blasting music through my earpiece. Now, I just hope I don't hear anyone laughing.
The sun is scorching, and the sky is clear. The sunlight falling on my face is stinging hot. Can the sun ever not show up? And where in the world is Rois? He’s never late! My feet sense immense vibrations as I just sit like a stone. Titans? Ah! Nope.
The stomps are headed towards me... Hurriedly I open my eyes. Light brown eyes, round head full of cocoa brown hair and hollow from inside, lips shaped into a wild grin. Exact two pairs of everything. As if one wasn’t enough our class was blessed with two.
Dashing in a frantic rush, a slightly shorter guy than the other. His name is Xion, I suppose. He knocks over a table and, unfazed, he gets up. I think Xion and embarrassment, the two of them never met. He darts towards the end of the class, towards my seat. The second clown, Leon, roars and charges towards him. I try not to glare as I look at them. Would it kill these two noisy troublemakers to take a day off from causing trouble?
From my muted view, I deduce that Xion’s mouth is stretched to his ears because he’s screaming. Leon’s slender fingers are about to land on the fabric of Xion’s shirt. In one swift motion, Xion trips over his own feet and slams his face hard on the table. The sudden halt in Xion’s motion disrupts Leon’s pace too, and before he can let go of Xion’s shirt and move away, he slams against the fallen Xion with full force. They stay like that on my table for a while. Their unbearable faces right in front of me. Pulling out the heaviest book from my bag, I smack it on their heads for being so obnoxious. I smack again and again until I see the bright red blood oozing out of their noses and hear their pained cries and sniffles. They had it coming for so long ago.
Gently, the earpiece slid out of my ear, and a warm finger lightly brushed against my ear. Feeling repulsed by his actions I glare at Leon. If only I could react the same way in reality and hit them.
"Are you free this weekend?" Leon asked with a smirk, speaking in the softest and smallest voice.
"Why? Do you need help solving your numerical?" I responded in the calmest voice I could manage.
Neither of them moved from my desk, with Leon's smirk only widening.
"Care to explain why you two are still here?" I demanded, raising my eyebrows and audibly sighing. Every pair of ears in the class now focused on hearing the conversation.
"Would you like me to whisper in your ear or say it out loud?" he wiggled his left eyebrow and showcased his teeth in a wide grin.
Is this his source of amusement, or is he just this dull-witted?
"Please get off of my desk at once"
You can't hit him, Tanaka. You can't hit him. Relax. It's no big deal.
“Wouldn’t you even ask if I am hurt? After all, it’s your fault-”, he pouts.
"My fault?” I take the deepest breath, trying to calm myself “Get off of my desk. I won’t repeat myself” My hands tingle, urging me to pull his hair, drag his face forward, grab his chin, and yell at him but it is still morning and I do not have that kind of energy.
Everyone is eavesdropping and fully invested, if I were to grab his collar and thrust him to the table and knock him out hard, that would add to the plot for sure but…
Flapping his hand as if disappointed he begins "You looked so adorable that it was distracting and I crashed"
I stop leaning against the chair’s backside and uncross my arms “What. Is. your. problem?”
"Falling. Maybe," the two words leave his lips, and he tilts his head ever so slightly, looking at me.
Oooh.
oh! I am gonna hit him.
I am gonna hit him for real.
No. no. Breath. Breath. Breath.
Gawking at his nerves I tell myself to breathe. I can not hit him especially when there are this many eyes on us. He probably goes saying this stuff to every girl and I just have to deal with it without hitting.
"Yeah, keep busy flirting like that," a voice came from somewhere under Leon.
Leon jerks and he savagely gets off the table.
"I forgot that you were here too, honestly” I comment at the sight of Xion pasted on my desk.
"And I thought that was Jesus," cackling, Leon adds, clutching his stomach. "I-I thought Jesus was war-warning me!" he manages to say through peals of laughter. Other idiots in the class start laughing too.
Lightening up my tie a little bit I relax back in my chair and look at their obnoxious sights. Leon is standing beside me and bent over, a hand on his stomach. Xion slowly got up from that position and fledge sitting on my desk and in the background, others were joining in on their laughter amused of course.
Xion brings his hand to his mouth, and I hear loud crunches followed by Leon’s screams that pierce through my ear.
"You jerk, you ate my chocolate with the wrapper?" Leon cried. His jaw protruded, and his arms flailing.
"Nah, took it off when you were busy being all cringe," smiling, Xion says matter-of-factly and jumps off my table.
Yes, things are heating up. They will soon be at each other's throats and pulling out hair. A long-awaited sight to behold.
“Now you wait and watch,” he hissed, clenching his jaw as he strode to their seat. Xion waited and watched, just as the other clown had told him to. Neither I nor Xion was expecting it, and we both yelped as he flung Xion's bag out of the window. The whole class gasped. Hurriedly, Xion ran and checked outside the window.
“What if they get messed up, you dummy?” looking him dead in the eye, Xion said grimly and marched out of the class. His stomps echo in the silent corridor. Like a moron, Leon dashed out behind him.
Some bring happiness wherever they go, and some whenever they go. I take the deepest breath. Ah, it’s finally quiet again. Hard to believe, but even after all this chaos, no teacher showed up. I yank the diary out of my bag.
Where the heck is Rois?
The door of the class slams open. The duo? Back this quickly? No, it's not them, I almost sigh aloud. It's the uniform inspector! Widely known as the 'Bumble bee'. Could the day go any worse?
This woman delights in torturing our eardrums with her high-pitched and nasal voice. I just hope she doesn’t ask me to take off the blazer, claiming it’s too hot. I haven't ironed my shirt, and why does it bother her anyway?
Bumble bee carried her bony and tall body inside calmly and stood near the dice, leaning on it she scrutinized every single girl with her scanner gaze, and when her gaze finally lifted from Eva, it fell on me. Quickly, I diverted my eyes.
She takes that scrutinizing gaze moment to show us how greatly saddened she is by our irresponsible behavior regarding the school’s image. I don’t hate her, but I feel like kicking, smacking, bending, chopping, crushing, burning her, and not just murdering her.
Some time ago when I cut my hair, it bothered her so much, and she made it a habit to carefully spit ironic phrases directed only towards me. In those moments, everyone would stare at me, and I would become the center of attention. I would sit there breathing deeply and calming myself, unable to do anything else.
At the moment she's inhaling deeply, and that means she is about to start yelling in her pitchy voice. Hurriedly, I blast the volume of music in my earpiece. Before she shrieked, the class door slammed open, and cackling the one who named her bumble bee dashed in. He only caught sight of the tall, bony figure and immediately stopped breathing in the doorway, causing Leon to freeze outside and out of her sight. Xion stood motionless as if he had seen something otherworldly.
The others couldn't see Leon, but I could, thanks to my seat at the very end. I witnessed Leon close his dark brown eyes, furrow his eyebrows, and take a deep breath. One could tell that a tough decision had been made at that moment.
Leon grabbed Xion's collar and swiftly pulled him out of her view. In an instant, they disappeared, and even I couldn't see them anymore. In the classroom, Bumble Bee let out a loud shriek, "XIONN!!!"
"Ah, not again, guys! Come back! .. ha. Ha.. right … now," came Rois' exhausted voice. So he had been busy searching for them. "Guys! I..ha..just found you.." Rois' breathless voice came again.
Panting like an old man who had just climbed stairs, Rois dragged his feet and stood defeated in the doorway. He looked at Bumble Bee for permission to enter, and she nodded. For a moment, this woman stood motionless in our classroom, unable to comprehend what had just occurred. She didn't say anything more and simply left the class.
