“Once upon a time, in a faraway place… yeah, I can't even believe myself with that one. This story is not a fairytale in fact this is the opposite of a fairytale. Well, I guess I should tell you why. It all started about a year ago in Ann Arbor, where I used to live with my mom, dad, and little brother.”
It was a chilly autumn day around 7 A.M. and the town of Ann Harbor was still waking up. All the birds were quite getting ready to start looking for food, all the squirrels were finishing the foraging for winter, and the people were turning off their alarm clocks to start their day. Some people got out of bed just to feed their pets but the rest went to get ready or make a cup of coffee, the kids as usual haven't gotten out of bed yet as their drowsiness had caused their eyes to fail to open all the way. As for me, I was already up making breakfast for my little brother and prepping the coffee for my parents. My dad was a real estate agent and my mom was a mechanic. Fun combination right? After finishing making the eggs I went to finish waking up my little brother, Max. His room was a light shade of blue with a dark blue stripe going through the middle of the wall. When I got there he was already up, with our father sitting next to him on the bed. I found this odd as my dad had never done that to him before nor has he done that for me, he was never the one to wake us up or do much for us. Looking back I'm pretty sure he didn't care much for us.
After breakfast, I drove Max to school and walked him in. The night before we got a call saying that the principal wanted to meet with my parents, but, as usual, my dad didn't care and my mom works graveyard shifts, so I had to go. I went in with Max and walked him to his class hugging him goodbye and letting him know that I would be picking him up. He ran into his class, pulling me with him. He was so excited to show me off to his friends as he thought I was the coolest person. He first brought me to his friends, overly sharing how much he loves hanging out with me and the adventures we take.
Not long after the school bell rang signifying the start of school. I bent down to his level telling him that I had to go. He got sad and tried to convince me to stay, but I told him that I have to go talk with the principal and that I would be back for him soon enough.
I got to the school's office and talked to the receptionist and he told me to take a seat and the principal would be right out. What a big load of crap that was. Thirty minutes later the principal came and got me and escorted me to her office. She first started out by asking me if my parents are coming and I explained to her why they wouldn't be. She nodded her head and jumped right into why I was here.
“ Well, it seems Max is having a little trouble in class. For the past few weeks, he has been lashing out at others and refusing to do his work, and when the teacher confronts him he shuts down and won't talk. Would you know why he is doing this?”
I looked at her for a moment, shocked that Max was doing this. I thought of reasons why he would be acting this way and I don't know why it took me so long, I guess I was afraid to think of it.
