May 01, 2022

The sun slowly rose in the cold abandoned apartment which was scheduled for demolition.

An alarm was ringing at 5:00am, trying to wake up its owner.

The sound was coming from the cold apartment, a chair was put behind the door in a bending angle acting as a lock.

The apartment was quite big yet there was no one except a bunch of homeless orphans living inside.

In the living room, a child with long brown hair and a pair of mesmerizing hazel eyes could be seen lying on a dirty old mattress.

The mattress was covered in every kind of filth a person can think of.

Nails, soil, fallen hairs, snot and even blood.

The child let out an unpleased growl, it was clear that he was not positive about waking up. But he woke up anyways.

"Ugh" the child grunted after tapping the alarm clock once to silence it.

A body full of scars and hands full of sinuses revealed itself from underneath the blanket as the child slowly rose from his bed.

A teen seemingly around 15-16 slowly stood up from his bed and headed towards the bathroom.

Since the water was cut off, he couldn't even take a shower to clean himself. After staring at the mirror for a few minutes he grabbed his dirty toothbrush, a half empty bottle of water left from yesterday's work and used it along to brush his teeth. When he finished brushing, he gulped down the rest of water in the half empty bottle. Then he grabbed his work clothes from the ground and put them on as he left the abandoned apartment.

The child headed towards north-west where he worked in a construction site.

Dozens of signs saying 'Caution' and 'Work In Progress' appeared after a 15 minute long walk.

The child entered the construction site from a backdoor since he worked there illegally as he wasn't over 18.

He was allowed to work there since underage workers were forced to work in low-wage jobs as they had the risk of being reported and forced to quit their jobs. The big companies had nothing to lose in this deal. They could just bribe the authorities a bit and everything would be quickly solved.

As he entered the site, the child checked in and headed towards a half-done apartment.

He wore his working clothes then swiftly went into a shabby hut and came out with packages of cement on his hands and back.

After getting the packages, he then headed towards the half-done apartment. Just as he went in, a man shouted behind his back.

"ay Kid."

"Quit yelling everytime you see me." the child replied with a fed-up tone.

"Heh, I can't help it since you're my only friend here." the man said.

"Who's your friend?"

"You, obviously."

"Since when?"

"A week or so."

"Sure thing, now quit playing around and help me carry the packages to the 4th floor." the child said.

The man was in the same boots as the child, trash life and trash opportunities. Though there were many people going through the same thing as them, the man was intrigued by the child as he always isolated himself from others and didn't show much emotion no matter the situation.

As they were climbing the stairs, the man asked "hey kid, do you enjoy life?"

The child replied, "what do you think?" then he asked, "does it look like I'm enjoying life right now?"

"Not really, I'd say that you're cursing it more than enjoying it."

"Wow, so you can observe instead of just yelling around." the child mocked.

"Well yeah, but you don't have to come at me for that. I'd rather call myself hyperactive."

"You're too old to be called that."

"You little..!" the man yelled again.

The man was around his 20s, he had green eyes and black hair. Unusual for someone his age, there was a sprinkle of white on his hair which caused him to look older than his peers.

"Alright, stop yelling. We have to get this thing done till sunset or the manager is going to skin us alive." said the child.

"I know but let's have a bet." the man said.

"A bet?"

"Yeah, the one that carries the least amount of packages till sunset owes a meal to the winner."

"Alright, don't come crying to me when you lose though" flames of determination burned in the child's eyes.

"Same goes for you too." the man smiled.

...

After the bet, the child was holding his stomach and panting heavily while lying on the dusty ground.

On the other side, the man was in a far better state than he was. While the child was lying on the ground, the man posed with a pretentious look on his face and said "Hah, did you really think that you could win against me? I may look old but not old as you think."

"Don't forget about our bet." the man continued.

"I sure won't, but you will have to wait for my next paycheck. If by that time both of us are alive, I will treat you to a nice meal." the child said.

"You a medium? You talk as if you're gonna die soon." the man questioned.

"Hey now, don't jinx it. I still have much to enjoy."

"Yeah yeah, let's leave, I'm too tired." the man said.

"Same." the child replied, smiling.

At this time, both of them weren't aware that the man's premonition would come true"
