Charlie sluggishly pushed himself through the big glass door at the back of the school, cautiously fiddling with his backpack straps. He silently trudged up the stairs, head low, keeping his eyes on people's feet to make sure he didn't run into anyone like the dumbass he is.
It's the first day back after Christmas break in his junior year of high school. Everyone was excitedly huddling in their friend groups, chattering and bickering in unnecessarily loud volumes. As if they hadn't all been hanging out all of break, he thought bitterly.
As the one kid in the whole school who is too shy to even read two words out of a textbook when called on without freezing up and having a panic attack, he obviously didn't have the social skills to have any friends. Or even acquaintances. He has a unique ability to be completely invisible in any and all situations.
"Ew look, its Little Miss Man!"
Charlie froze. He shakily crept forward, trying to stop his vision from blurring up with tears, but failing miserably. He forgot: he is invisible to everyone except for Stella Handley, the class beauty and gossip girl.
Stella is a picture-perfect, straight out of Mean Girls type of girl. If you look up 'classic popular mean girl' she'd be there. She had this bad habit of making his life a living hell. On many occasions he had been pushed forcefully into extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing situations.
Stella stalked up to him and roughly grabbed his arm, digging her ridiculously long nails into his flesh. With a yelp, he tried to get out of her tight grasp, but it was no use. Stella's massive group of friends swarmed around him, leading him to the restrooms.
Not again. He knew what was coming, already squirming with discomfort and trying desperately to claw his way out of the mob of Barbie-impersonators. Damn you, weak arms! He felt panic fill his lungs, making it harder and harder to breathe until he was completely petrified.
They suddenly slammed to a stop, almost becoming human dominoes. After face-planting into Stella's back, he looked up to see what made a cult of vsco girls who never shut up to lower their volume to hushed tones.
Jack Evers. Makes sense. He's only the most popular guy in the whole entire school, that every girl had a crush on. Charlie was instantly shoved away, with a low hiss from Stella on how she would get back to him later.
Charlie never really got what made everyone love him. I mean yes, he had golden-blond hair, bright green eyes, tan skin, and freckles splashed on his face, which is the basic combination that girls like Stella like in a guy. He is really smart, and is in all of the AP classes for every little thing, and super polite and known for being kind. At least, according to all the rumors floating around that is. Charlie never talked to Jack, despite sharing multiple classes with him.
Although right now, he was about to cry with relief with how thankful he was for Jack's presence right by the restrooms right then. He quickly scurried away, almost running into someone's open locker in the process. He also tried his best to ignore the snickers coming from their group, but caved in just in time to turn around and see Stella mouth the word 'faggot' and the whole group erupting in laughter.
Charlie sighed. It wasn't like he wasn't used to this sort of treatment. But despite it being normal, he couldn't help but feel like he was going to throw up.
