Beep! Beep! The alarm goes, continuously sounding. “Alright!” “Alright!” Lyra groaned as she hit the alarm clock and checked the time. “Shit!” she shouted, “I’m late for the interview”, she ran through the house, grabbing a silk white blouse and slinging it over her gray laced bra. While putting on a red corduroy skirt with black boots, rushing out the door. She makes it to the bus stop, barely breathing and wobbling, standing next to the morning crowd. Amid the crowd, there is Mrs. Bilton the bus driver, an older pale skinned woman, with a beautiful ocean colored dress, and shiny gold earrings. Mrs. Bilton drove the bus all day and all night, from 6am to 8pm, Monday through Friday, and she was roughly 60 years old. “Morning Lyra, I’m surprised to see you up this early” Mrs. Bilton declared. “Morning Mrs. Bilton, I have a job interview, and I’m running late” Lyra stated. “I see, well I’ll get you there in no time”. “Thanks” Lyra smiled. Lyra has been riding the bus since she was ten, due to her mom dealing with her dads’ amnesia. Now 11 years later, she’s still riding the bus with Mrs. Bilton as her bus driver. “Next stop is bridire lane” Mrs. Bilton said hoarsely over the intercom. “This is your chance to make your parents proud, you are amazing, you can do this you, Ow!” She exclaimed, as she hit her head on the bus window, Mrs. Bilton was known for her heavy breaking. “Bye Mrs. Bilton, Hope for the best”. “I will dear” she smiled as the bus door closes. Lyra checks her phone and sees that she is three minutes early, “Yes I’m not late” she says excitingly. She walks up to this two-floor brick building, with glistering glass windows, and a big neon sign that says, “Jamaica Be Irie”. She walks in and is flabbergasted at how huge it looks compared to the outside. With Marble floors, as many wooden tables as the eyes can see, and beautiful pictures from Jamaica. She notices a beautiful young woman, with semi-long curly chocolate colored hair, her expression was warm and adorable like a child, her figure was like a runner’s body toned and fit. “Hi” the beautiful woman spoke softly, “how may I help you”. “Hi, I’m here for an Interview”, “What’s your name?” The beautiful woman whispered, “My name is Lyra Wright”. “Ok, Ms. Wright, The manager will be with you in a few minutes.” “Thank you” Lyra sighed. About ten minutes later, a tall fair skin woman with short straight red hair, wearing an emerald skintight dress and black heels. “Ms. Wright?” The fair woman stated, “Yes” Lyra exclaimed. “Good, you may come with me”. She leads Lyra to a room upstairs that’s very spacious and has a desk and group of chairs covering about one third of the room, with wooden floors so shiny you could eat off them Lyra thought to herself. “Alright, have a seat here.” The fair woman says, “Your resume looks good, plenty of volunteering, and a bachelor’s degree in management,” she continues “I noticed that the last job you worked at was for a farmers market for two years, Is that right?” “Yes!” Lyra declared “It was one of my favorite jobs to work, all the people were like family to me”, “Why’d you leave, assuming that you quit?” “I did not, I got fired, Because of an incident with my ex coworker” The fair woman’s countenance changed from a welcoming smile to a unnerving frown, “Continue” she declared, Lyra sighs “He liked me and asked me out, but I didn’t like him so I rejected him and so he started spreading rumors about me and saying I yelled at customers and I actually hit one, then my boss got word of these rumors and he had to let me go.” The fair woman’s countenance stayed with a frown, and she let out a big sigh and asked me my last question, “Why do you want to work here?” “Because of my childhood, when I was younger me and my family used to eat here all the time before my dad.... umm anyway, we loved coming here and the waitresses were always so cool to me, walking around with so many dishes and not dropping them, so I want to contribute to making people feel how I felt every time I came here”. “Well thank you for coming Ms. Wright, I’ll call you and let you know what we decide, have a great rest of your day.” “Thank you, You too”. As Lyra approached the front door, she notices that the beautiful woman is talking with a customer, and another customer is standing by the front door waiting to walk in, a weary looking, gray colored woman with one kid on her hip, she yells “Thank you!” as Lyra holds the door for her. “No problem, First time?” “Yea, do you recommend anything?” the gray colored woman asks, “I recommend the ox tail with rice and peas” Lyra answered, “It goes great with cola champagne.” “Thank you very much” the gray colored woman smiled. “No problem!” Lyra hails a taxi, and gets in. The taxi smells like cigarettes and cough medicine, the driver has a scruffy look, and black and white fedora, with a gray cotton shirt. “Where to” asked the taxi driver. “The Rose hospital, please” Lyra states. “Yes, ma’am” says the taxi driver. “So how long have you been living here” continues the taxi driver. “Sir I’ve been here my whole life” Lyra response. “Oh really, I’ve lived here almost ten years now.” “It’s not too bad down here”. Answered Lyra. “We’re here” says the taxi driver. “Thank you “! Lyra yells as she pays him, “have a good day”. “You too”! yells the taxi driver before speeding out of the parking lot. Lyra enters the hospital and sees Mr. smith, a caramel-colored man, with chiseled features, and a slender figure. “Hey Lyra, how are you doing?” asks Dr Smith. “Hi Dr Smith, I’m good, how are you”. Says Lyra. “Pretty good, the wife wants another kid”. Continues Dr Smith”. “That’s great! I’m so happy for you, Sheila is a great mom”. Declared Lyra. “Thank you, I’m excited and concerned all at once, I mean we already have four kids” stated Dr. Smith, “True, but you will have more help around the house, and children are great”. Explained Lyra. “That’s true, oh we’re here, it was nice seeing you Lyra”. Says Dr Smith. “You too”. Responded Lyra, she takes a deep breath before opening the door. She walks into a room almost too familiar, with flower paintings on the wall, the smell of sand and hand sanitizer, the night stand next to the bed holding medicine and oatmeal untouched. A long hospital bed with a window, seeing that she was on the 5th floor of the building. “Hi Dad, how are you feeling?” Lyra uttered. “Hi dear I’m fine”. How’s your day?” asked her dad. Now her dad was a slender and tall man, so long that he could barely fit in his bed, with eyes piercing and calming at the same time. His voice was almost raspy and wavering. “It was good I went to my interview for Jamaica Be Irie”. “The restaurant we used to go to when I was little”. Stated Lyra. “Oh, I don’t remember, but that’s good right? Did you get the job?” Asked her father. “She told me to wait for her call”. Stated Lyra. “I’m rooting for you my little Fiore!” Her father said (Fiore means flower in Italian). “Thanks dad”. Lyra says softly. “I brought you something to eat dad” “asks Lyra, “I knew I smelled something good”, Responded her dad. “Do you want it now”, “yes please.” Nighttime started to fall, and visiting hours ended, Lyra said bye to her dad and hailed a taxi to her house. Her house was a nice, amethyst color, with windows and wooden frames, and carpeted floors with a beautiful dining room, but every time she comes home it always feels a little empty because her dad isn’t there. She suddenly smells a sweet aroma coming from the kitchen, so mesmerizing you could see the scent in the air. It was her mother baking cannoli’s, her favorite dessert. Her mother was a short olive colored woman with black straight hair so long she almost steps on it when she walks. She had a very deep and smooth voice, with baby blue eyes. “Hello sweetie how was the interview?” her mom asked, “It was good, I think.” “That’s good!” she said excitedly, then she sighed so deeply that it made my skin crawl. “How’s your dad? I checked on him earlier” She whispered, “He’s ok, I went to visit him after the interview, I brought him takeout from Jamaica be Irie”. Her mom smiled, “I’m sure he loved that.” “Yea he-, Lyra was interrupted by her phone ringing, and it was an unknown number. “Hello?” Lyra shakingly asked, “Hi, Ms. Wright?” The strange but familiar voice said, “this is she,” “good, I’m calling about the waitress job you applied for” The familiar voice said, “You got the job! Be here at 8am tomorrow to start your training, congratulations.” “Thank you!” Lyra said ecstatically before hanging up the phone. “You got the job?!” her mom asked, “I did!” Lyra yelled, “Congrats!” her mom yelled as she hugged Lyra. “Thank you.”
