Miguel took a deep breath in and crossed his fingers and hoped to find what he was looking for. He opened the small metal mailbox door and gazed upon what he had been so looking forward to seeing, he laughed at the sheer joy that came to him as soon as he saw that little dark green envelope. 

He didn’t stop chuckling as he jumped over the two stairs leading to his front door. He wasted no time in jogging to his room with a stupid grin on his face, he pushed open his door and kicked it close behind him as he half jumped, half slid on to his bed. He tore open the envelope and opened the letter he had been waiting for over a three days, and though that would not sound like torture to anyone except Miguel he was distraught if he did not get a letter from his pen pal, who he had been exchanging letters with since 6th grade. Also like, reply faster. 

Miguel barely remembered how it had started, he had gotten an address from another school’s 6th-grade class, to write to their sister school. He dove into the letter and read: 

‘Dear Magnolia,

‘It seems weird that we will be starting our Junior year on Monday. I still can’t shake the feeling that I just got handed a random address and said, “Oh hey write a letter to this person saying blah blah blah blah blah oh any pick a tree as a name . _ .” I am so glad that that assignment lead to this friendship.’

Miguel winced at the word friendship, he didn’t tend to imagine kissing his other friends this much.

‘It has been 5 mother flipping years, I can’t help but wonder if we will ever get to meet face to face while knowing that we are meeting as pen pals and not just peers. I bet you would be taller cause I am so STUPIDLY short!!!

‘I guess you it’d be weird to imagine that because we have never seen each other which is so incredibly stupid I wish when I think of you I could think of you, you, not some dumb tree. :(’

Miguel smiled, at least he was not the only one who wanted more even if he thought Elm would never want to the same type of relationship Miguel yearned for. 

‘Anyway I just wanted to wish you the best of luck on your first day and I will see you there! Though you may not know it’s me, my high school closed due to lack of funding I thought you should know…
