POV Brandon [Friday night]

Brandon knelt two feet from Lex's desk, spine arched, chest raised, hands folded at the small of his back. The gold collar sat snug against his throat. The delicate body chains caught the low light with each shallow exhale—a constellation of glints mapping the geography of a body that no longer felt like his own.

The beating had been clinical. Corrective. Lex had explained every stroke with the patience of a surgeon narrating an amputation. Disappoint me in front of my investors. Know your place.

Brandon had not screamed. He'd learned years ago that screaming only made it worse—made it last longer, made Lex's scent spike with something that wasn't quite arousal and wasn't quite rage but lived in the terrible space between. So he'd counted. Bitten the inside of his cheek until copper flooded his tongue. Folded himself into the darkest corner behind his ribs and waited for the flame to burn itself out.

The swelling on his cheek was going down and the split lip had sealed. He'd been taken from the holding room, cleaned up, and sent to Lex, again. Now he knelt.

The office smelled of cedar smoke, cold iron, and something metallic beneath—Lex's scent, woven into the very walls. But beneath it, a fainter note: floral, hollow, compliant. Brandon's own scent.

Lex moved, a whisper of wool and the clink of a decanter. He didn't speak yet. The cedar-iron scent thickened, patient and absolute. A thumbprint of condensation on the whiskey glass. The soft shift of leather as he settled into his chair.

Brandon held the Presentation. Knees aching on the cold marble.

Good boy. Still. Survive.

The knock came, two raps, and the door swung open at Lex's approval.

Marcus and Joey hauled Alex between them, his heels dragging, his yellow-blonde hair a wild tangle. Citrus and lemons flooded the office—but soured now, sharp with fury and adrenaline. Alex twisted, spat, hissed through clenched teeth. "Get your hands off me—"

Lex set down his whiskey. "Release him."

The Betas hesitated. Joey's grip slackened first. Marcus followed. Alex stumbled forward, caught his balance, took a quick glance around—and lunged, straight at Lex.

The cane came from nowhere. A blur of polished wood that cracked across Alex's shoulder with a sound like splitting ice.

Thwak.

Alex hit the rug, a choked cry tearing from his throat.

Brandon didn't move. The chains whispered against his skin as his breath stuttered.

"Leave us," Lex said, and Marcus and Joey retreated, the door clicking shut behind them.

Alex lay crumpled, gasping, one hand clamped over the blooming bruise. Tears streaked through the defiance on his face.

Brandon watched. Kneeling. Still. The moth behind his ribs beat its wings once, twice—and went quiet.

The silence breathed. The cane was placed against the desk. Lex crossed to the dark wood sideboard, to a thing Brandon had never seen.

It stood on a pedestal base like a candelabra, an ornate rectangular display that caught the low light and swallowed it. Black metal swirled in intricate gothic tracery—arches, finials, spires—framing thin glass panes on every side. It looked heavy and delicate at once, a cathedral shrunk to the size of a reliquary. Inside, burgundy velvet lined the shelves, deep and plush, and tucked into custom recesses sat rows of glass vials. The velvet cradled them like something sacred.

Brandon's stomach dropped. He knew without being told exactly what those were.

"You see your defiance as strength." Lex's voice carried no heat. Surgical. Reverent. "I see it as uncalibrated potential. Raw material waiting for refinement."

He touched the lower shelf where the vials looked cloudy, crude. "My earliest work. Inelegant. The Omegas fought—until they didn't. Their recipe left a bitter residue in the final product. Unusable for any application."

Alex, on the floor, went still.

Brandon's breath caught in his throat, chains trembling against his sternum.

His hand traveled higher. Vials clearer now, pale as morning honey. "I learned. Fear is not the goal. Submission isn't breaking—it's molding. Every Omega has a temperature at which they become pliable. Not shattered. Polished."

Lex's fingers stopped at the top shelf. A single vial. Honey-gold, luminous, catching light like liquid amber. He lifted it with the tenderness of a priest handling a relic.

"Brandon Day." He turned, letting the vial catch the light. "Fourteen years old when I acquired him. Already marked as greatness."

His dark eyes flicked to Alex—then, with terrible softness, to Brandon. "The white streak at his temple. Do you know what that means? In certain bloodlines, it signals a genetic variant. A pheromone signature so pure it's-."

Lex set the vial back with reverent precision. "—irreplaceable."

A small, ragged gasp slipped past Brandon's lips before he could stop it.

The whisper of sound hung in the office like a moth frozen mid-flight.

His white streak. Lex had never—not once, not in all the years of extractions and corrections and you are my finest work—spoken about the streak like it meant something beyond a quirk of pigment. Nana had shaved it. Hide it. Dangerous to be special. And Brandon had believed, in the bruised marrow of him, that it marked him as wrong. Broken. A defect to be concealed.

But Lex had called it a genetic variant. Had spoken of bloodlines and purity like the streak was—

He couldn't finish the thought. It splintered, scattering into the darker corners behind his ribs where dangerous things lived.

Don't ask. Don't react. Survive.

"Years," Lex murmured, turning from the display. "Years of careful adjustment. Not breaking. Perfecting. He kneels because he understands what I have made of him. A masterpiece, not a martyr."

Lex steps toward Alex, close enough that his cedar-and-iron scent presses against Alex's throat.

"You, on the other hand, are still fighting. Still leaking that sour, defiant stench." He tilts his head. "But you're smart. You come from good stock. An Omega pursuing a Master's in Computer Science—that's rare. That's valuable." His hand lifts, almost gently, and brushes Alex's sweat-damp hair from his forehead. "I don't think it will take me years to perfect you. You will learn fast. You'll see."

Alex's gaze rose from the rug. Not fear. Not submission. Pure, distilled hatred burned behind those brown eyes, jaw set like a blade. His scent curdled—citrus gone septic, promise of violence without the means to deliver it.

"On your knees." Lex's voice held no anger. Just command. Cool. Patient.

Alex's arms trembled but rose—shaking, gasping—onto his knees.

"Hands behind your back."

A hesitation. Defiance flickering in those brown eyes, wild and bright. Lex's palm connected with Alex's cheek—not the cane now, just flesh, but sharp enough to snap Alex's head sideways. A backhand, almost casual.

Brandon knew that blow. Remembered the copper bloom across his own tongue, the way the world tilted and righted itself wrong.

Alex's hands locked behind his back.

"Good boy."

The word landed like a stone in still water. Brandon watched Alex's shoulders soften—an inch, no more. The body's betrayal. How even a monster's praise could feel like shelter when the alternative was pain.

Lex's hand settled on Alex's crown. Not gripping. Resting. The weight of it pressed Alex's chin lower, arched his spine into the proper curve.

"See?" Lex's gaze cut to Brandon. "You are already learning."

The knock splintered the stillness—three sharp raps that made Alex flinch.

Joey's muffled voice: "Sir. There's an issues downstairs."

Lex's expression remained smooth as still water. Only his scent betrayed him—he didn't like being interrupted during sessions.

"We'll resume when I return." Straightened his cuffs with precise, unhurried movements.

His dark gaze moved between them—the predator cataloging his prey, measuring their stillness, finding it satisfactory.

"Stay."

The door swung shut. The latch engaged.

Brandon started counting. It was best to lose yourself in the numbers. His chains shivered with each breath, counting beneath the silence.

four, five, six

Beside him, Alex's citrus burned sharp with fury, teeth grinding behind pressed lips.

eleven, twelve, thirteen

Rage had its own scent. Brandon knew it. Alex wore it like armor not realizing it would eventually crack.
