Two pairs of small hands gripped tightly to coarse fur. Trees flew by as twin girls rodes wolves, one male and the other female who were twice the size of normal wolves, through the forest into the fading night. As the sun set, the temperature began to drop in the early autumn evening. Changing leaves, whose color was meant to be marveled at, are missed in the desperate rush of the small group through the forest. With a sharp turn, one of the little girls squealed as her cold hands lost her grip and fell off the female wolf.
Hearing the squeal, both wolves stopped, running back to the fallen girl’s side. The female wolf nudged the crying girl who was curled up so only the very top of her dark, honey colored hair was visible around her lightly tanned arms and legs as her crimson and rainbow flowing aura wavered softly, shivering as she was under dressed for the evening air in a pair of jean shorts and a purple t-shirt filthy from days of continuous wear. As the male scanned for danger, the other girl, her chocolate colored eyes flashing with worry, slid off his back to run to her sister.
“Don’t cry Kat-Kat” the calm girl soothed as she held the other tightly, her aura matching her sister’s exactly. The girl’s own small body was also dressed as her sister was, only difference in her shirt being aqua instead of purple, and was shivering just as violently as her sister.
“I ca….can’t hold o...on anymore, Ka...Kake” the crying girl stammered out between sobs as she returned her sister’s hold, nuzzling into the other girl’s shoulder, breathing in her sharp lemony scent. Her eyes, a lighter brown than her sister’s, glance at the wolves full of tears of pain and fear, causing the female to lick her cheek soothingly.
Turning the female wolf moved towards the male, her golden pelt shimmering in the patches of moon light filtering through the treetops. Licking her mate’s snout she braced herself just before a crunching-rip of a sound echoed through the woods as her body shifted into her petite human form. Her skin, pink from the shift, showing her European descent. She sighed, crouched down beside the male resting her cheek on his charcoal colored pelt.
Rubbing her head slightly on the male wolf for a moment, the woman then slowly stood to her full five foot two inches, her long hair matching color with the pelt of her wolf form covering some of her nakedness, her aura flowing though the rainbow of colors that showed her Wiccan origins. Surveying the glen around the girls with her stormy grey eyes she began to purposely walk in a wide circle around the girls, whispering softly a chant meant to invoke a blood based shielding barrier to help protect their group using the twins as the focus so to allow her and the male to move about freely. Completing the circle, it flashed brightly with a soft, red light, a fresh breeze rushing gently around the twins, before dimming down to a barely noticeable shimmering that would only allow those bound by blood to the twins to enter.
“We’ll rest for a little while.” the woman declared as she moved to the girls, pulling them to cuddle close to her as she sat with them.
The girls snuggled in closer to her warmth, feeling safer as they filled their young noses with the woman’s lavender scent. She kissed each of their foreheads before nuzzling her face into their matching wind blown hair. Knowing the girls and the woman were safe behind the barrier of the spell, the male wolf swept his amber eyes once more around the immediate area before disappearing into the trees. Sensing the male wolf leaving, the calmer girl pulled away from the embrace, gazing about for him.
Pulling the girl back the woman softly explained, “Rest Kaycee. Daddy is just going to search for something to eat so you both can regain some strength.”
“Wh….why did th….they attack uh...us, mommy” the other girl asked still softly crying, “wha...what did we da….do to them?”
The woman sighed holding her closer to her. “We did nothing to them, Katherine. I can only imagine why they attacked us. If it’s who I think it is, they are attacking out of fear of the unknown. An unknown we somehow represent to them” she soothed.
“Is it cause you use to be a witch?” Kaycee asked, curling tighter into her mother.
Chuckling softly her mother gave her a slight hug, “Wiccan sweetie, not witch. I never stopped being Wiccan. It's only that now I can also be considered Were, since your daddy turned me during the mating process. But yes, you are right. It is likely because my heritage as well as my choosing to accept your daddy’s claim of me being his mate. They may even fear us because I gave birth to the two of you, passing on my Wiccan blood to be mixed with the Were blood from Daddy. Some people refuse to see happiness in others that don’t fit the mold of what they think the world should look like and hate those who choose to live outside of that mold. Even those close to them taking the path of happiness contrary to what they believe it should be, can have them reacting with fear rather than understanding.”
“Will they stop?” Katherine asked wiping away the last of her tears
“What do you mean dear?”
Both girls looked at each other and took a deep breath in sync. Kaycee started as both girls tried to clarify the question together. “The people who...”
“...fear us. Will they….” Katherine continued before Kaycee jumped back in
“.....ever stop trying....”
“...to hurt us?”
“Will they ever…”
“stop being scared and….”
“...let us be happy?”
Hesitating their mother struggled to keep tears from her eyes and voice as she replied, “I don’t know my darlings, I just don’t know,” Hugging them even closer as her gaze swept the area for a sign of her mate’s return, hating that her innocent daughters had their happy worldview shattered so soon.
Sounds of the forest surrounded them. Hooting of owls and the rustle of small creatures through the brush a soothing soundtrack for the weary travelers. It had rained earlier in the day, leaving a fresh mossy scent to the air, the wind stirring it about with the normal scents of the animals and decaying underbrush. Despite not being old enough to shift yet, the girls noses and ears were sensitive enough to pick out and match the individual scents to the sounds of the animals who moved through this area of the forest around them, bringing to them a sense of comfort. Allowing it to console them, the girls curled up closer to their mother in silence, pondering this frightening turn their lives have taken.
The first attack had come two days into their trip to visit their Uncle David, their father’s older brother, who just became Alpha of his pack after defeating their grandfather in an Alpha challenge. Their grandfather had started to show the first symptoms of Rogue Syndrome about the time their father met their mother and claimed her as his mate. The Syndrome had already begun to so corrode the old alpha’s mind that it caused the old man to see his son mating a Wiccan as a threat to his pack. Knowing he couldn’t defeat his father in an Alpha challenge, the girls’ father had abdicated and became a lone wolf to stay with their mother. Together, they were able to be accepted into a new pack where their father was able to become the Beta for Alpha Mason.
That had been ten years ago, five years before the girls had even been born. Uncle David’s pack, having no Omega to counter the progression of Grandfather's Rogue Syndrome, had started to fall apart. It came to a point that the older brother could not stand blindly by any longer, the old Alpha’s mind deteriorating to the point that Uncle David could not trust Grandfather’s judgement or feel compelled to follow the old man’s orders any longer. Uncle David challenged Grandfather for the Alpha position, barely winning through a lucky blow that fatally wounded the old man. A week ago, after assessing how much damage had been created from grandfather’s rouge syndrome symptoms within the pack structure before the challenge, Uncle David knew he would not be able to repair the damage alone and immediately called the girl’s father asking him to return and help rebuild the weakened pack.
They had packed and left the next day with enough clothes to stay a week or two. Daddy felt it would be good for his family to visit together, since he may need to rejoin his original pack as Beta to give that pack the best chance of healing. Unfortunately, strange men had attacked, sending a fireball at the car. Only their mother’s quick shielding spell saved the family from dying when the engine exploded. Closer to their uncle’s pack than their home, the girl’s parents had shifted before urging the girls on to their backs to take off at a run into the surrounding woods. The girls were left with only the clothes on their back to protect them from the changing seasons as the four day trip by car had turned into a week long trek riding through the woods as their parents struggled to avoid the men tracking them as they attempted to reach safety.
