DO NOT COPY MY STUFF AND BE NICE
"Millie hurry up!" Runners, school bag, water bottle, check, check, and check. "I'm gonna leave without you!"
"No, wait. I'm coming, chill." That's what she said, anyway. Matteo is driving me to school. My 2013 Nissan Altima is in the shop because of an engine problem. I don't know what that is but whatever, it's getting fixed where Matteo works.
"You are lucky I tolerate you."
"Yeah well, You're lucky I'm not mean."
"You don't have a mean bone in your little body, Bambina."
"Hey, I told you not to call me that."
"Just get in the car."
"Yes, father dearest." Matteo is grumbling again. But I shouldn't be surprised, it's an everyday occurrence. He is always glaring at someone. I'm glad I don't get glared at by him, it's scary when he's mad. Oh wait, he's always mad, never mind, he is just like a misunderstood pity. All bark and no bite. "Buck up buttercup. I don't want you to crash and die. I doubt your fancy Ford Mustang with red "guts" and in the magnetic metallic color will stop your body from launching through the windshield." The last part I say in a sarcastic tone know-it-all because I had to listen to him talk about this car for like two months after he bought it. Sometimes Matteo will find his little group of friends and just talk about cars all day. I didn't know how he could talk about one subject for hours on end. But if he loves cars I love that for him.
I hear a faint click of a belt buckle after turning out of my neighborhood. I win you little rascal. After the 15-minute ride, he finally parks in the front lot in our not-really-reserved-but-is spot. He says it's faster to leave at the end of the day but I think he gets cold walking any farther in the winter.
Matteo
Bringing Millie to school is amazing, I get to show off my car, and arriving together makes people not like to hit on her because they think we are in a situationship. I wish it were more of a formal boyfriend-girlfriend thing. So, this year for senior prom I'm going to ask her to be my girlfriend and date, I have a few months to plan so it will be perfect.
I always park closer to the entrance so she doesn't freeze her little butt off in the cold. But she doesn't have to know that. I notice everything when it comes to Millie, like the shivers and the rosy cheeks in the winters of Minnesota.
Rushing to the other side of the car I open the door for Millie. My mama and papa taught me how to be a gentleman to those who deserve it and an asshole to those who don't. She always says thank you and waits for me to lock the car, it never fails, she will be standing there patiently till I'm ready to go in.
I like Millie but I hate going to school, you win some and you lose some. We share the first hour of English and the second hour of math class, otherwise, we don't see each other until after the fourth hour. Then we can leave as we have most of our credits done to graduate high school.
My all-time favorite part of the day is when we are in the hallways and she grabs my shirt to weave through people. The worst part is getting paired up with some other girl who isn't Millie. They always try to get something from me, whether it be sex, money, or a date, Millie says they hit on me because I'm a "pretty boy". Being paired with others doesn't affect Millie as much as me, she just gets along with everyone. Even in the halls, she says hi to every person she knows. Which is a lot of people.
The first two hours of my day are amazing, as always. But the second she leaves my sight I am having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. That bitch Drew is a frequent botherer, all he wants to do is get laid. I'm not saying he should never hook up with someone. As long as it isn't Millie, who is his main target most of the time.
By the time the fourth hour comes around, I am so done with school. It sucks, I hate it, and I want Millie. So we meet up to go to the library or a cafe to finish homework and talk. Her Father is the best guy but her mother is super strict with grades so she gets all of her homework done as well and as soon as she can. Around two o'clock she has to go to her cross-country practice. I have no clue how she can handle conditioning as a sport. Maybe because she is on varsity running a 21.14 5k, and a captain. I'm sure she has her reasons.
Millie
I'm finally done with homework for the day, so I go down to the locker room to get my running stuff on after saying bye to Matteo. Voices are echoing down the hallways as I turn the corner and find Drew cornering Kailani, my best friend. She recently moved to Minnesota from British Colombia. Then I hear a smack of a hand against a cheek.
"What the hell Kailani! What was that for!" Oh my goodness she hit him. You go girl, put that boy in his place!
"Well do try to touch me and maybe I won't hit so hard. Watch out next time I'll kick you."
"Yeah leave her alone, " I call out to them.
Drew slowly turns with a smirk on his face. "Aww Millie, what are you gonna do? Where is your bodyguard now? Did he dumped you?"
"No, he didn't, and he will kill you if you do something to me." I'm not lying, Matteo openly hates Drew and could be in jail for the things he wants to do to Drew.
"Millie..." Kailani warns.
He stalks closer, "Oh yeah?"
Suddenly a guy rushes Kailani, holding her back as Drew grabs both of my wrists and pins them to my side. I can finally use the self-defense that Matteo taught me!
"Not so tough now are you?" a greedy grin splits his ugly face.
"Let go of me." With an icy glare in my eyes, I twist my wrists so he loses his hold on me and I launch my knee to his groin. Kailani just dragged the other guy to the ground when he got distracted.
"You were a bitch anyway," Drew grumbles, crumpled on the ground.
"Oh well, at least I'm not past tense, Drew." Kailani laughs as we quickly grab our stuff and go into the locker room to change for practice.
"Girl you are crazy!"
I grab my hair brush and some ponytails to manage my hair. Looking in the mirror I can't help but compare myself as I'm next to other girls with shiny hair, glowing skin, and a perfect body. After getting my hair perfect I throw on a sweatshirt and leggings. Kailani notices and gives me a weird look but I just answer with a smile.
My shoes are on and the team of 18 girls walks outside. The coaches couldn't make it so they sent me the workout, a long run with 20 minutes of group core and stretching afterward. We split into three groups by mileage, 4 miles, 6 miles, and 8 miles. I assign the eldest girl in each group to be responsible for each person running. I'm leading the 8-mile group with 6 other girls. We are the varsity runners for our school. Finally, we split and headed out to the trail.
It is the perfect temperature for a run, just about 50 degrees. About 4 miles through, the girls complain about being overheated in shorts and a long sleeve. I feel a bit hot but it's not too bad. I love long runs, it's like free therapy with your team. The point of a long run is to be able to hold a steady pace and be able to talk consistently without gasping for air. The girls always grill me on what going on with Matteo. Often we just talk about our day, what's going on this weekend, who cheated on who, or any other gossip going around in school.
Just about a mile from school, I get super lightheaded and dizzy. Kailani asks me if I'm feeling okay. She tells me that my face is flushed and I'm blinking rapidly. I start to drop back and some of the other girls notice as well.
"You don't look too good."
"We can stop for a bit."
"Are you feeling okay Millie?"
"Oh my god your face is bright red! You look like a tomato!" Kelly is snickering at me, that brat. No one likes her. But we have to tolerate her as she is the coach's daughter.
"Shut up Kelly, and don't laugh at her." Kailani is the ever-protective bestie.
I need to show my strength to my team, "No I'm fine I just got a little dizzy." suddenly the ground comes flying at my face and I fall on my hands and knees. The whole group gasps.
"Does anyone have a phone? Call an ambulance."
"No, I'm okay," I struggle to get up, "I just need a few seconds." The ground starts to sway again and the path in front of me goes black.
