Plucked Feathers (Birdtale Sans x OC)

Chapter One: Monsters?

Chapter One: Monsters?

May 19, 2022

It was a late Thursday and I'm just coming back from my college. And it was practically pouring out. And of course I forgot my umbrella since I thought it was going to be sunny out.
At least I got to see some, and if not all the residents WALKING or driving to their destination for once. You see, in this world, ancient humans had developed and evolved into those that others would refer to as "angels". But, they were anything but. They just looked the part while some never really took the time to ACT the part. Anyways I'm rambling. I ran to the nearest convenience store that I could run to. I had to pick myself some ready to go meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner since my "father" won't even bother to even cook anything for me, let alone for himself. He's mostly somewhere else getting drunk or whatever. I stopped keeping track of him a long time ago when she…. Nevermind. That's for another time.

I went down the frozen food aisles to get enough for at least three weeks worth of food. Hey a girl's gotta eat and someone has to make sure that "dad" doesn't die of alcohol poisoning. Although I'm very tempted to. But he's all got now.

The cashier sends me a curious glance at all the food. Since this was a small store it looked like I was practically robbing the place. When he caught sight of my golden yellow orbs, he immediately knew who I was. And hurriedly checked out the food and left me to bag them.

'Gee thanks' I sarcastically muttered in my head.

You see, I have a reputation in this small town. I was both hated, feared, and pitied. I was feared mainly because of the fights I had from jerks who made fun of me and my situation and those who were willing to be my friend or actually liked me. For the hated, I was like that because of what happened during highschool. But that's for another time. As for the pitied part, it was because of what happened in highschool that earned me the nickname, "The Wingless". And just like the name refers, I'm grounded. Permanently. I don't have wings. At least, not anymore.

After gathering the groceries, I pulled the hood of my black hoodie tighter as I braced for the onslaught of the pounding rain. Being aware of all the stares and whispers around me as I jogged down the sidewalk, I caught the words, "Freak", "Troublemaker", and the one that irks me the the most, "Murderer". I picked up my speed and eventually the whispers were muffled by the sound of the rain and their judgemental gazes became a blur as I ran home. Or at least the place that I used to call home. By now it was just a husk of the happiness that I used to have. I don't think I'll ever have a place to call that again.

As I got through the front door of the house, I was greeted with the smell of stale alcohol in the air. It almost made me hurl. Good thing I also bought those plug in fresheners.

I went to work to put away the groceries in the fridge and freezer and quickly put those fresheners to work. Never could stand the smell of alcohol. Don't know why even people liked the stuff. Tasted like crap. Don't ask how I know that. The things I did during highschool were a bit… Yeah….

By now I'm in my room changing out of my soaked clothes to put on some pair of sweatpants and a loose white shirt that had printed golden wings on the back where the holes where my supposed wings were to show through. Despite the reminder of my predicament, it was my favorite shirt. It was hers too…

I sighed looking in the mirror in my room. My Choco brown hair looked absolutely horrid and my complexion wasn't doing so good either. I guess I haven't got a lot of sleep lately since Frisk disappeared a week or two ago. You see Frisk was a twelve year old kid that lived in my neighborhood in the orphanage around the corner. She has a pair of sparrow pattern wings, a cheeky and determined attitude, and is mute. She's absolutely adorable and both me and her hit it off immediately when I came to volunteer for service hours for my college classes. Despite the majority of this town practically hating my guts or avoiding me like the plague, the lady that runs the orphanage sympathizes with me and helps me with my situation whenever she can. Ms. Rider, the headmistress, is a very understanding and open minded lady. She even taught Frisk of all the basic education that she knew when she was younger. That also included the basic foundations of ASL. So when I was introduced to Frisk, Ms. Rider asked if I could help her with her education since she was homeschooled and that since the orphanage was busy in it's own rights, she didn't always have the time to help Frisk. So after that, me and Frisk became inseparable. We stuck up for each other, kept each other busy to avoid the dark thoughts, we made each other laugh with our stupid puns….

God I miss her.

After I brush my hair and get something to eat, I'll head out to search for her in the woods again. Apparently that was the last place that she was going to in her note before she went missing. Something about an old legend? I don't know. But one thing is for sure, after I make sure she's alright, I'm going to give her an earful of nagging.

After heating up a frozen meal of meatloaf, I dug right in. As I was eating, I had this nagging feeling to turn on the TV. My gut instincts never failed me yet, so that's what I did. Got up, grabbed the remote, and turned on the TV to the news channel. And I could not believe what I saw. IT WAS FRISK!!! And she was surrounded by….

"Monsters?"

---------------------------------

Sans' POV

"hello, my name is sans, this is frisk. i'll be translating for her." I explained as I shielded the kid from the downpour with my wing. I watched as they signed to me, saying what they were signing to the crowd. "she says: i am the human ambassador of the monsters who wishes to bring an era of peace to the two species." That might be a bit of a challenge, considering the history, but ok. "she wants to have a discussion with the king of monsters and the mayor of ebbot to establish said peace, if the mayor is willing to talk." Way to give my mouth a workout. "questions?"

"So all the legends surrounding the mountain are true?"

"is there a bunch of monsters standing before you?" I wanted to reply back, but I don't think they'd like that very much. So instead I responded with a simple: "yes."

"How did your kind survive down there so long?" There was something in that reporter's tone I didn't like. I pushed it away for now. "same way humans survived on the surface, we evolved."

"Go back to where you came from!" There we go. There's the hate I was expecting. "nah. frisk says that you should be more open minded, monsters aren't bad." That guy looked offended. Maybe I shouldn't have repeated that one. "What will you do now that you're free?" That human sounded more curious than threatening. That was a good sign. "live our lives in peace is the goal." Some more hate was thrown our way and someone threw an orange at Frisk, which I blocked. "that's all for today kiddo, they're getting restless." Aggressive was more like it, but we were already on thin ice and we only just got here. They signed one more thing to me as we retreated to the mountain for now. "you want me to what?"

--------------------------------
Frisk's POV

*Please? She's a great friend of mine and I won't be able to leave anytime soon while working on a peace treaty.* I signed to Sans. "why me?" He asked. *Because I trust you to protect her the most.. you also happen to be the best at sneaking around undetected.* I concluded, crossing my arms afterwards. "she's important to ya, huh?" I nodded. *She's like the sister I never had.* He sighed heavily. "fine, i'll do it.. what's her name and appearance so i know who i'm keeping an eye on?" I grinned widely and signed too fast for Sans to translate, due to my growing excitement. "woah, woah, what? slow down kiddo! i can't read that fast!" I rubbed the back of my neck, grinning sheepishly. *Sorry. I said she has chocolate brown hair and golden yellow eyes.* He nodded. "ok, name?"
