King Anthony wants to retire soon, but he can't until his son, Raylan, is married. Prince Ray can't receive the title of crown prince until he's chosen a spouse. Despite the king's best efforts, Ray hasn't found a lady of noble birth that he deems suitable in the last five years. To appease his wife, Queen Sara, who also wants to retire, King Anthony plans one last ball before he will consider an arranged marriage for his son.
Ray is tired of attending royal functions with the instructions to find a spouse. He knows he has to marry soon so he can ascend the throne, but he does not want to spend a life with someone who only cares about his status. He's met women who range everywhere from silly to wise beyond their years, yet every single one of them has cared about his title first, and him second. Desperate to avoid an arranged marriage like his mother wants, Ray asks his fairy friend, Lara, for help.

Isabella, who goes by Izzy, lives with their step mother and step sisters. Their family can't be more different than them. While Izzy doesn't care about appearances or what makes someone a "proper lady," that's all their step mother cares about. When the king announces a ball, Izzy's family sees this as their chance to step up from the family of a dead baron. Izzy's step sisters are obsessed with preparing for the ball, and their step mother is trying to convince them to care, too, but Izzy is determined. They will never be a princess.
