Prologue
I'm walking to a black car preheating on a cold winter evening. The bite of the frigid air reminding me of how much I hate winter and urging me to pick up my pace to get out of the cold. I get in the car, pausing to let the warmth chase away the chill. I put the car in drive and head down the driveway onto the road; but after a couple of miles, as I'm rounding a sharp curve, I realize that my brakes aren't working. I panic as I hear the squeal from the tires as the car skids across the pavement. Just before the car crashes into the guardrail, I'm distracted by a disembodied voice whispering a name in my ear.
Aislynn.
