"Please Mummy, let us in!" they screamed outside the house. Meanwhile, inside, a terrified woman desperately tried to call the police, unable to comprehend why those men were wearing the faces of her dead children as masks. The line was cut. The woman fumbled with her mobile, dropping it when the glass of her window was smashed in. She screamed as the faces of her children rushed towards her.
The next morning, police converged upon the house of Ms. Ritellic, a retired widower whose husband had died serving in the military four years ago. The absence of Ritellic was called in by her neighbour, the young Mr. Hammond, who stopped by for a quick chat early that morning, like usual. When she didn't answer the door, he noticed the ruined window and called the police. Now, he was inside, confirming that the body was indeed hers.
"Sir, I will ask you again, are you absolutely certain this is Ms. Ritellic?" Detective Smith asked again.
"Yes I am, Ma'am." Mr. Hammond replied.
"Good. It's just that it's rather difficult to tell, since there's n-" The detective was cut off by the sound of the door slamming open, echoing through the almost silent house. In walked a team of five people, the head of which left the others at the door and strode over to Detective Smith, their heels ringing sharply on the hardwood floor.
"Aelfrun." A hand was held out towards the Detective. "Purple Diamond Paranormal Crime Unit." The hand was still waiting to be shaken.
"What are you freaks doing here? We don't need, nor want, your help, bastard." Detective Smith sneered, her face contorting as she stared down the masked figure in front of her.
"Sure..." Aelfrun looked around the room again, before turning back to the detective.
Mr. Hammond stared closely at Aelfrun's attire. Starting at their head, the purple hair was just long enough to curl around the edge of their face, framing the mask resting there. This mask completely obscured their face, leaving only two shining red eyes to stare menacingly at the gathered crowd. The porcelain face smiled demurely, the large diamond on the forehead almost seemed to glow. Mr. Hammond shuddered silently, recalling the stories he had heard. His eyes continued on down the body, black fabrics blending together, interspersed with the silver glint of jewellery. Almost every inch of the body was covered. A high necked, long sleeved shirt was layered under a tailored waistcoat, the silver chain of a pocket watch dangling gently. A jacket was thrown haphazardly over the shoulders, almost as if they were in a rush to leave. The trousers were finely pressed, yet tucked into the top of knee high leather combat boots. Through the belt loops was threaded a worn, yet polished, leather belt, the silver ringed holes circling their waist. A chain hung on the left side of their body, small pouches and vials strung to the loops. The boots looked like they had just come off of the shelf, buckles shining and leather polished to a gleam. The extra few inches of height meant that Aelfrun seemed to tower over Detective Smith as they slowly moved closer to her face.
The two people were currently arguing. Eventually, Aelfrun sighed and handed over a piece of paper, declaring this case one of Paranormal origin. After a few more minutes of arguing, the Detective relented and removed her men, and Mr. Hammond, from the scene"Finally! We can work in peace!" A short, scruffy looking creature exclaimed, heading over to the body. "Now, what do we have here?" It scanned its eyes over once, before latching on to the victim's face. Or lack thereof. "By the King!" The loud exclamation shocked the other members of its team. "We've got some Faceshifters running about!"
"What?" A lilting voice sounded from across the room, as a woman in a long flowered dress made her way over.
"Yeah. Isn't this the work of some of your people, Kiandra?"
The lady, Kiandra, crouched down near the body, her fingers lightly brushing over the missing face. "Yes, I'm afraid it is, Aiken. Aelfrun, Anam, what do we do now? These people are dangerous." Her face turned up to her team leader, who tilted their head, as if thinking.
"Malin, find out what you can about Ms. Valerie Ritellic. Randall, see if you can pick up on a scent. And take it outside, I'm going to scan the room." At Aelfrun's orders, the four Paranaturals rose to their feet and left the house, closing the door securely behind them. Aelfrun removed their mask.
Outside, Malin and Randall got to work. "Are you freaks done? Can we go back inside and investigate properly?" Detective Smith demanded the moment the door was shut. She started to move towards it, but Kiandra was in the way, unhinging her jaw and showing her long, sharp canines.
"I wouldn't go inside, if I were you." Aiken spoke from behind the woman. "Gonna intrude on a Halfborn’s work?” From inside the house, they could hear the melodic chanting of Aelfrun's voice, rising and falling slowly.
Understandably, the commotion caused by Detective Smith had drawn a crowd. An unassuming suburban neighbourhood suddenly graced with the presence of multiple police units? People were going to take an interest. The houses here were all the same, redbrick detached and semi detached houses, inhabited mostly by human occupants. Tidy front gardens, well pruned hedges, and weed free driveways were the precedent here. Ms. Ritellic’s house wasn’t any different. The front door, now ruined by the police when the wellness officers couldn’t get through the window, was a light blue colour, matching with the curtains of the broken window, which blew gently in the breeze of the peaceful summer’s day. “Ummm… excuse me?” one brave person called out from the crowd “What’s going on?” Kiandra returned her jaw to a more ‘normal’ position, and turned to face the crowd.
“This is currently an ongoing police investigation, please step back from the area and continue on with your day. If anyone happened to have heard anything suspicious last night, please see Malin to report it.” Malin raised their hand, not looking up from their tablet as they opened up a new document.
“What was it then? Some sort of break in?” another voice called.
“A break in? Are you stupid? Of course it wasn’t just a break in! Those freaks only turn up when something weird has happened-” a third voice piped up, the owner gesturing towards the Diamonds standing on the lawn.
“And what do you have against them exactly? They ever done anything to you?” the second voice retorted before any of the diamonds could get a word in edgeways. Kiandra sighed, recognising that this wasn’t going to end anytime soon.
After around twenty minutes, after the two people had finished arguing, and a majority of the crowd had dispersed, the house's door opened and Aelfrun walked out, adjusting the mask on their face. They spoke to Detective Smith briefly, allowing her men to return inside, before signalling to their team, who loaded into the car they had arrived in, and drove off.
After vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural and mythical creature were found to exist on Earth, humans decided to, for the most part, coexist alongside them peacefully.
