it was silent. it was always quiet but today something was different. Grace stood slowly and left her dorm, the click of her door echoing down the hall. she pulled her jumper tighter around herself as she made her way down stairs. she looked at the watch quickly, five am, before heading out into the world, sucking in her breath as the harsh, cold air nipped at her face. finally, the noise started to come. cars, birds, the wind; all rushing around her. Grace wriggled her fingers and gripped onto her backpack straps, kicking at the leaves on her way. she could see her university now, the old grey building standing out from the newer, sleeker ones surrounding it. its ivy covered walls and creaking weather vain always seemed out of place in the modern city but the headmaster refused to get it re-built. she was headed for the library but just before she reached the building, something caught her eye. a boy, in a dark green cloak, sat on a wall round the side of the building. he lent against it, tossing an apple up and down and up and- Grace's eyes followed it and it was then, she noticed, the boy wasn't touching the apple.
impossible, Grace thought, but as she continued to watch, the boy threw it higher. a sly smirk grew on his face and he let the apple drop. she expected it to burst and splat on the ground but it stayed whole, not even a bruise. she began to walk closer but the boy stood up, checked his cloak then ran.
and of course, she ran after him.
