I look outside my window as I watch drops of rain pour down from the sky. The flowers in our garden sway with the wind.
It’s rainy season again. This weather reminds me of that time my ex-boyfriend cheated on me.
Kean, my boyfriend back then, was very sweet. We were together for almost two years. We met when I was still in first year of high school. He’s a year older than I am. We became friends first then lovers when he confessed his feelings for me.
Since we started first as friends, he knew everything I liked. He knew I don’t like receiving roses because I think it’s just wasteful. He would give me a book instead because he knew I love reading. We would commute home together. We had occasional fights but I knew no relationship is perfect. Having a boyfriend who knows you so well was almost too good to be true.
I should have known that it was.
It was one Saturday afternoon when Sandra, my older sister, asked me to go to the grocery store to buy some ingredients for the dinner she was going to cook. It was raining hard that day so I didn’t see the face of every person that I passed by. As I was going home from the store, I saw an umbrella similar to what I gave him. I noticed the shirt the person was wearing has the design I made for Kean. It was a personal design he asked me to make for a shirt because I like doing graphic art as a hobby. That confirmed that he’s Kean.
I followed him because I wanted to say hi to him and ask what he was up to. I was about to go to him when a girl I’ve never seen before came out of nowhere and gave him a hug. At first, I thought she was just a very close friend but then she kissed him on the lips. What was even more painful was he kissed her back. They were smiling at each other, unaware that I, his current girlfriend, was there.
I turned my back and went straight home. I called Mina and Kelly, my two best friends, to come over our house and they came as soon as they could. I couldn’t stop my tears from falling as I was telling them everything I saw.
That happened a year ago. I am over that now... I think. I think I don’t have feelings for Kean anymore.
I hear someone knocking on my door.
“Sophia, get ready”, Sandra says behind the door. “I’ll drive you to the university. You have an hour to prepare. I don’t want you late on your first day.”
I open my door and see her in her bathrobe.“What? It’s only seven o’clock. My class won’t start until ten o’clock. The university is only thirty minutes away by car.”
“I have to go to work early so I’m driving you to university early.”
“Okay. I’ll just brush my teeth, take a quick shower and get dressed”, I answer. “Maybe I’ll just go to the library until 9:30.”
We are on our way to the university and the rain is getting worse. There is a heavy traffic and the cars are moving very slowly. It didn’t help that someone had an accident because the road is slippery. I wonder if the university won’t cancel classes because the rain is getting worse.
As I was wondering that, I see a cute guy inside the car to our left. He seems to be the same age as I am. He’s wearing a formal black coat with a purple collared shirt underneath. He looks like he is from a very wealthy family. His face looks familiar. I think I’ve seen his face before. Have I seen him in a magazine somewhere?
Oh! He noticed me looking at him. For a moment, I think I saw him looked surprised. Now he’s smiling at me.
The traffic lightens and cars begin to move. Our car goes ahead and parts from that of the rich-looking boy. I really wondered where I’ve seen him before. Maybe I’ll remember later.
