Room 29b

Author's Introduction

Author's Introduction

Aug 07, 2025

Who am I?

Hi everyone! My name is Tasha Land. I am 23 years old when writing this and studying for a masters degree in editing for film and TV. In my spare time, I work on my passion project, the series you're about to read.

What is 'Room 29b'?

Back in June of 2020, 17 year old me was sick of being in lockdown and further sick of not seeing people that looked like me in coming of age films and TV shows. There was and still is a severe lack of disability representation in media, so I decided to take it upon myslef to help change this.

Throughout the summer of 2020, I drafted my first outline of the story. My vision was a slice of life story about a group of friends, most of which had disabilities, who's safe place in school was this room that was classed as the special educational needs departmenr but is really just a spare classroom. Together they supported each other through the ups and downs of adolescenece. Looking back at my first drafts, I was a genuinely terrible writer and it's no wonder I thought the project was a lost cause.

Fast forward to 2021 and I start my university course in Film Production. Over the next 3 years, I actually studied and practiced how to tell a compelling story. Though I thought I'd given up on the idea of  'Room 29b' I could never fully forget about it. The memory of writing it in 2020 kept bugging me relentlessly and wouldn't leave me alone. So in 2024 when I was due to graduate, I decided to re- open the project and worked consistently on it. I was critical of myself and where I went wrong with the 2020 drafts. I wanted to make it the best version of itself. Now in 2025, here we are and I'm ready to share the series with the world.

What is 'Room 29b' about?

'Room 29b' follows a group of characters many of which have disabilities as they navigate through different stages in their life.

Elliot (the main character of this volume)

The series follows Elliot, a pessimistic, high achieving 14 year old entering year 10 of secondary school. Having had some time off school last year due to mental health reasons, Elliot returns with his guards up and determined not to trust anyone he comes into contact with. This is until he meets Jack, an optimistic, quirky year 10 who's new to the school. When Elliot is tasked with tutoring the struggling student, the two start to form a connection. Where will it lead?

As for the rest of the characters, there will be character profiles coming soon!

What is the upload schedule?

It will probably be twice a week to begin with. I'm studying for a masters degree so I've got a good excuse okay lol! In all seriousness, I will try and keep the schedule as consistent as possible and update you all if anything changes.

Does the series have an ending?

Yes- kind of! So Volume 1 yes absolutely! Volumes 1 has 10 chapters, the names of which will be announced soon! Volume 2 is mostly outlined but without a concrete ending yet. For the series as a whole, I have a vague idea of how it will end but I'm not 100% sure yet.

Content Warnings

This series will cover difficult topics including ableism, homophobia, bullying, abuse, mental health and suicide. You as a reader have my assurance that I have researched these topics to ensure they are written accurately, with sensitivity and maturity. These subjects matters are not in here to make the story more dramatic or to give it more angst or shock value but because they are important things to be talked about in a healthy way.

If you as a reader feel that I have misrepresented something or been inaccurate, please do not hesitate to inform me so I can work to correct it. With regards to the topic of suicide, I have dedicated a lot of my time to researching the healthy ways to write this topic. Having viewed media in which it was handled well, I am aware of the negative impact it can cause.

I have taken my information from two main sources:

Samaritans:

https://www.samaritans.org/about-samaritans/media-guidelines/guidance-depictions-suicide-and-self-harm-literature/

Action Alliance

https://theactionalliance.org/messaging/entertainment-messaging/national-recommendations

While these topics are in this series, they are not what define the series. My story has many moments of joy and levity throughout. I am not one for spoiling stories but I will say this, there is light at the end of the tunnel in this case.

Thanks for reading this introduction about me and how this story came together. I truly hope you enjoy reading it.
