Beneath Fractured Skies

Beneath Fractured Skies

Dec 16, 2025

The year is 1419 V. R , nearly two millennia since the archived idea of the departure of the gods. Volant’s rise to power and reign over the heavens lead to the departure of angels that once  silhouetted the skies and subsequently the deities of their creation. The once golden skies and pearlescent clouds now hued to a gentle  blue and fluffy clouds, the golden sun and spectrum light only illuminated through cracks to the heavens. The land under this light spreads across six continents; Lanestria, Mourmune, Castello, Heradine, Kihlo, and Sariza. These continents made up the world of Rosalia; coined after the shapes of the continents forming that of a rose.

Rosalia is a world of magic said to have been a gift from the gods before their departure. From the earth to the water, Æther, the essence of magic was the matter of all things. The more Æther something had, the more magical it could be. People who could weave and manipulate Æther are considered magus. These people are naturally attuned to Æther. Like all beings, they naturally have Æther within them which counts as their precipice to be able to do magic. With that being said, magus are a rarity as it takes years of training to utilize magic significantly. As such, most people can not do magic even with the unique abundance of Æther in their body. An abundance of Æther often presented itself in various physical ways like an unnatural ageless beauty, incredible strength, inability to get sick, unnatural strong eyesight or hearing etc. Most people with an abundance of Æther tend to only have one or two traits of such but are more common than magus. In a world filled with so much magical potential, even the everyday animal can present signs of Æther abundance; pigs that can fly, bees the size of dogs, animals fused together by Æther, and creatures born of Æther portrayed as monsters. Nature itself can be bestowed an abundance of Æther. Æther Crystals or Manarite, crystallized Æther,  can be as large as mountains and mines for the creation of magical items. Heavily coveted, a vein of manarite can be a boon for any civilization and the use of magical items gave use to those who otherwise could not do magic.

Our story begins on the continent of Heradine in the country of Italirisa. While a country built on their religion to Volant, The Immaculate Light, the country’s government is that of a monarchy. The ruling House of Ophelia consists of three branch houses and fourteen vassal families; 9 being subjects to the three branches. The branch houses are House Ainscourt, House Isolde, and House Bellamy. Each branch house governed over one grand duke, one marquess,  and one count. Each head of a branch house are ArchDukes themselves, respectfully. The remaining five vassal families and their title under direct order of the King of Italirisa are the viscount family of  Elanor, barony family of Geniveve, earl family of Ignus, count family of Bastion, and duchy family of Veil.

The king of House Ophelia, Eulysses Rosalai Ophelia, is said to be a benevolent ruler with a radiance of Volant’s champion. Under his guiding hand, the Empire of Ophelia made its mark on history becoming a governing force of Heradine just under three years of King Eulysses’s crusade. Heradine is a country of vast pastures, deep forests, and small mountains. It’s known for its royal crusaders that carved out the country in the name of Volant the Majestic. It borders between the country of Lanestria and the Noir Blue, the formidable sea infamous for the dark Æther within its black waves. While heavily militaristic, the kingdom prides itself on chivalry in the image of Volant, The Majestic, who was known to be a chivalrous knight before ascending to divinity.  This peaceful disposition encouraged the staunch and rigorous role of etiquette and manners among its civilians, primarily in cities. This coined heavy judgement of those of less standing like farmers and other peasants. The Rose Crowned Lion; the heraldic symbol of the Kingdom of Italirisa, is held with pride throughout the country and represents the royal crusaders that serve the benevolent king.

Near the borders of Lanestria, the territories of Viscount Elanor and Earl Ignus reside. Viscount Elanor has two towns near the border; Apollo and Hamish. Earl Ignus with three; Tomo, Galileo, and Heather. While not directly at war, Lanestria and Heradine have a strenuous relationship with the bordering towns encountering a brunt of the tension. Political violence, prejudice, and subjugation is a common occurrence with neither side being the winner for long. Unfortunately, this left these towns in many crossfires between the two governing agents. With that being said, out-right war and battles have never occurred.

The town of Heather did its best under the tensions that often plagued their small town. It resided between rolling pastures and willow forests. Outside of political tensions, the town is rather quiet. It farms primarily poffin sheep and wheat.

Across a field under the calming sky and gentle breeze, opalescent eyes opened when light from the heavens brushed against alabaster skin. Delicate dark eyelashes batted against gentle rosy cheeks and a curious gaze took in the soft grass beneath petite hands and bare feet.

The pasture was peaceful, the scent of wheat in the air. The green grass of the paddock was grazed on by sheep with fluffy coats that floated and bobbled through the sky when excited; a common defensive trait of poffin sheep.

“Baah!” One bleated as it floated precariously over the field.

“Oscar, get down!” A young man sighed, glowering at the rebellious sheep that floated off down the paddock. The man was a light tan from being out in the light of the skies. His wild auburn hair was hardly containable with the twine of his ponytail. He had bright blue eyes and a freckled face dusted with pink to his nose and cheeks. A lithe but strong body, he held one baby sheeple under his arm while he  wrangled the rest of the rowdy herd. He hobbled his way through, trying to catch up to the one straying away.

“On to the barn guys, come on!” He put the sheeple down for it to join its mother, waving them off to the other side of the paddock with a sharp whistle.

“Oscar, come.” He called, following after the defiant sheep.

Over the hilltop that’s where he caught sight of her. A young woman in a simple white dress, long flowing black curls framing around her body and lying at the bottom of the pasture. Her opalescent eyes met his light blue.

On top of her head sat a brilliant gold crown.
