"Man, I can't believe we are becoming seniors soon... One week from now and we are gonna have summer vacation!" I look over to my best friend, Candace Levine. We were sitting in a very comfy bus. There was enough room to stretch your legs and take a nap if you wanted. It had enough room for the tallest of people, our other two friends/the only two guys of the group, Edith Nelson and JC Lear. We met during the first week of high school. Our school always hosted a week for the 9th graders, this way the older students could help them out and enjoy their first week. We had to make groups of six and along with our other friends, Leah Yin and Alyssa Patino, we were inseparable.
"Speaking of which, what should we do during the summer?" Candace asks as she ties her brown hair in a high ponytail.
"I call going on a road trip!" Leah says flashing her driver's license as she pops up from the seat in front of us. Alyssa who was sitting with her, sits up and looks over to us.
"Oh my gosh, you finally got it!" Alyssa takes a look at her license, mainly for its authenticity.
"Yep, so we can finally go driving." Edith gasps. He and JC sat on the bus seat parallel to us.
"We can go into a drive-thru, and buy food!" JC laughs.
"Calm down man, I'm sure we can do plenty of that." JC stands up and almost hits his head at the top of the bus. He's 6'5 with Edith being behind him with his height at 6'0. JC makes Leah look like a dwarf. Then again, everyone is taller than Leah, at a clean 5 feet. She was feisty though, so height would be the last thing you'd ever think.
"I'm so glad we are at the On Route. I'm pretty sure 90% of the bus is gone, including Gwen." I say.
"Fuck her, I'm glad she's not in our cabin group," Leah says.
We were on a school field trip, a full week at Camp Chungus. We each got to make our own cabin groups. Gwen and her crew were just bad news. They were just plain mean, cursing everyone out, disrespecting teachers and not following the rules-yet were never caught. Leah thinks that it's cuz Gwen's parents pay the school money.
"We're back motherfuckers!" Speaking of the devil and her crew...
Candace, who was sitting beside me stands to open the window beside me. I always picked the window seat, I could see the view and isolate myself. She rolls up the sleeves to her jean jacket and fans herself with her black t-shirt which she wore underneath.
"Ugh, it's so hot... Are you guys warm?" I shake my head.
"Maybe because you are wearing jeans, they're black too so your absorbing heat." She shrugs.
"Come to think of it, you are the most dressed out of all of us," Alyssa says looking at her outfit. She wore a light pink baggy t-shirt and white skort. Leah wore black overalls and a yellow baggy t-shirt. JC had a black tank top and black shorts and Edith wore a white t-shirt and dark blue jeans.
"Oh well, at least I got water." She takes out her water bottle from her bag and chugs it down. They watch Gwen and her crew sit near them where their bags were.
"Hey, Edith! Why're you still hanging with those freaks? Why don't you come up front, we've got more good looking fellas for you to talk to?" Edith rolls his eyes at Gwen's comment. He looks over to me as I sit up to look at the front.
"Thanks but no thanks!" He shouts back. JC squishes in between Edith and sits down.
"Kyrie, you still chasing those dreams of becoming a dancer? Keep dreaming, because our act will be the best one yet." I stand up to retaliate, as I look over to my friends they shake their head-except Leah, who's ready to launch on over the seat and beat Gwen with a stick.
"Leah, calm." Alyssa pulls her arm down.
"We'll see about that!" JC shouts. Edith pushes up his glasses while shaking his head.
"Forget her Kyrie, she obviously hasn't seen talent." He says to me.
"Thanks."
Students start piling into the bus as we chat about our summer plans. JC apparently might be going on a vacay back to California, which made Candace a bit sad-JC was basically her second bff when I wasn't around. We had some plans to go to conventions and such. Alyssa had been working her butt off to help pay for the costs-mainly because she was the only one with a job at a bakery. We also thought of doing a karaoke stunt, singing by the beach with a machine.
As the hours pass we sing to some old nostalgic songs and eat some fruit that Alyssa had in her bag. We talked about who will sleep where being that the bunks probably won't fit JC and he'll have to sleep outside. Candace then introduced everyone to her vlog that she was making. Apparently, she was filming when people didn't notice, till now. I hope she didn't film me sleeping.

"We're here!" I hear very mumbled. I am suddenly awakened by a very excited Candace. She is shaking me back and forth by the shoulders. As I rub my eyes we see one of the camp instructors hop onto the bus, clipboard in hand and colorful red tee.
"Alrighty, everyone grab your things and follow us! We'll give you more instructions after." We do as we are told and head outside. Immediately we could smell the fresh air and the forest surrounding our camp. It was quite humid and the sun was shining brightly. We stand on the pavement and look at the building in front of it, I couldn't tell what it was exactly, but it was big.
"Okay, so each cabin group get together!" We huddle up and see about 10 people in colourful shirts. "So, welcome everyone to Camp Chungus!"
They each introduce themselves and conclude the day's plan.
1. Camp orientation
2. Cabin setup
3. Dinner
4. Skit/talent show
5. Free time/sleep time
They first do the camp orientation. The big building was the eatery, inside there were tons of wooden benches where each cabin group could sit and chill out. Near that building was a small open field. The pavement area had a basketball net where people could play. As you descend more into the forest area there was the beach area, then a path to where they kept the kayaks and canoes. There were two bathrooms where they had stalls just like how we had at our high school. It smelled kind of earthy inside. They showed us the teacher cabins and other areas where activities would be held.
As the orientation ends our teachers tell us which cabins are ours. We get one near the opposite side of the lake. It kind of scared me as I couldn't swim and it looked like there was no safety there.
We see a patio and two doors. That's when we realize we have to share. There was a wall that divided the two cabins. But there was a room at the end that allowed you to enter from the back door and let you go to either cabin. There were some drawers if we wanted to use them, but we didn't wanna risk forgetting anything.
"If you have dirt on your shoes leave them outside," Alyssa says opening the door. We're amazed going inside, it felt so different than being in our homes. Leah runs to one of the bunks and jumps on it.
"Ugh! This is like a hard rock... We're supposed to sleep on this?" Alyssa goes to sit on the bunks.
"Yeah... this is like a foam bed with a casing. At least we brought something to put on top." Everyone drops their bags.
"So who's sleeping where?" JC shuts the door.
"Candace, Kyrie. JC, Edith. Me and Leah. To who gets what bunk, you guys decide." I look over to Candace who tossed her jean jacket on one of the top bunks.
"So you're getting top bunk?"
"Yeah, figured since you're afraid of heights. Plus the bar is not very tall, so you might fall." I laugh.
"You know me so well."
"I think you should get the bottom bunk," Edith says to JC. "Just cause, you might break the top bunk. And you can dangle your legs on the edge."
"Couldn't have said it any better." JC runs his hand through his dirty blonde hair and plops on the cold bunk. "Whew, this is so relieving." Edith climbs to the top bunk and dangles his legs over the edge.
"I just realized something," Edith says. We look towards him. "How are we going to shower? There's no shower..."
"Pretty sure we clean ourselves in the lake," Leah says climbing to the top bunk.
"I wonder how Gwen is gonna last out here," Alyssa says laughing. We hear a door open, but it wasn't ours or the back door.
"Oh my god, we have to sleep in this?" I start snickering, along with the others. "Vic, what is that back room?" We start running around trying to find a place to hide. Edith runs outside, not shutting the door completely. JC crawls underneath his bunk as Candace takes his and Edith's bag to hide his body. Leah opens the window to the patio and jumps outside. Alyssa hides behind the dresser as we pretend to be a pile of backpacks, suitcases and sleeping bags.
JC watches as Gwen and her crew enter our side of the cabin.
"Oh my goodness, it's Kyrie and her trash, we have to be with them?" She sighs. "At least we can make them suffer. Let's go, girls, I don't want anyone being tampered with." As they leave our side of the cabin they drop a broom from the backroom.
At least we can clean our cabin.
Edith and Leah enter the cabin as we all struggle to help JC get out of that cramped spot.
"3, 2, 1, pull!" We launch him out of the bottom of the cabin and laugh. We had to get ready to go and have dinner.
"Let's set up our things and head out." I take my suitcase and set up my bed. I put my pillow down and sit on my bed looking around and watching Candace jump down from the top bunk. I was at bliss.
Edith sits beside me, he looks me in the eyes before watching JC aggressively broom the floor.
"What do you think we should do for our performance?" He asks as I think. I do want to prove Gwen wrong, but this was so easy to be humiliated. "I really think you should dance, you're awesome."
"Thanks, Edith, but I don't know if I want to risk it all. It might be better for us to just create some dumb skit." He shrugs.
"Well, whatever you choose, I will support you." The fact he was understanding was one of the reasons why we were really close friends.
Only friends.
Truth is, I like him. He's genuinely sweet and smart. But, I have no idea if the feeling is mutual. I don't want to risk our friendship.
He stands to talk with JC and Candace looks at me.
"Do you ever plan to... you know?"
"I'm not totally sure yet. I should be asking you, what about you and..." I gesture my head to JC. She liked him too. But just in case Alyssa or Leah had their eyes on them, we kept things open.
"Leah? Are you sleeping?" Alyssa asks. Leah rolls backwards so her head is over the bunk, she could fall at any minute. I was scared.
"Nope! I'm playing Sims 2 for PSP! People be playing on their new consoles and I'm going retro." She sighs. "Now I'm getting lightheaded." She sits up and puts her PSP underneath her pillow. "I'm so hyped for all the activities, who is going canoeing with me?"
"I will only if I'm not in the center of the boat," I say. It was kind of gross being in the middle of the canoe, there was water in it and your butt would be wet when your top was steaming in the hot sun.
"Alyssa, Candace, the CAL team. Edith, JC and Kyrie, team 2." Edith grabs a can of bug spray and shakes it.
"We should put this on, I know one of us will get bit like no tomorrow." He aims it like a gun.
"Dude, don't spray that in here," Candace says escorting him outside. JC laughs following them.
"Let's go to dinner."
-
After a ton of spraying, which involved Leah spraying bug spray in Edith's mouth as he didn't keep it closed... We finally had arrived at the eatery, sitting down. Two people had to go and grab the food to bring to our table. Candace and JC decided to go and grab the food. Leah is practically drooling by the smell.
Candace sets the table while JC plops the bowl of penne pasta and soda. Immediately we dig in and chow down. None of us speak till we are stuffed.
"So... about that karaoke stunt..." I say. "What about we do it to 'All Night Long.'? It's a catchy song, we can do it 8-6AM. We'll run two cameras and depending what month we do it we can get Edith or Candace too drive as well. We will continuously roll the cameras."
"I like it!" Leah says chugging her soda before burping loudly. "Excuse me."
"How are we supposed to pee?" JC asks. I look over to Edith.
"You take Edith with you." Candace coughs.
"What are we going to do about our skit?" She asks.
"I could rap," JC suggests. "Edith, you be my beat. Leah, stunts. Candace and Alyssa can be my backup, Kyrie as the main dancer." As I hear that, I can hear Gwen's comment in the back of my mind.
"I still dunno..."
"Or we could go with-" Leah puts her hand over Alyssa's mouth.
"No, nope. We are not going with your idea. Last time we did, we mistook Kyrie for Gwen. Like, HOW?" She was bringing up Leah's weird plans. She was a natural daredevil, constantly wanted to do stunts and gets hurt the most often out of the whole team.
She once was on a kids playground and climbed to the top of the slide. No, not the actual slide but the sunroof over the slide. She then attempted to jump from there to the second playground set which looked like a metal pretzel.
Instead, she landed on her leg.
She ended up in crutches for a couple of weeks. At least it wasn't as bad as her brilliant idea to get Chinese fireworks and attach them to her skateboard...
